Forward Welcome to the School of Social Work and Human Services The School of Social Work and Human Services offers a variety of programs including, certificate, diploma, and degree options. This handbook has been designed as a resource for SWHS students to quickly reference information about student centered services, resources and opportunities. It is important for students to remember to take advantage of the many services provided by UFV. These services are designed to enhance your university experience and to help to alleviate some of the stress and pressure students may feel while completing their program. This handbook is not intended to replace the UVF Academic Calendar or The Official Student s Guide to Services at UFV but rather to compliment them. We encourage our students to use the SWHS website. You can find program and course information, locate forms, book an advising appointment, find answers to questions about field education and much more. Our webpages also have contact information and bios for permanent faculty and current sessional instructors. It is important for students to note that faculty, staff, and sessional instructors will communicate with students exclusively through their UFV student email accounts. Please make a habit of checking your student email frequently and using it to communicate with faculty, sessional instructors, and staff. BCASW Code of Ethics Ethical behavior is at the core of every profession. The BCASW Code of Ethics was jointly adopted by BCASW and the BC College of Social Workers in January 2003 and consists of eleven principles: 1. A social worker shall maintain the best interest of the client as the primary professional obligation. 2. A social worker shall respect the intrinsic worth of the persons she or he serves in her or his professional relationships with them. 3. A social worker shall carry out her or his professional duties and obligations with integrity and objectivity. 4. A social worker shall have and maintain competence in the provision of a social work service to a client. 5. A social worker shall not exploit the relationship with a client for personal benefit, gain or gratification. 6. A social worker shall protect the confidentiality of all professionally acquired information. She or he shall disclose such information only when required or allowed by law to do so, or when clients have consented to disclosure. 7. A social worker who engages in another profession, occupation, affiliation or calling shall not allow these outside interests to affect the social work relationship with the client, professional judgment, independence and/or competence. 8. A social worker shall not provide social work services or otherwise behave in a manner that discredits the profession of social work or diminishes the public s trust in the profession. 9. A social worker shall promote service, program and agency practices and policies that are consistent with this Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice of the BC College of Social Workers. 10. Please take the time to carefully review and understand policy 70 Student Academic Misconduct and policy 204 Student Non-academic Misconduct. These policies deal directly with Academic and Personal Misconduct. They define plagiarism and cheating and outline the procedures and guidelines for dealing with these matters. Academic dishonesty and professional suitability are taken seriously by the School of Social Work and Human Services and the School firmly implements these polices. The basis for interaction among all members of the University is mutual respect, co-operation, and understanding. Harassment of any kind violates fundamental rights, personal worth, and human dignity. All members of the University community are entitled to an atmosphere free of harassment while pursuing university-related activities. The Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Office provides confidential services to students, faculty, staff, and administrators at the University of the Fraser Valley, who seek advice, assessment, and assistance in the resolution of interpersonal conflicts between members of the University community. The Office is responsible for ensuring that the University's Harassment Prevention Policy is enforced and that members of the University community comply with British Columbia's Human Rights Code. The Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Office will assist complainants to determine whether their request falls within the jurisdiction of the Office and, if not, where they might be referred in order to address their concern. If the issue does fall within the jurisdiction of the Office, the Officer will offer services to assist the individual to seek redress for his or her concerns. The program advising office is located in B165n on the Abbotsford campus. The program advisor can help you develop and maintain your program plan, answer questions about pre and co requisites and discuss electives. To book an appointment with the Program Advisor please complete an advising appointment request form. This form is found on the Program Advising tab of the SWHS webpages. Withdrawing from a Course Students must formally withdraw form classes through the Office of the Registrar or My UFV. For information about last the day to withdraw without a W appearing on your transcript and the last day to withdraw and receive a partial refund or fee reduction please refer to the list of Important Registration Dates on the Office of the Registrar webpages. Note: Non-attendance at a course is not a withdrawal. If you do not formally withdraw from a course and you do not complete it, you will receive an NC (no credit) grade. NC grades are calculated as "0" in your GPA. Important Campus Info Student ID Card/Campus Card and U-Pass Your Campus Card is your university ID, library card, print and photocopy card, Student Activity Centre membership card, and validation for the U-Pass. The Campus Card Office is located in room B239 on the Abbotsford campus. Daily parking may be purchased from parking meters located throughout the campus or by purchasing a semester E-Permit parking pass. Safe Walk and After-Dark Parking Areas for Women If a student is nervous about walking to their car or the bus stop, Security offers the Safe Walk program 9:00 am to 10:30 pm Monday to Friday during each semester. To request a Safe Walk, call 1-855-239-7654. Women's designated parking stalls are available in the evenings after 4:30pm in Lot 6 and Lot 7 on the Abbotsford campus. Lot 7 is a designated employee area during the day. Lost and Found Campus Security handles the lost and found. If you lose an item check with the security office to see if it has been handed