Associate Degree An academic degree awarded by community colleges upon completion of general education courses and electives. Typically, an associate degree requires 60 credit hours. Completion of a general education program is required for a baccalaureate degree. In other words, students on the 2+2 pathway to a bachelor s degree as well as students attending baccalaureate institutions for 4 years must complete a general education program General education courses provide students with fundamental skills and knowledge in mathematics, English, arts, humanities, and physical, biological, and social sciences. Electives taken as part of an associate degree program are usually introductory-level or pre-requisite courses preparing students for their intended, upper-division major.
