Outcome 1: Student learning Students will demonstrate comprehensive skills in planning, creating, and debugging programs CIS 242 (): not taught over this period CIS 266 (over both years): B CIS 284 (Winter 2011): (A) CP AAS students will average a B- or better in advanced programming projects. Student project grades for most recent school year in CIS 242, 266, 284 On- going when stated courses are offered. Met criteria. Students in designated courses earned B- or better on projects demonstrating required skills. Faculty will evaluate the criteria and tool for this outcome in preparation for the next assessment cycle; at a minimum CIS242 will be dropped from the list since it is no longer offered (we moved from Visual Basic to C# as the predominant programming language, and no longer offer this class). The Outcome itself is important to continue monitoring. Outcome 2: Student learning Students will demonstrate the ability to apply database and programming concepts in different situations. CP majors will earn B- or better on course projects applying database and programming components. Student project grades in CIS 242, 245, 266, & 284. On- going when stated courses are offered. CIS 242 (): not taught over this period (see #3 below). CIS 245 (over both years): B- CIS 266 (over both years): average grade on project: B CIS 284 (Winter 2011): A

Met criteria. Students in designated courses earned B- or better on projects demonstrating required skills. Faculty will evaluate this measurement tool for the next assessment cycle, expecting to keep the outcome as part of computer programming assessment. Programming students didn t perform as well in CIS245 projects as database management students; we should consider looking further into this difference and determine if it is due to size (fewer database management students) or if there is a difference in skills. See comment above regarding CIS242. Outcome 3: Program level Employers of computer programming students will be satisfied with the performance of graduates. Employer survey responses will be satisfied or higher. CIS advisory committee will be satisfied with computer programming curriculum Employer Satisfaction Survey Review of curriculum by CIS advisory committee Survey sent out approximately 12 weeks after student enters work in computer programming. annually Employer satisfaction survey not conducted during this period due to students failure to provide employer contact information to SPSCC. Curriculum was reviewed each Fall Quarter with the CIS Advisory Committee subgroup working on computer programming/database management. Based on the Committee s review and input, we moved from Visual Basic to C# for most programming classes. We will continue to review our curriculum and industry trends with the CIS Advisory Committee to make adjustments to courses and the overall program. Using focused subgroups has helped concentrate interest and feedback. Conducting employer surveys is a function beyond the computer programming program; whether this continues as part of our assessment will be discussed as we prepare our next plan. An alternative that has been suggested in using employer feedback from co-op and internship positions, which we will consider.

Outcome 4: Think logically and critically Students will demonstrate ability to think logically and critically. Students will improve scores 1 point from CIS-168 to CIS-282. CIS168: Outcome B: 2.0; Outcome E: 1.7 CIS282: Outcome A: 3.3; Outcome D: 3.863636364 (both results are for both programming and database management students) CIS-168 and CIS-282 will include activities to measure student performance in one or more Critical Thinking outcomes (Critical Thinking Global Rubric), as identified by the instructor. CIS-168 will be evaluated in 2010; CIS- 282 will be evaluated in 2011. Baseline for future comparison was established in 2007-2009 results below: CIS 282 (Fa 08): Outcomes A and D assessed. Outcome A 1 level 2, 3 level 3s, and 5 level 4s (avg 3.4). Outcome D 9 level 4s (avg 4). CIS 282 (Wi 09): Outcome A 3 level 3s and 5 level 4s (avg 3.6). Outcome D 1 level 1, 3 level 3s, and 4 level 4s (avg 3.25). CIS 168 (Fa 08): Outcomes B and D assessed. Outcome B avg 1.6. Outcome D avg 1.4 CIS 168 (Fa 08): Outcome B avg 1.8. Outcome D avg 1.9 CIS 168 (Wi 09): Outcome B avg 2.2. Outcome D avg 2.2 CIS 168 (Sp 09): Outcome B avg 2. Outcome D avg 2.0 also indicate that students further along in their course work show improved critical thinking skills (CIS-168 is typically taken in the first several quarters; CIS-282 is typically taken in the quarters just prior to completion/graduation). Met criteria. Scores improved from lower to advance class. In addition CIS 168 result of 2.0 for Outcome B on average matched baseline. CIS 282 results also match on average baseline values established back in 2007-2009 assessment.

Outcome 5: Communicate effectively Students will demonstrate ability to communicate clearly. A baseline communication rubric score will be established Computer programming students average scores: Outcome A: 3.7; Outcome B: 3.1 In CIS 210, Business Communication, the final writing assignment requires students to write in a clear, concise, and grammatically correct manner to convey the intended message. This will be scored using the college s global communication rubric. Instructor will collect information in fall 09 and spring 10 classes. Data will be analyzed in summer 10 with changes/improvements to instruction to be implemented beginning fall 10. Further data will be collected in fall 10 and spring 11 and compared to baseline data. Established baseline to compare to future performance. Will be an area evaluated for the coming reporting period. Outcome 6: Evaluate and process quantitative and symbolic data. Students will demonstrate ability to evaluate and process quantitative and symbolic data.
