The Membership Committee considers applications for election and reelection of UCAR Members and Academic Affiliates, and makes recommendations to the Members at the Annual Members' Meeting. The committee also regularly reviews the UCAR Membership criteria and procedures.

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA (from the UCAR Bylaws, Article 2, Sections 2.0-2.3) Only universities and other nonprofit corporations organized and operated for educational or scientific purposes, and located within the United States, Canada, or Mexico, are eligible for UCAR membership provided they meet the following criteria: Program of Studies and Research. Has made a definitive, substantial, and continuing commitment to a full, coherent, and integrated program of course studies and dissertation research leading to the doctorate in one or more of the atmospheric sciences or related fields *; Progress in the Atmospheric Sciences. Has made a definitive, substantial, and continuing commitment to progress in the atmospheric sciences or related fields as evidenced by scholarly works of significance by its faculty in the atmospheric sciences or related fields and; Participation in the activities of UCAR. Has made, or as might be the case of new Members is willing to make, a clear commitment of active participation in UCAR activities, including its governance, programs, and facilities. *Note: "Related" fields are those that deal directly with the study of the atmosphere (e.g., astrophysics, biogeochemistry, hydrology, geography, oceanography, space physics, and related societal research).

On 16 April, 2007, the site visit team (Jack Fellows, Jim Miller and Diane Pataki) visited the University of Delaware. The site team was hosted by Dr. A.D. Kirwan (Professor of Physical Ocean Science and Engineering, Dr. Lian-Ping Wang (Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering), and David Legates (Associate Professor of Geography). Most of the atmospheric and related activities take place within five of the seven university colleges. Membership Committee Report New Application for Membership University of Delaware

The University of Delaware has 55 faculty and research staff and offer over 35 graduate degrees in atmospheric and related sciences. Over the past five years, they have awarded over 100 Ph.D. degrees in the atmospheric and related sciences. Research at Delaware includes all of the topics mentioned above in the colleges and much more. These research programs appear to be well recognized in the community and are funded by DOE, NSF, EPA, NASA, NOAA, and also private funds. Delaware facilities include: a broad range of environmental observing facilities and equipment, Space physics, ocean engineering, fluid mechanics, andcomputational labs, the Cannon and Smith marine laboratories on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, on the shores of Delaware Bay; this campus also supports a research vessel.

The committee recommends the election of the University of Delaware to UCAR Membership for an eight-year term beginning in January 2008.

The Committee recommends re-election of the following to UCAR membership for eight-year terms beginning in January 2008: California Institute of Technology University of California Davis Georgia Institute of Technology McGill University Naval Postgraduate School Nevada System of Higher Education University of New Hampshire Oregon State University Purdue University Utah State University

The committee welcomed two new Academic Affiliates this year: Central Michigan University Metropolitan State College
