1 College of Health and Human Performance Office of the Dean DATE: November 1, 2012 MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: SUBJECT: University Curriculum Committee Dr. Christopher Janelle, Interim Associate Dean for Academic & Student Affairs or Proposed BS Health Education Curriculum Revisions The College of Health & Human Performance is requesting changes to its undergraduate program curriculum for the Health Education degree program (BSHE). Specifically, the college is proposing the addition of two specialization tracks for our BSHE degree program: Community Health Promotion (CHP), and Pre-Professional Health Studies (PPHS). The specific curricular changes proposed for each specialization is highlighted below. There are several important goals driving these proposed curricular changes. First, the proposed addition of specializations allows students the opportunity to better customize their academic studies to their post-baccalaureate plans. Second, the specific course adjustments will increase access to students interested in the Community Health Promotion specialization, which is important considering the significant CHP employment shortages in many state and local health departments and community organizations. Third, adjustments in the Pre-Professional Health Studies specialization will reduce the excess hours threat for high-achieving students that plan to pursue postgraduate studies in clinical health professions. Community Health Promotion (CHP) specialization The Community Health Promotion specialization provides a specialized curriculum for students planning to pursue traditional health education careers, such as employment with governmental health agencies, non-profit and community health organizations, worksite health promotion programs, as well as preparation for graduate coursework in health education and related fields. Curricular changes: Eliminating the chemistry requirement, because it is not a common preparatory course for health education coursework. Reducing the critical tracking GPA from 2.8 to 2.5, to better align the GPA expectation with the previously revised UF grading scale (i.e. change in the value of a plus grade, and the addition of minus grades). Removing HSC102 (Personal and Family Health) from the required prerequisite courses list (students expected to complete before the start of their junior-level coursework), and adding it to the required major courses list (students begin this coursework as a junior). Because HSC102 is rarely offered at other Florida institutions, transfer students must use one of their electives to complete this course. By moving the course to the major courses list, the course requirement is built into the junior-level curriculum and transfer students are not required to eliminate elective credits to satisfy this requirement. The Foundation for The Gator Nation An Equal Opportunity Institution
2 Removing HSC57 (Health and Medical Terminology) from the required major courses list. This specialization is designed for entry-level Health Educators, and medical terminology is not necessary for students who do not plan to pursue professional health programs. Note: Students in the Community Health Promotion specialization are permitted to register for this course, if desired. Pre-Professional Health Studies (PPHS) specialization The Pre-Professional Health Studies specialization provides a specialized and more flexible curriculum for students planning to attend professional health programs, such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, optometry, physician assistant, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Curricular changes: Removing MAC1105 and requiring MAC1140 or higher level course to satisfy this critical tracking requirement. Adding CHM2045L to the chemistry requirement, because this is a requirement for all professional health programs. Removing MCB2000/MCB2000L and BSC2009/BSC2009L as course options for satisfying the microbiology/biology critical tracking requirement. Requiring BSC2010/BSC2010L as the required course for the microbiology/biology critical tracking requirement, because this is a requirement for all professional health programs. Removing HSC201 (Community and Environmental Health) from the required major courses list, as this course is specifically designed for students in the Community Health Promotion track. Note: Students in the Pre-Professional Health Studies specialization are permitted to register for this course, if desired. Adding HSC42 (Patient Health Education) to the required major courses list, as this course is specifically designed for students in the Pre-Professional Health Studies specialization. Adding a part-time internship option (6-credits) during the final semester of the degree program, to provide greater flexibility to pre-professional health students who need to complete coursework their final semester. Note: The fulltime internship will remain as an option for students who do not wish to complete a part-time internship and concurrently register for coursework. Reducing the number of courses required from the Department specialization courses list from 6 (18-credits) to 4 (12-credits). This reduction in required credits will provide greater flexibility to pre-professional health students for completing pre-health program requisites, while also reducing the excess hours threat. The Department of Health Education & Behavior faculty voted on this proposal and unanimously support the request as proposed. The faculty believe the proposed changes will better meet the needs of future HEB undergraduate students and help them to be more competitive for employment and graduate school opportunities. The proposal was approved at the HHP College Curriculum Committee and the Dean s Office supports the proposed changes to the BS in Health Education Program. If you have further questions, please contact me or Dr. Sadie Sanders, Undergraduate Coordinator at or ssanders@hhp.ufl.edu.
3 Health Education and Behavior The Department of Health Education and Behavior, with a foundation in the social and biological sciences, focuses on health information and theory application. Students learn techniques to promote healthy lifestyle choices in individual and group settings, with special attention given to diversity and culturally appropriate health education methodologies. About This Major College: Health and Human Performance Degree: Bachelor of Science in Health Education Specializations: NoneCommunity Health Promotion Hours for the Degree: 120 Minor: No Combined-Degree Program: Yes Website: Overview The Bachelor of Science in Health Education degree program allows students maximum flexibility to choose department specialization coursework during the junior and senior years that relates to personal interests in the health field. Students can focus their studies on interest areas in community and public health education, health promotion in the worksite setting or general health studies as they prepare for professional health occupations. Students with a primaryn interest in community and public health education, or worksite health promotion should select the Community Health Promotion specialization (CHP). Coursework in the CHP specialization iscomplete coursework focused on illness and disease prevention among special target groups within a particular community, with the ultimate goal of providing practical health information to diverse population groups through the use of theory-driven educational methodsbehavioral interventions. Community health and public health educatorspromotion specialists generally find employment in local, state or national government health agencies (state or county health departments, CDC, NIH) and in voluntary public health units such as the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes and Planned Parenthood. Worksite health promotion specialists find employment opportunities within diverse small and large businesses. The CHP specialization is also appropriate for students planning to pursue graduate programs in health education or related fields (public health, health administration, and epidemiology and disease prevention). Note: Students with interests in health promotion complete coursework that prepares for careers in employee-assistance programs and corporate or hospital-based wellness centers. Many companies utilizing large employee populations have noticed a significant decrease in absenteeism and an increase in work productivity for those employees actively participating in
4 an employee wellness program. In addition, insurance rates tend to be lower for those employees thus providing an incentive for employers to offer such programs. Employee wellness programs can include sessions for smoking cessation, nutritional guidelines, stress relief and injury prevention, and might include running an on-site gym. Students who want in-depth knowledge of health concerns can complete coursework in general health studies. This interest area allows students to gain knowledge on a variety of health issues plaguing diverse population groups. Students are also able to complete required prerequisite coursework for professional health programs such as nursing, medical school, physician assistant, occupational therapy and physical therapy, as well as graduate programs in health education or related fields (public health, health administration, epidemiology and disease prevention). Students majoring in health education and behavior are also eligible for the Bachelor/Master of Science combined degree program, thus receiving both degrees within approximately five years. Students interested in this program should schedule an appointment with the department academic adviser. Critical Tracking To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements. Equivalent critical tracking courses as determined by the State of Florida Common Course Prerequisites may be used for transfer students.
