2014 Calendar of Classes front cover: Scott Bynum, DVM,, Applications Specialist with Butch, a Boxer-Mastiff mix Dr. Scott Bynum graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After spending 17 years practicing general small animal medicine with an emphasis on emergency medicine, he joined the Academy of Veterinary Imaging. He performs many functions for the academy from animal management to performing onsite installations and instructional training of many different ultrasound systems throughout the country. However, the job he enjoys the most is teaching in the scanning labs where he can interact with many aspiring as well as experienced veterinary sonographers. left: Schmidt, a black Schnauzer January 30 / 31 Introduction to Ultrasound: The Basics February 1 / 2 Soft Tissue Intermediate Diagnostics 5 7 Echocardiography Diagnostics and Clinical Utility 8 10 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 1 10/11 Echocardiographic Case Study Companion #2 11/12 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 2 24 March 1 DVM and Tech, Week 4 (24-26 St, 26-28 Echo) March 1 DVM and Tech Week 4 (Testing) 6 / 7 Soft Tissue: Advanced Soft Tissue 8 Soft Tissue Clinical Case Workshop 9 cardiac Clinical Case Workshop 31 April 1 Introduction to Ultrasound: the Basics April 1 Introduction to Ultrasound: the Basics 2 / 3 Soft Tissue Intermediate Diagnostics 7 12 DVM and Tech, Week 1 23 Fast: Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma 24 Scan Only Soft Tissue 25 Scan Only Cardiac 30 May 2 Echocardiography Diagnostics and Clinical Utility May 1 / 2 Echocardiography Diagnostics and Clinical Utility 3 echocardiographic Case Study Companion #1 4 cardiac Clinical Case Workshop 5 7 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 1 8 echocardiographic Case Study Companion: Part 2 June 16 / 17 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Congenital Heart Disease: Part 3 17 / 18 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 2 19 / 20 Applied Echocardiography: Treatment and Management of Heart Disease in the Dog and Cat 28 / 29 Introductory Ultrasound: The Basics July 8 / 9 Clinical Approach To Small Animal Pathology: Part 1 10 / 11 Soft Tissue Intermediate Diagnostics 12 Musculoskeletal/Cervical Ultrasound 13 Soft Tissue Clinical Case Workshop 21 26 DVM and Tech, Week 2 August 4 / 5 Electrocardiography 6 8 Echocardiography Diagnostics and Clinical Utility 9 echocardiographic Case Study Companion #1 10 Cardiac Clinical Case Workshop 18 19 Introductory Ultrasound: The Basics 20 Fast: Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma 21 22 Clinical Approach to Small Animal Pathology: Part 2 September 10 Feline Only Instruction Soft Tissue 11 Feline Only Instruction Echo 12 Echocardiographic Case Study Companion #3A 13 / 14 Radiology 15 20 Residents and Specialists Only: Small Animal Ultrasound Camp 29 / 30 Introductory Ultrasound: The Basics October 1 / 2 Soft Tissue Intermediate Diagnostics 3 / 4 Soft Tissue: Advanced Soft Tissue 5 Soft Tissue Clinical Case Workshop 13 15 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 1 15/16 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Congenital Heart Disease: Part 3 17 Echocardiographic Case Study Companion #4 18 19 Advanced Echocardiography and Doppler in Acquired Heart Disease: Part 2 20 Echocardiographic Case Study Companion #3A 21 Echocardiographic Case Study Companion #3B 22/23 Applied Echocardiography: Treatment and Management of Heart Disease in the Dog and Cat 27-31 DVM and Tech, Week 3 (27-29 St, 29-31 Echo) November 1 is testing for the course. I attended Tarleton State University and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Production. Following graduation, I worked for a wholesale grocery company as the manager of the IS Department. I decided to go back to college in 1996. This is where I was introduced to ultrasound and immediately fell in love with it. As fate would have it, I entered ultrasound school in 1997 and graduated in 1999. I worked as a registered Cardiac Sonographer for over a year, when I was approached by Sound-Eklin to be an Applications Specialist. I have been with Sound-Eklin for over thirteen years now, I am the Director of Education. My job is an adventure that encompasses my three biggest passions: animals, ultrasound and travel. I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of the Sound-Eklin team and to have the opportunity to build a very successful animal adoption program, and have saved hundreds of four-legged friends during the past seven years and look forward to another strong year. Meet Academy Instructors June Boon, BA, MS, June was introduced to veterinary ultrasound in 1979 when she was looking for work at Colorado State University. She was given the opportunity to help a radiology resident develop scanning techniques in animals using a Bscan that had been donated to CSU by a human hospital. After about 6 months an m-mode machine was donated to CSU and she was asked to try obtaining m-mode images in animals. At the time there were only a handful of veterinary references in the literature, all very general or all m-mode only regarding the potential of diagnostic ultrasound. Eventually given the choice of developing either the abdominal or the cardiac ultrasound program, the choice was easy, the dynamic field of echocardiography won! Since 1980, she has continued to be challenged with new modalities and diagnostic information about two-dimensional imaging, spectral Doppler, color flow Doppler, tissue Doppler, etc. She developed normal reference ranges for the dog, the cat and llamas. She has helped hundreds of veterinarians learn the skill of echocardiography and its interpretation. Her Manual of Veterinary Echocardiography remains the only book dedicated completely to echocardiography and is an acclaimed resource used by both generalists and specialists. Echocardiography remains a passion of hers and she loves to teach others to learn and enjoy this diagnostic modality.
