5 Veterinary Technician School News Chattanooga State Community College February 2015 Greetings from the Chattanooga State Veterinary Technology Program! This spring has been a busy semester and it is hard to believe we are almost at mid-terms! We are pleased to bring you the following news: We have once again had the fine privilege of teaming up with our local veterinary emergency hospital, RIVER (Regional Institute of Veterinary Referrals and Emergencies) and hosted the annual RiverCity Veterinary Conference on the Chattanooga State main campus! With multiple vendors and amazing speakers, our students moderated and sat in on some enlightening topics and sessions! Students were instrumental in helping with the hands-on demonstrations and got a taste of what community education is all about! Those who participated TRULY enjoyed themselves and we look forward to hosting again next year! After 9 years of amazing service and leadership for the Chattanooga State Veterinary Technology Program, we had to say happy retirement to Dr. Susie Matthews. Thanks to her the state and the nation would not have 70+ veterinary technology graduates to help strengthen this honorable profession! Thank you, Dr. Matthews, for your dedicated service and we wish you the best in your new adventures in life! With that news, searched far and wide to find a new program director that could help steer us into the bright future of veterinary medicine and we were blessed to find Dr. Marcy O Rourke! Dr. O Rourke comes to us after 13yrs of success as the Program Director of Veterinary Technology at Baker College of Muskegon, Michigan! The experience she brings includes six years as a LVT prior to becoming a DVM, starting a new program which has now grown to being offered at six different campuses throughout Michigan, and over a decade of seeing patients as a part-time practicing veterinarian. Welcome to Chattanooga State, Dr. O Rourke! We look forward to many years of quality LVMT s!
6 University of Tennessee at Martin The University of Tennessee at Martin received initial accreditation from AVMA CVTEA in January Since gaining accreditation 33 students have graduated with a Bachelor s in Agriculture with a concentration in veterinary health technology. Graduates are currently employed in private practice, veterinary teaching hospitals, veterinary referral hospitals and laboratories. Veterinary health technology students are exposed to companion animals, pocket pets, and livestock while progressing through the curriculum. The VHT teaching facility is located on an approximately 700 acre teaching farm. The farm houses horses, cows, goats, and pigs. Students are active in many hands on laboratories with livestock. Students also work with dogs and cats including everything from bathing to learning to monitor anesthesia and assist in surgery. UT Martin works with companion animals from local animal shelters. Students are involved in service learning projects including vaccination, grooming, socialization, and work as surgical assistants for spays/neuters of these animals. In addition to working with livestock and companion animals, the students learn about, as well as, handle mice, rats, rabbits, birds and many more species of pocket pets. Laboratory sizes are kept small so all students get the hands on experience needed to become successful veterinary technologists. Success of this program would not be possible without the support of the university, dedicated instructors, local veterinarians, and exceptional students.
7 Lincoln Memorial University VETERINARY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM REPORT February 22, 2015 The Vet Tech club was very active this fall. They collaborated with the Pre-Vet club for two fundraisers and an adoption day at Pet Sense. Christmas Stockings for Pets each organization raised $100 to be donated to Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter and Friends of the Campbell County Animal Shelter to assist in their rescue programs. The Annual Vet Tech Dog Show was a success again this year. We had 44 dogs and around 70 spectators in attendance. They raised $700 which we use year round for the rescue programs the VMT program supports. The LMU VMT program sponsored the Fall CE in October during Homecoming and it was well attended. Some students and faculty attended the Tennessee Veterinary Technician Association CE in Pigeon Forge in October. The VMT program had 13 graduates for the December graduation. The club is planning a pet food drive for our local shelters, a blanket drive for our vet tech dogs, and a field trip to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital and Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington KY. We hope everyone has a safe spring semester and stay warm Submitted by Mary Hatfield, LVMT, NAVTA student chapter and state representative for Tennessee
