HORSE EVALUATION CAREER DEVELOPMENT EVENT PURPOSE The purpose of the FFA Horse Evaluation Career Development Event is to stimulate the study of and interest in equine science selection, management, and production through the agriscience education curriculum. ELIGIBILITY AND REGULATIONS For specific eligibility of participants, refer to the Contests and Awards Booklet. Teams will report directly to the state event. There will be no elimination at the county or district level. In order to compete, teams must pre-register by May 15. EVENT RULES H-2 If a cell phone is seen or heard in the possession of a competitor, that individual student will be disqualified from competition and receive a score of zero. Competitors must enter their name on the scorecard or they will receive a score of zero. Judges will not attempt to figure out who the card belongs to. The team will consist of a maximum of four members. The team s total score will be based on the sum of the points earned by the three highest scoring participants on the team. All materials needed for this event will be furnished. All tack and attire is legal in the selection of classes. To maintain professionalism and safety while competing, students in the horse evaluation CDE are not allowed to wear shorts, cut-off t-shirts or open-toed shoes. STATE EVENT The state event will consist of the following classes/activities. However, the number and type of classes/activities included in the state event is subject to change dependent upon the availability of animals. *If more than 12 teams compete at the state, only the top 12 teams after the written exam and class placing will be allowed to continue and give oral reasons. Four classes will be judged consisting of two halter classes and two performance classes. HALTER CLASSES Halter classes may be represented by the following breeds: Quarter Horse, Conformation Hunter, Appaloosa, Paint, American Saddle Bred, and Morgan. All halter classes will be judged as sound. PERFORMANCE CLASSES Performance classes may include: Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle. Performance classes will be judged as they go in regards to soundness. AQHA rules will be used in regards to head set and head carriage. ORAL REASONS There will be two sets of oral reasons. One set on a halter class and one set on performance class. Notes are not to be used on oral reasons. WRITTEN EXAMINATION A multiple choice exam will be given. The objective exam is designed to determine team members understanding of the equine industry. The exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions.

TIEBREAKERS If ties occur, the following events will be used in order to determine award recipients: 1. Total of oral reasons 2. Total of placing classes 3. Total score on the written exam 4.
