Advancing the Nursing Community: A Decade of Success...and More Mission: The New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence convenes and facilitates dialogue and ac on that results in excellence in nursing educa on, prac ce and work environment. Vision: The New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence champions and honors nurses and is a recognized leader and change agent in advancing innova ve nursing educa on, prac- ce, and work environment models. Established in 2003, the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence (NMCNE) has been an influen al force in New Mexico. The NMCNE works to create partnerships and programs that advance the nursing community s capacity to meet New Mexico s current and future health and healthcare needs. The NMCNE focuses on four primary areas: Support nursing educa on/faculty Promote professional development of nurses throughout their careers Enhance the image of nursing/honor nurses Grow the NMCNE The NMCNE is a 501c3 nonprofit organiza on, independent of any healthcare organiza ons, providers, educa onal ins tu ons or government agencies. As such, the NMCNE is considered a neutral party regarding nursing issues. The NMCNE is governed by a Board of Directors represen ng a variety of nursing cons tuents and healthcare industry from around the state. NMCNE ROLE AS CONVENER/FACILATOR WITHIN THE NURSING COMMUNITY As an independent, neutral organiza on, the NMCNE is in a unique posi on to serve as a convener of a variety of stakeholders around nursing issues. In 2008, in partnership with the New Mexico Board of Nursing, the NMCNE worked with New Mexico First to orchestrate six town halls around the state. In the preceding 5 years, there had been numerous state level mee ngs that addressed concerns for a nursing workforce shortage, each mee ng crea ng a set of recommenda ons. Even with over 50 recommenda ons, very li le was actually being accomplished as ownership of the recommenda ons was vague. During the mee ngs, a endees were asked to priori ze the recommenda ons and develop a strategy or structure to be focused on ac ng on the recommenda ons. As a result, a strategic plan was developed and the Nursing Council of New Mexico was created. The Nursing Council of New Mexico was established in 2009 as a volunteer group of nurses and other stakeholders to take the work of the town halls and turn talk into ac on. Within the first year, the Nursing Council of New Mexico: 2

Hosted the first annual nursing faculty conference Researched opportuni es and created a partnership with Idaho State University to bring a rural nurse residency program to New Mexico Created a website for nurses interested in coming to New Mexico with informa on about licensure, employment, and lifestyle in NM. Legisla ve Memorials. Over the past decade, the NMCNE has been a champion of nursing educa on and educa on reform. In partnership with the NM Board of Nursing, the NMCNE hosted and facilitated two legisla ve memorials regarding nursing educa on: HJM 40: The Impact of Nursing Instructors on the Status of Nursing in NM (2009), and HM 50, Statewide Plan for Nursing Educa on (2010). The results of these memorials supported the development of the New Mexico Nursing Educa on Consor um (NMNEC). With all NM public nursing educa on programs as members, the NMNEC has developed a state plan for nursing educa on that increases access to bachelor nursing educa on across the state through a common, integrated associate and bachelor nursing curriculum. Integral to the plan are partnerships between community colleges and universi es that provide community colleges with the op on of offering both an associate and bachelor degree program in the local community. The NMNEC curriculum promotes efficient and shared use of faculty and other educa onal resources. Equally important, the NMNEC has created a forum for all nursing educa on programs to address educa onal issues. New Mexico Ac on Coali on. In October 2010, the Ins tute of Medicine released its report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. This landmark work for nursing outlined eight major recommenda ons in educa on, prac ce and leadership that would impact health through nursing. In response to the IOM report, the Robert Wood Johnson Founda on and the AARP Founda on joined forces to create the na onal Future of Nursing: Campaign for Ac on (CFA). A primary focus of the CFA was to establish state or regional coali ons to advance the IOM recommenda ons. New Mexico, through the NMCNE, applied and was one of the first states accepted as a coali on state in February 2011. The NMCNE serves as the nursing co-lead and administrator for the NM Ac on Coali on (NMAC.) The Nursing Council of New Mexico and Nursing Ac on Coali on met separately and jointly to develop a plan for joining together in addressing the IOM recommenda ons. Through the work of the NMCNE, the Nursing Council of New Mexico, the New Mexico Organiza on of Nurse Leaders, and the New Mexico Nursing Educa on Consor um, many of the recommenda ons were already being addressed. It was decided to support the organiza ons with the lead on specific ini a ves as needed, and iden fy those recommenda ons that needed leadership. NMNEC had its seeds planted at the Center s 2009 Nursing Faculty conference. They were able to secure a 2-year APIN (Academic Progression in Nursing) grant for FY2011-2012 3

