CARL ROCHET SCHOLARSHIP For Students Pursuing a Degree in Communications and/or Journalism The Renton Community Foundation is pleased to administer the Carl Rochet Scholarship Program and offers financial awards to qualifying individuals seeking to further their education and/or enhance their career opportunities. Carl Rochet was a prominent newspaper publisher in the Renton community. He created a permanent endowment by providing the original funds for our community foundation specifically to assist young people in pursuing a career in the newspaper field. Since that time, the board has broadened the original purpose to include students pursuing careers in the fields of communication and/or journalism. Selection Criteria: The goal of the Carl Rochet Scholarship Program is to award a minimum of one scholarship a year of up to $2,500 to qualifying students working towards a four-year degree in communications and/or journalism. Eligibility: Student must: Be a U.S. citizen Have earned a high school diploma or GED. Be enrolled in a full or part-time program at an accredited college. Earn a family annual income of $45,000 or below, or demonstrate a financial need. Must live within the Renton School District boundaries or have graduated from a Renton high school. General Information: The Carl Rochet Scholarship Program is a competitive process and awards made through this program will be based on a combination of recommendations and submission essay. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Scholarship may vary in size depending on available resources, but will generally range between $1,000 - $2,500. Awards may be used for tuition, school fees, and academic expenses such as books and test fees. Awards will not be granted for housing, food, transportation or utilities. Scholarships are not automatically renewable. An updated application must be submitted each year funds are available. Receipt of an award in a previous year is not a factor in the selection process the following year. 1

If conditions change under which this scholarship was awarded (the student does not complete his/her enrollment or decides to change programs), the Foundation must be notified immediately. In such circumstances, the Foundation reserves the right to cancel the scholarship or request a refund. Required Information: A completed application with all attachments must be postmarked by the revised date of April 16, 2012. Applications will not be accepted without this postmark. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please carefully review your application packet before submission to make sure all required information is included: Personal essay (not more than one page, single sided) highlighting your academic and community achievements and outlining your personal goals as related to the awarding of this scholarship. Two current letters of recommendation from former employers, advisors, professors/teachers or volunteer supervisors, dated within the past 12 months on school, business or organizational letterhead. Please include phone numbers. Letters should address your work habits, character, pursuit of academic or career goals and your relationship to the person writing the letter. No letters from relatives will be accepted. Verification of admittance to educational institution of choice. Most recent official transcript(s). (Not required for certification programs.)
