Triton College Visual Communication Assessment 2015 1 Visual Communication Program Assessment Revised 2014-2015 Graphic Design Portfolio Checklist/Assessment The VIC 282 Portfolio Design and Production course requires that all students graduating with a certificate or degree in Graphic Design complete a printed and digital portfolio. The portfolio is a compilation of a minimum of 45 portfolio pieces as described in the VIC282 course syllabus. The portfolio requirements were developed through information gathered from industry advisory members and transfer school requirements. Students in the Visual Communication courses complete original design pieces to be used as part of their capstone course/portfolio. The purpose of the portfolio process is for the student to demonstrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the program. Students in VIC282 are assessed in spring of 2015 for their ability to demonstrate knowledge of design topics and apply the general design topics to the pieces in the student portfolio. VIC Graphic Design Portfolio Assessment Tool 2014-2015 This assessment tool was used to evaluate the overall success of the students in each of the topic areas by assessing skills demonstrated in the VIC282001 Portfolio capstone course for Spring 2015. The instructor uses project assessments to keep record of student success and compiles the results into an overall percentage of student success for each of the objectives. Topic Description of Objective of the Topic Student Success 2015 A- Design Process With the successful application of the topic students will: 1. Client Specifications Demonstrate accurate recording and application of the information gathered in the process of receiving information for client specifications in a design piece or pieces 2. Concept Development Demonstrate application sketching, digital layout concepts, folding dummy, color proofing and other concept development techniques 3. Message Research Demonstrate research techniques to determine and record branding requirements, competition to client/company, body copy, images, production requirements and other research materials necessary for the successful completion of the design B- Design Theories With the successful application of the topic students will: 1. Theories Demonstrate general application of each of the design theories in the development of the design concepts including Proportion, Unity, Composition, Balance, Contrast, Repetition, and Negative Space. 2. Hierarchy/Proportion Apply size and color of elements to attract the target audience to the elements that are significant to the message 3. Synthesis/Unity Apply elements consistent with the branding of the product to attract the

Triton College Visual Communication Assessment 2013 2 target audience 4. Composition/Style Apply overall style to attract target audience and produce aesthetic result 5. Balance Demonstrate the application of asymmetrical or symmetrical balance as themes throughout design pieces consistent with the message, style and to attract the target audience 6. Contrast Apply a proper variety of sizes, space and color/tints to create interest and assist in the proportional importance of each of the elements on the piece 7. Repetition Apply a pattern of elements, sizes, space and color/tints to create eye flow, connect similar elements and improve reader comprehension of the message 8. Negative Space Apply negative space to enhance the importance of elements proportional to the message Topic Description of Objective of the Topic Student Success 2015 C-Typography Fonts With the successful application of the topic students will: 1. Font Identification Identify the type classification and readability specifications of the main type classifications including Pointed Serif, Rounded Serif, Square Serif, Sans Serif, Rounded Sans Serif, Script, Cursive, Textletter and Specialty 2. Font Specifications Demonstrate application of selecting a font style that meets the target 3. Font Size Demonstrate application of selecting font sizes that meets the target 4. Font Contrast Demonstrate application of selecting a maximum of two or three contrasting fonts that work with the main font style and meet the target 5. Font Readability Demonstrate application of font style for best readability of copy including uppercase, bold, italic, rule below, etc. 6. Font Kerning Demonstrate application of manually Kerning specific characters to improve horizontal spacing for readability in a headline or subhead 7. Font Proportion Demonstrate application of font copyfitting without extending or condensing the original font specifically in body copy or in paragraphs 8. Font Style Demonstrate application of font styles to meet readability and client specifications or design specifications for colored type, reverse type, printing over a color or printing over a photograph

Triton College Visual Communication Assessment 2013 3 9. Font Installation Demonstrate the selection and installation of fonts onto a specific computer station 10. Font Production Demonstrate the process of saving a font with a file for the production of a piece as a separate file and as a PDF D- Typography With the successful application of the topic students will: Paragraphs 1. Type Alignment Identify the type alignment and readability specifications of the type alignments including Left Align, Right Align, Justified Align, Centered Align, Text Wrap Align, Contour Align, Alignment on a path and Vertical Alignment of individual characters to form a word or headline/subhead 2. Type Alignment Demonstrate application of selecting a maximum of two or three type Consistency alignments per piece to improve readability and eye flow of the piece. When possible work with a grid as a template basis for alignment of all elements on the piece. 3. Type Tracking Demonstrate application of manually tracking to improve horizontal 4. Type Tracking Paragraphs spacing for readability in a headline or subhead Demonstrate application of manually tracking type in a style sheet to improve the fit of type on a page without sacrificing the readability of the copy (not single paragraphs in a body of type) 5. Line Length Demonstrate application of selecting line lengths of between 55 and 65 characters for body copy of 9-12 points 6. Line Spacing Demonstrate application of selecting line spacing for improved readability and consistent vertical spacing including leading, space before paragraph, and space after paragraph 7. Horizontal Spacing Demonstrate application of selecting consistent horizontal spacing for paragraph indents, bulleted text, and numbered elements 8. Pen Tool Demonstrate application of creating accurate straight and curved lines using the least amount of anchor points. Curved lines should contain only curves, not a series of straight lines connected in a curved shape 3. Vector Brushes Demonstrate application of limiting the amount of brushes used on a piece to avoid Postscript issues 4. Vector Symbols Demonstrate application of symbols instead of repeating brush strokes to improve file size and Postscript output 5. Opacity verses Tints Demonstrate application of tint screens to create a lighter color when creating a piece to be printed. Opacity may be used for web design and for raster images. 6. Drop Shadows and other Raster Filters Demonstrate the limited application raster filters for vector output to avoid Postscript output issues F-Raster Art and Photos With the successful application of the topic students will: 1. Raster Images Identify and define the difference between the vector art and raster art and determine the application of each for client specifications 2.