through their partnership with the NM Ac on Coali on. Subsequently, they have been awarded a second 2-year grant, in which the strong rela onship with the NMAC. Part of NMAC s support of this grant is by leading a clinical partner/community engagement workgroup focused on educa ng nurse leaders, health care leaders, and communi es about the state plan, and preparing clinical partner staff (CNOs to staff nurses) for the new nursing student of the future. Encourage nurses to engage in lifelong learning through formal and informal educa on. One focus of the workgroup is to encourage and support nurses in furthering their formal educa on with an emphasis on RN to BSN. Another focus is on nurse leadership with an eye to encouraging and preparing nurses to seek various board posi ons. Develop reliable nursing workforce data. The workgroup has two major areas of focus. In collabora on with the New Mexico Board of Nursing and others, the workgroup is assessing the current status of the NM nursing workforce (supply data). Another major project is to a empt to address demand data for nursing workforce through a nurse employer survey. This survey also supports NMAC s work with the APIN grant. STRATEGIC GOAL: SUPPORT NURSING EDUCATION AND FACULTY Nigh ngale Scholarships. In 2004, the NMCNE partnered with the Na onal League of Nursing (NLN) New Mexico chapter to administer the Nigh ngale Scholarships. Six (6) $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to nursing students in prac cal, associate degree, bachelor degree, and graduate degree nursing educa- on programs. The New Mexico Board of Nursing (NMBON) has been a valuable partner over the years in ensuring that the scholarships are fully funded through grants from the NMBON Nursing Excellence Fund. The Nigh ngale Scholarship program has grown to include other partners in awarding addi onal scholarships, such as the New Mexico Associa on of Home and Hospice Care and the New Mexico Cri cal Care Nursing Associa on. Nursing students must have completed one semester or eight hours of nursing courses and be a student in a NM school or working in NM as a nurse. Criteria for selec on for a scholarship include grade point average, recommenda ons by faculty, a student essay, community involvement and financial need. Over the years, 61 students have received Nigh ngale Scholarships. Faculty Conference. In 2009, the NMCNE hosted the first faculty conference to provide professional development for New Mexico s nursing faculty. A second, equally important, goal of the conference is to provide a forum for nursing faculty from around the state to network and learn from each other. Now in its fourth year and drawing over 160 a endees, the faculty conference has transformed to the educators conference, welcoming educa on leaders from clinical partners. The educator conference has partnered with the New Mexico Nursing Educa on Consor um, the NM Board of Nursing and other stakeholders to prepare nurse educators for the NMNEC concept based, common curriculum being rolled out over the next 2-4 years. New Mexico Nursing Educa on Consor um. The NMCNE takes pride in se ng the stage for the crea on of the New Mexico Nursing Educa on Consor um and supports the work of the NMNEC as an associate member and as co-lead for the NM Ac on Coali on. STATEGIC GOAL: PROMOTE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Professional Development. Based on feedback from nurse leaders, the N MCNE focused on two areas for professional development: preceptor and leadership educa on. The NMCNE has provided preceptor development independently and through Idaho State University s Northwest Rural Nurse Residency Program. Preceptor development is highly valued by nurse leaders and con nues as a priority for the NMCNE. The NMCNE also developed two series of leadership classes; the fine-day Founda onal Leadership series has 4