in. If you find an item please hand it in as soon as possible to the security office. More information is available at http://www.ufv.ca/security/lost-found/. Student Work and Volunteerism on Campus The Work-Study Program provides eligible students with an opportunity to obtain an on campus, part-time job with a flexible schedule in a variety of areas. Students must meet eligibility requirements and apply for a Work Study Position through CareerLink. Student Services Aboriginal Access Services Aboriginal Access Services provides support for Aboriginal students who identify themselves as Metis, Inuit, status First Nations, and non-status First Nations. More information available at http://www.ufv.ca/arc.htm Academic Support Centre The Academic Support Centre provides support and feedback for students working on writing assignments for their various UFV courses including essays, research papers, annotated bibliographies, and literature reviews. To improve the quality of your writing, instructors will help you to develop strategies for drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading your own work. Assessment Services The Assessment Services Centre provides a number of assessment services to UFV students including UFV placement tests, invigilation services for makeup exams, and assistance with Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. The career center also manages Cooperative Education and Work-Study programs. They offer individual appointments, workshops, training sessions and outreach events related to student wellness and study skills. Students can use the self-serve media prep lab to produce class presentations, assignments and seminar projects. A variety of equipment is also available for students to sign out including digital camcorders and cameras, slide projectors, microphones, and digital audio recorders. This guide has been developed as a general introduction to resources in the field of social work and human services. It is not a comprehensive listing of sources, but a starting point from which you can begin your research according to your information needs. Colleen Bell is the Liaison Librarian for the School of Social Work and Human Services you can contact her with questions and for help with services offered by the library colleen.bell@ufv.ca SWHS Field Education Field education is an integral component of social work and human services education and a program requirement for all students. A primary responsibility of the Field Education Team at our School is to ensure that students are provided with agency-based experiences that maximize opportunities for learning and applying social work values, knowledge and skills. It is an experiential form of teaching and learning through which students have opportunities to develop as professional workers within supervised practice contexts. The goal is to provide learning opportunities that engage students in diverse direct and indirect practice activities that reflect principles of social justice, equality and respect for diversity. Students are encouraged to be active, self-directed learners throughout their field placement courses. In addition to developing professional knowledge and skills, field placement opportunities prepare students to be reflective and self-evaluating workers. Students will complete two seminars along with their respective field education placement hours when taking the CSW or SSD program. These seminars are designed to provide students with opportunities to reflect on linkages between theory and practice while addressing a variety of professional development issues. Apply for Field Placement It is necessary to apply to complete your field placements in order to complete the SWHS program. Applications for your respected field placements will be given to you by your Field Placement Seminar instructor. Please note that all field placements have pre/co requisites. 7 P a g e

Challenging Practicums Some students enter the SWHS programs with considerable professional work experience. We recognize that work experience allows people to learn and acquire knowledge, skills and abilities. We welcome students who meet the policy criteria to apply to challenge the first year field placement. For details regarding the Challenge policy, procedures, and eligibility requirements please contact your Field Placement seminar instructor. Criminal Record Check A record check completed through the Ministry of Justice is required by the University of the Fraser Valley before a student can be placed with an agency to complete a practicum. Students cannot begin their practicum placement until the School of Social Work and Human Services has received a clearance letter from the Ministry of Justice. Students are responsible for completing the online application and for the $28 processing fee. For more information about the Ministry of Justice and the Criminal Records Review Program please visit their website at http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/criminal-records-review/ The School of Social Work and Human Services is registered for the online applicant based criminal record check service offered though the Ministry of Justice. Each student is responsible for completing the online application and for providing the $28 payment. Below you will find a link to the online application and an access code to gain entry and to identify yourself as a UFV student. Online Link: https://justice.gov.bc.ca/ecrc/ Access Code: The Field Education Assistant will provide this information to all School of Social Work and Human Services students. If you need the access code and have not received it please contact the Field Education Assistant at 604-504 -7441 local 4104. Once the Ministry of Justice link is open scroll to the bottom of the page 1. Enter the access code in the box provided 2. Enter the characters shown in the on screen image 3. Then select Request a New Criminal Record Check 4. Follow the on screen prompts You will be asked to confirm that the displayed organization information is correct. University of the Fraser Valley - Social Work and Human Services should be listed. You will be asked for your consent. You will complete the criminal record check application. You will complete the identity verification process. You will complete the credit card payment page the fee is $28.00. Your criminal record check clearance letter will be sent to the Field Education Assistant. Please Note: A municipal police detachment or RCMP record cannot be accepted by the School of Social Work and Human Services. Record checks completed through these agencies do not meet the requirements set out by the B.C. Government's Criminal Records Review Program. 8 P a g e
