UNITS OF WORK FOR PUPILS WITH MODERATE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (KS 4) Unit 4: Transition Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4) LEARNING INTENTIONS By the end of this unit pupils will have had the opportunity to: review, list and record personal skills, qualities and achievements; review steps necessary for career planning; identify methods of recruitment and selection; develop a personal career plan based on relevant information and guidance; identify and select relevant information to complete recruitment documentation (application form/cv); develop interview skills; experience the world of work first hand; and identify opportunities for Lifelong Learning. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1. Pupils review skills and qualities using Activity Sheet 1(a) My ID Card. 2. Class discuss post-16 options open to them using Activity Sheet 4(a) Which Way Now and complete Activity Sheet 4(b) Personal Career Plan Template. 3. Visit from a Careers Advisor to highlight post-16 options and discuss recruitment and selection methods. 4. Pupils explore: Recruitment Methods e.g: online /newspapers/ shop window/job Centre; and Selection Methods: e.g: application form/letters of application/ CV/interviews. See Teacher Briefing Sheets for Methods of Recruitment and Methods of Selection. Pupils read and complete Activity Sheet 4(c) Methods of Recruitment and Selection. 5. Pupils select a job advertisement that interests them. Using Activity sheet 1(a) My ID Card pupils complete Activity Sheet 4(d) Job Application Form and Activity Sheet 4(e) CV Template. 6. Pupils prepare for mock interviews using Activity Sheet 4(f) Qualities Cards See Teacher Briefing Sheet for Mock Interviews and Activities Sheets 4(g)-4(l). 7. To prepare for a work placement and reflect on the experience pupils complete the leaflet Activity Sheet 4(m) Preparation for Work Experience before and after placement. Pupils attend a work placement and review key areas that reflect working life. Recruitment is the employment of new workers. Businesses need to recruit new workers for several reasons: The business has grown To bring in people who have skills they need To replace employees who have left because of retirement, resignation, promotion or dismissal. They must be paid the same Fair Employment and Treatment Order 1998 - Ensures people of all religious beliefs and political opinions have equal opportunities in employment. 49

This is the process whereby the employer chooses the new employee from the list of applicants who have applied for the position. METHODS OF Application form Curriculum VItae Interviews Testing Presentation SELECTION A form which applicants complete, making it easy for applicants to be compared A list of all the applicants qualifications, experience and achievements Employers meet applicants and ask questions to judge how suitable they would be in that particular job e.g. for an Office Clerk position, the applicant may be asked to perform a typing speed test Where the applicant may be given an area to discuss for a set period of time Responsibilities of the employers and employees in the selection process: HONESTY e.g. the employer must present accurate and clear information in the job advertisement; the employee must provide honest information with regard to qualifications and experience OBJECTIVITY the employer has a responsibility to find the best person regardless of any other consideration e.g. religion FAIRNESS the same conditions must be applied to each applicant e.g. the same time allocated, the same questions asked CONFIDENTIALITY both employee and employer must treat information learned about each other as strictly confidential. 50
UNITS OF WORK FOR PUPILS WITH MODERATE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (KS 4) Unit 4: Transition Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4) TEACHER BRIEFING SHEET MOCK INTERVIEWS Teacher explains the three main issues to be addressed: What you do What you say How you look. 1 Circle of Truth Pupils sit in a circle, teacher asks them to: Move if you - have blue eyes - are 1st born - are wearing black shoes - have brushed your teeth - are wearing earrings - like pizza. etc Discuss The interviewer can see the colour of your hair or shoes and that you look neat and tidy. Can they tell, just by looking at you that you are hard working or if you are an honest person? You need to tell the interviewer a bit about yourself. 2 Qualities Activity Sheet 4(f) Qualities Cards What are employers looking for in their workers? Pupils sit in a circle. Place the Qualities face down in the centre. Pupils select one and discuss. Consider how they can prove to an employer they are honest, helpful etc. (they need evidence or examples). 3 What you do Activity Sheet 4(g) What You Do Has Value... Everything you do has value. Everything you do says something about the kind of person you are. Display the following headings pupils make a list. (whole class or group activity). Discuss: Arrival time Nerves how to relax Handshake Eye contact Voice Body language. 7 Demo Interview Activity Sheet 4(k) Mock Interview Questions Using role play the teacher acts out a bad then a good interview - discuss. Pupils in turn, act out a good interview scenario (whole class or in pairs). 8 Mock Interviews Arrange for an employer to host the Mock Interviews. This information sheet may be used to further develop teacher-led discussion. What is stress? Work related stress has been described as the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them.