been very successful within healthcare organiza ons by giving a endees the opportunity to reflect and explore their leadership philosophies and goals. The NMCNE is an approved nurse con nued educa on provider through the New Mexico Nurses Associa on. In 2013 alone, the NMCNE provided over 60 contact hours to nearly 900 a endees at educa onal events. Lecture series. In 2012 the NMCNE established the NMCNE Lecture Series to bring na onally renowned experts on current nursing issues to New Mexico nurses. We have been privileged to host: Dr. Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN, Valere Po er Dis nguished Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Workforce Studies, the Ins tute for Medicine and Public Health, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Presenta on: Narra ves of Diversity: Crea ng Inclusive Environments. ENHANCE THE IMAGE OF NURSING AND HONOR NURSING The signature event of the NMCNE is the New Mexico Nursing Excellence Awards. Established in 2005, the NM Nursing Excellence Awards grew out of the NM March of Dimes Nurse of the Year program. The NM Nursing Excellence Awards honors nurses from around the state for excellence in nursing prac ce. Awards include: 21 awards for excellence in prac ce 5 Nursing Legends awards recognizing re red New Mexico nurses for their dedica on to the profession and contribu ons to New Mexico. 5

Touch a Life award nominated by a pa ent or family member, this award honors the impact that nurses have on the pa ents they serve. Friend of Nursing this award acknowledges an individual, who is not a nurse, for their support and advancement of nursing and nurses. Dis nguished Nurse of the Year the top award, this award honors the best of the best. The NM Nursing Excellence Awards enjoys the support of over 25 sponsors from around the state. Over the years, the NMCNE averages 150 nomina ons every year, and over 750 guests a end the gala awards dinner to celebrate the nominees and honorees. Honorees are not announced un l the awards ceremony, adding to the suspense and merriment. Proceeds of the NM Nursing Excellence Awards support the NMCNE opera- ons. Enhance the Image of Nursing. Over the years, the NMCNE has built a reputa on of being a go-to organiza on for nursing. Whether the media or legislators and staff, the NMCNE provides a neutral view of issues and provides informa on and referrals to nursing experts. The NMCNE has been invited to tes fy before state legisla ve commi ees, talked with state and federal elected officials on nursing issues, and wri en editorials on nurse-related issues. Honor Cards. The Honor Card program was established to acknowledge individual nurses throughout the year on a personal level while suppor ng the NMCNE. Through the NMCNE website, individuals can make a dona on to the NMCNE in honor of a colleague, friend, or caregiver. The honored nurse receives a personalized card in the mail that a gi has been made in their honor, including the personal message from the donor. 2014 Nursing Excellence Awards Honorees 6

GROWTH OF THE NMCNE In 2005 the NMCNE began with a part me execu ve director working out of her home! Today, while we s ll have a budgeted positon for a part me execu ve director, we also have a full- me assistant director and have an established office in Albuquerque. In that first year (2005) the ac vi es of the execu ve director were primarily focused on the NM Nursing Excellence Awards. As demonstrated in this report, the NMCNE has grown significantly in its scope and influence. The Board of Directors and staff have embraced this growth and con nually evaluate how best to support the NMCNE s mission with the resources available. Budget. The NMCNE has a fiscal year of January through December. The annual opera onal budget is strictly income versus expense budget and does not take into account restricted funds or cash reserves. The NMCNE Board of Directors have established a balanced budget policy for the opera onal budget. Revenue. Over the period of 2012-2013 the NMCNE has budgeted an average of $316k in revenue, while actualizing $16-40k over budget. Net profit exceeded budgeted projec ons by nearly $14k. As funding sources have become more restricted over the years,the NMCNE has moved to a model that relies more on earned income. Although grants are s ll sought for various projects, the Center is offering more educa onal offerings which contribute greatly to its revenue stream. In 2012 earned income accounted for 30% of total revenue with an increase to 32% the following year. Fundraising. The Board of Directors make a financial commitment to the NMCNE in addi on to their me and talent contribu ons. Every board member is expected to contribute financially to the NMCNE as one of their top philanthropic organiza ons. In 2013 the Board of Directors established the Cul vate the Future Sustainability Fund, kicking off the drive at the 10th anniversary celebra on.
