PROGRAM OVERVIEW Canada College of Education s TESOL Standard 1 Program is designed according to the guidelines of TESL Canada. This Certification Program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to non-native English speakers but would like to study online. This program consists of 10 units of study that must be completed within six months. The program is structured through approximately 100 hours of online instructions and 20 hours of practicum. 100 hours (approx.) of online self-directed learning 10 hours of directed observation of experienced, qualified teachers. 10 hours of teaching practice with a sponsor teacher As a self-directed online program, all learning materials will be supplied through Canada College of Education using direct e-mail. Students will be expected to purchase all studying materials through Canada College of Education, which will be mailed to each student through Postal Service or can be picked up at the College directly. The trainees will be able to explore teaching, learning and language through task-based, participatory and hands-on experiences. PROGRAM BACKGROUND TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Canada College of Education uses TESOL to describe our teacher training programs for both native and non-native speakers of English. Also, widely used in the language teaching community, this term is relatively new and is often used as a generic term that includes all types of English language classes. What can I do with a TESOL Certificate? There are various settings for you to put your TESOL skills and knowledge to use - teaching ESL overseas, teaching international students in a Canadian private ESL institute, tutoring students, or working for a government sponsored program for Landed Immigrants or Newcomers to Canada. Furthermore, you will also be able to teach Business English. What will I learn in the Canada College TESOL program? The following topics are covered in the program: Language learning and teaching theories Current methodology Lesson and unit planning Teaching language systems (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, functions) Language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) Testing and evaluation How is the course organized? The Canada College of Education TESOL Program is designed in accordance to the guidelines of 'TESL Canada. It is an online program that includes 100 hours of online instructions and 20 hours practicum. Trainees are expected to complete the Standard 1 Certification Program within six months of their studies. Using the Canada College of Education method, trainees will explore language learning and teaching through task-based, participatory and interactive experiences. The content is based on the most recent research in language acquisition and language education. All resources and materials are to be purchased by the TESOL teacher trainees. Program Completion Upon successful completion of all program requirements students will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed all of the requirements of the program, and will be eligible to apply for the Standard 1 TESL Certificate from TESL Canada. Students will also receive a transcript with an overall grade, as well as a letter of recommendation from CCE.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS All interested applicants applying to the Canada College of Education TESOL Program must have completed their senior matriculation (Grade 12) in Canada, or completed an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking university. Non-native English speakers must show proof of English Proficiency as outlined in the table below. This must be submitted to the Canada College of Education upon your application and enrolment submission. Applicants who are accepted by the Canada College of Education without a University degree will not qualify for TESL Canada Level 1 Instructor Certification from TESL Canada. Equivalent Admission Requirements Academic standing from other provinces and other countries recognized by the College as equivalent to an Ontario High-School diploma will be considered for admission. Generally, the standards are as follows: o o o A valid Secondary School Graduation Diploma at the General Level, or equivalent, for the following provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan. United States of America - Grade 12 (A minimum of 16 units of credit at the Secondary School level; at least four credits of which are in English). All other applicants will be considered on an individual basis. All applications are assessed by our Board of Admissions who are empowered to accept, defer or reject the admission of any applicant to a program. You will be advised of your acceptance by an official letter (or Email) from the Admissions Office.
The table below outlines the accepted ways to meet the entry requirements. Any one of the following English proficiency tests will be accepted in the Certification Program. English Language Proficiency Tests Score-Program Trainees TOEFL Computer based 213 / Paper based 550 and TWE or Writing Score on CBT 5 recommended 5.5 and TSE 55 recommended 60 or ibt 80 overall with a minimum score 20 in each area or IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.5 in each skill area or MELAB 85/ with a speaking test score 4 or CAE, CPE, BEC Higher Cambridge Advanced English ( Grade A), Cambridge Proficiency English ( Grade C or higher), Business English Cambridge Higher exam ( Grade A) or Can TEST Listening 5, Reading 5, Writing 5, Speaking 4.5 or CAEL Band 60 overall, with a minimum of 60 in each of the writing and speaking subtests or High school graduation from a high school in Canada, including minimum English Grade 12 score of 70% or Completion of an undergraduate degree from a university where English is the language of instruction and administration or Common European Framework or Canadian Language Benchmarks C1 CLB 9 in each area Students who do not meet the requirements listed above but who also wish to continue with the Program will unfortunately not be qualified for the TESL Canada professional certification.
