Agenda OpenStack 101 HP and OpenStack Q&A 2
Poll Which statement best matches your skill level with OpenStack? I have installed and configured OpenStack I have used OpenStack I can spell OpenStack What s OpenStack? 3
What is OpenStack Free open source (Apache license) software governed by a non-profit foundation (corporation) with a mission to produce the ubiquitous Open Source Cloud Computing platform that will meet the needs of public and private clouds regardless of size, by being simple to implement and massively scalable. Massively scalable cloud operating system that controls large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources Community open source with contributions from 1000+ developers and 180+ participating organizations Open web-based API Programmatic Infrastructure as a Service Plug-in architecture; allows different hypervisors, block storage systems, network implementations, hardware agnostic, etc. 4
What is OpenStack Foundation The Foundation An independent body providing shared resources to help achieve the OpenStack Mission by Protecting, Empowering, and Promoting OpenStack software and the community around it, including users, developers and the entire ecosystem. Individual Members elect 1/3 of the seats, Gold Members elect 1/3 of the seats, and Platinum Members appoint 1/3 of the seats Board of Directors Provides legal management of the Foundation and its financial resources, oversees Foundation operations, sets overall budget and goals for Foundation staff, and hires the Executive Director 5 PTL PTL PTL (project technical (project technical (project leads) leads) technical leads) Elected by body of project contributors responsible for the direction of each project Technical Committee Elected members who set technical policies that cross projects and determines incubation of new projects User Committee A formal mechanism to provide input on user priorities, user feedback, and raise important issues Legal Affairs Committee Advises on legal requirements and overall intellectual property strategy
The OpenStack Releases OpenStack uses a fixed time release cadence First 2 releases where on a 3 month release cycle OpenStack now uses a 6 month release cycle with releases in April & October Aligned with Ubuntu releases Prior to each release a design summit is held for developers and the community Community meets and to discuss priorities and work for the next release Release are named alphabetically Normally named after a city or county in which the design summit is held Austin Oct 2010 Bexar Jan 2011 Cactus Apr 2011 Diablo Oct 2011 Essex Apr 2012 Folsom Oct 2012 Grizzly Apr 2013 Havana Oct 2013 Icehouse Apr2014 Juno Nov2014 6
OpenStack Core Projects OpenStack began with three core projects Compute OpenStack Compute (Nova) Provides the ability to create and manage virtual machines on demand Object Storage Image Management OpenStack Object Storage (Swift) Provides object (file) storage that is API accessible and URL addressable OpenStack Image Management (Glance) Provides a catalog and repository for virtual disk images 7
But there were pieces missing First an Identity Management Solution was added (codenamed Keystone ) Provides authentication and authorization for all the OpenStack Services Can integrate with existing backend directory services like LDAP It also provides a catalog of all services deployed in an OpenStack cloud Next a Dashboard was developed (codenamed Horizon ) Provides web based UI that allows users and administrators to access, provision and manage cloud-based resources (elemental provisioning) The extensible design makes it easy to plug in and integrate third party products and services Customizable for service providers and vendors (branding) 8
And Nova was getting too large Advanced networking functionality was broken out of Nova (originally codenamed Quantum renamed to Neutron ) Provides flexible and scalable network connectivity and IP addresses management for the OpenStack Cloud Users can create their own networks, control traffic and connect their cloud devices Plug-ins developed to support SDN and OpenFlow Recently the volume management code was broken out of Nova (codenamed Cinder ) Provides persistent block level storage devices for use with OpenStack compute instances Manages the creation, attaching and detaching of the block devices to servers The pluggable backend architecture lets users take advantage of commodity gear or advanced block storage services from supported vendors 9
There are 7 core/integrated projects: OpenStack Compute (Nova) OpenStack Object Storage (Swift) OpenStack Image Management (Glance) OpenStack Identity (Keystone) OpenStack Dashboard (Horizon) OpenStack Networking (Neutron) OpenStack Block Storage (Cinder) Projects integrated upcoming releases: Heat (template-based orchestration) Ceilometer (metering data CPU, network, etc.) New projects being incubated: Trove Database Service Ironic Bare metal 10
