VIRUS BULLETIN AUTHORIZED REPRINT EXCERPTS FROM VIRUS BULLETIN COMPARATIVE REVIEWS AUGUST DECEMBER 2010 VIRUS BULLETIN VB100 TESTING The basic requirements for a product to achieve VB100 certification status are that a product detects, both on demand and on access, in its default settings, all malware known to be In the Wild at the time of the review, and generates no false positives when scanning a set of clean files. Various other tests are also carried out as part of the comparative review process, including speed and overhead measurements and RAP ( and Proactive) tests. The RAP tests measure products detection rates across four distinct sets of malware samples. The first three of these comprise malware first seen in each of the three weeks prior to product submission and measure how quickly product developers and labs react to the steady flood of new malware. The fourth test set consists of malware samples first seen in the week after product submission. This test set is used to gauge products ability to detect new and unknown samples proactively, using heuristic and generic techniques. While the results of these secondary tests do not affect a product s qualification for VB100 certification, they are included to provide the reader with a better overall picture of product performance. AUGUST 2010: WINDOWS VISTA BUSINESS EDITION SERVICE PACK 2 Windows Vista. Not the most lovable of platforms. It was released to a barrage of bad press, faced all kinds of criticisms, from slowness to insecurity to downright ugliness, and wasn t really considered reliable until the release of service pack 2 by which time Windows 7 was on the horizon promising more of the same only better. The VB test team had entertained vague hopes that, once Windows 7 was out, we might be spared the trauma of another Vista test, but considering the surprisingly large user base still maintained by the now outmoded operating system (estimates are that it still runs on over 20% of systems), it seemed a little premature to give up on it entirely. So, this may be one last hurrah for a platform that has caused us much grief and aggravation in the past. No reboot was needed to finish off, and the whole job was complete in a minute or so.

Once again, however, we noted that, despite what appeared to be options to enable it, we were unable to persuade the product to unpack archive files on access. Generally, the product ran through the tests pretty solidly, but we did observe a few minor issues with the interface, with a number of scans reaching 99% and remaining there without ever reaching the end. Also, in the most stressful portions of the on-access tests we saw some messages warning that the scanner had stopped working, but in fact it appeared to be still running OK, and no gap in protection was discernable. Scanning speeds were pretty decent, especially given the thorough defaults on demand, and there were some reasonable and reassuringly stable file access times. Memory usage was among the lowest in this month s comparative, with CPU drain not breaking the bank either. Detection rates were as excellent as ever, with some superb RAP scores; no issues emerged in the WildList or clean sets, and ESET continues its monster unbroken run of VB100 passes.

Nevertheless, the 2003 version, closest in spirit as it is to the evergreen Windows XP, remains widely used and relied on for its relative maturity, stability and dependable performance. Products available to protect the platform are, of course, not limited to dedicated server editions, and this month s comparative was open to all products expected to operate on the operating system. As usual, however, the server test was somewhat less oversubscribed than some of our recent desktop comparatives, with a much more modest, but still fairly broad field of entrants. With a large cluster of the notoriously tough W32/Virut strains included in our core WildList set this month, several of which were added into the most recent list issued just days before the deadline for our test sets (a week before the product deadline), several providers especially those who have had issues with these families in the recent past chose to give this difficult test a miss, judging discretion to be the better part of valour. However, many others bravely stood up to be counted, and are due a salute for their openness and consistency. Tests proceeded rapidly, with some decent scanning speeds, overheads and CPU use, and very low memory consumption. Our main scan of infected sets was delayed somewhat thanks to the GUI sticking at 99% for some time, until we realized the scanning was complete but had failed to report this to the world. Harvesting results from the clear and reliable logging system showed the usual stratospheric scores across the board; a couple of adware items spotted in the clean sets do nothing to dent a sterling performance, easily earning ESET yet another VB100 award for its record collection. Oct 2010 DECEMBER 2010: WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL Windows 7 is no longer the fresh-faced new kid on the block, having matured into a solid and widely trusted platform with strong growth in usage figures. Estimates are that around 20% of desktops worldwide are now running on the latest version of Microsoft s latest operating system. The decline in use of the evergreen XP appears to be gathering pace although for now it remains the most widely used platform and Windows 7 seems in with a chance of exceeding XP s popularity within the next 12 months. After the last comparative review on a server platform saw no let-up in the ever-increasing number of products eager to join our tests, the return to Windows 7 was always likely to bring in a monster haul of submissions. As submissions streamed in on the test deadline, we were disappointed by a few notable no-shows the world s largest security provider among them but gratified, surprised and eventually terrified by the huge number of entries. The final tally came in at 64 submissions, breaking our previous record by a handful.

The product comes as a slender 41MB package including all required updates, and the installation process is zippy and simple, Dec 2010 enlivened by the offer to join a community feedback scheme and the choice of whether or not to detect greyware. No reboot is needed to finish. The interface has been stable for some time now, and needs no changing; it has a good clean design, seeming sturdy and serious at all times but never ugly, and providing an excellent level of finetuning controls. In places it is perhaps a little repetitive, with seemingly the same items appearing in several places, and we found the scheduler a little difficult to track down, but it was generally a breeze to operate. Scanning speeds were medium on initial runs but seemed to speed up considerably for the warm measures, while on-access overheads were perhaps a fraction higher than the average. CPU usage was fairly low, while RAM use was higher than many this month. Stability was decent, and testing completed in good time, with on-demand scans of the infected sets taking a while thanks to the in-depth heuristics being applied, but all completing within a day and a night. Final results were as splendid as ever, with solid scores across all sets and a particularly solid showing in the RAP sets. The clean sets turned up their usual handful of greyware alerts, which are doubtless quite accurate and mainly point out toolbars included with trial versions of popular apps. Nothing upset things in the WildList set, and ESET extends its unbroken run of VB100 success by yet another month.
