8. INFORMATION ON THE HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA Higher education in the Republic of Croatia is performed through university and professional studies. University studies Undergraduate university study programmes normally last for three to four years. Upon completion students accumulate 180-240 ECTS credits and are awarded an academic title of University Baccalaureus/Baccalaurea (sveučilišni prvostupnik/prvostupnica) with a reference to the field of study abbreviation is univ. bacc. with a reference to the field of study. Graduate university study programmes normally last for one to two years. Upon completion students accumulate 60-120 ECTS credits (a total number of credits accumulated at undergraduate and graduate study programmes is at least 300 ECTS credits) and are awarded an academic title of Master (magistar/magistra) with a reference to the field of study abbreviation is MSc. or MA. Postgraduate specialist study programmes normally last for one to two years. Upon completion students accumulate 60-120 ECTS credits and are awarded an academic title of University Specialist (sveučilišni specijalist) with a reference to the field of study abbreviation is univ. spec. with a reference to the field of study, which can be used together with the title received after completion of graduate study programmes. Postgraduate university study programmes normally last for three years. Professional studies Professional study programmes normally last for two to three years. Upon completion students accumulate 120-180 ECTS credits (exceptionally up to 240 ECTS credits). Upon completion of professional study lasting less than three years, students earn less than 180 ECTS credits are awarded a professional title of stručni pristupnik/pristupnica with a reference to the field of study (since this is a short cycle programme, there is no equivalent translation for this degree in the English language). Upon completion of professional study programmes lasting for at least three years, students accumulate at least 180 or more ECTS credits and are awarded a professional title of Professional Baccalaureus/Baccalaurea (stručni prvostupnik/prvostupnica) with a reference to the field of study abbreviation is bacc. with a reference to the field of study. Specialist graduate professional study programmes normally last for one to two years. Upon completion students accumulate 60-120 ECTS credits and are awarded a professional title of Professional Specialist with a reference to the field of study abbreviation is spec. with a reference to the field of study, which can be used together with the title received after completion of professional or undergraduate university study programme.
