Lab A: Deploying and Managing Software by Using Group Policy Answer Key Exercise 1 Assigning Software This Answer Key provides the detailed steps for completing Lab A: Deploying and Managing Software by Using Group Policy in Module 6, Deploying and Managing Software by Using Group Policy. In this exercise, you will prepare your domain controller to host software that you will install by using Group Policy. You will work on your assigned domain controller to create the GPOs necessary to support software installation.! Create a GPO to assign the Cosmo 1 software installation package to the Sales OU in your domain 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, right-click Group Policy Management, and then click Run as. 3. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type 4. In Group Policy Management, expand Forest, expand Domains, expand YourDomain, and expand and then click Group Policy Objects. 5. Right-click Group Policy Objects, click New, type Lab Software Deployment and then click OK. 6. Right-click Lab Software Deployment, and then click Edit. 7. In Group Policy Object Editor, under User Configuration, expand Software Settings, and then click Software Installation. 8. Right-click Software Installation, point to New, and then click Package. 9. In the Open dialog box, browse to \\London\Labfiles\Lab6\COSMO1, click COSMO1.MSI, and then click Open. 10. In the Deploy Software dialog box, click Assigned, and then click OK. 11. Close Group Policy Object Editor. 12. In Group Policy Management, right-click HR in YourDomain in the ComputerName organizational unit, click Link an Existing GPO, click Lab Software Deployment, and then click OK.

You will log on as a test user and verify whether the software assigned in the previous exercise is installed.! Log off and then log on as brendadia from your domain 1. Log off and then log on as brendadia with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Click Start, and then point to All Programs. Does the Cosmo application appear on the All Programs menu? Why or why not? Yes. This package was assigned to users in the domain and has been enforced upon log on.! Open the software package from the All Programs menu 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Cosmo, and then click Cosmo v 1.0. What happens when you try to open the software package? Windows Installer proceeds to install the application. 2. Log off.

Now that you have successfully deployed software by assigning a package to users, you are ready to evaluate the publishing option by using the same package. You must remove the package before you can create a package to publish the application.! Remove the Cosmo 1 application 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, right-click Group Policy Management, and then click Run as. 3. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type 4. In Group Policy Management, expand Forest, expand Domains, expand YourDomain, and expand and then click Group Policy Objects. 5. Right-click Lab Software Deployment, and then click Edit. 6. In Group Policy Object Editor, under User Configuration, expand Software Settings, and then click Software Installation. 7. In the details pane, right-click Cosmo 1, point to All Tasks, and then click Remove. 8. In the Remove Software dialog box, click OK. 9. Log off and then log on as brendadia to verify the software was removed. 10. Log off.

You will publish software to better understand the differences between publishing and assigning software.! Open the Group Policy Management console 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, right-click Group Policy Management, and then click Run as. 3. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type. Task 3! Browse to your software deployment policy and edit the policy 1. In Group Policy Management, expand Forest, expand Domains, expand YourDomain, and expand and then click Group Policy Objects. 2. Right-click Lab Software Deployment, and then click Edit.! Create a software installation package to publish the Cosmo1 package 1. In Group Policy Object Editor, under User Configuration, expand Software Settings, and then click Software Installation. 2. Right-click Software Installation, point to New, and then click Package. 3. In the Open dialog box, browse to \\London\Labfiles\Lab6\COSMO1, click COSMO1.MSI, and then click Open. 4. In the Deploy Software dialog box, click Published, and then click OK. 5. Close Group Policy Object Editor. 6. Click Start, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as. 7. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type 8. At the command prompt, type gpupdate 9. Close the command prompt. 10. Log off.

You will log on as a test user and verify the software publishing settings in Exercise 4.! Log on as brendadia from your domain Log on as brendadia from your domain. Task 3 Task 4! Install the published software 1. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs. 2. Click Cosmo 1, and then click Add. 3. Close Add or Remove Programs 4. Close Control Panel.! Verify that the published software has been installed 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Cosmo, and then click Cosmo v 1.0. 2. Log off after verifying that the application has been installed.! Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser. 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser. 2. Click Start, and then point to All Programs. Is the application installed for this user? Why or why not? The application is not installed for this user because it was installed only for Brenda Diaz. 3. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs. Is the Cosmo 1 application listed in Add or Remove Programs? Why or why not? The Cosmo application is not published to this user because the GPO that publishes the application did not apply to the user.

Lab A: Deploying and Managing Software by Using Group Policy Answer Key 7 Exercise 6 Upgrading Deployed Software In this exercise, you will upgrade the software that you deployed by editing Group Policy.! Upgrade the Cosmo 1 application 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, right-click Group Policy Management, and then click Run as. 3. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type. 4. In Group Policy Management, expand Forest, expand Domains, expand YourDomain, and expand and then click Group Policy Objects. 5. Right-click Lab Software Deployment, and then click Edit. 6. In the Group Policy Object Editor, under User Configuration, expand Software Settings, and then click Software Installation. 7. Right-click Software Installation, point to New, and then click Package. 8. In the Open dialog box, browse to \\London\Labfiles\Lab6\COSMO2, click COSMO2.MSI, and then click Open. 9. In the Deploy Software dialog box, click Advanced, and then click OK. 10. In the Cosmo 2 Properties dialog box, on the Upgrades tab, click Add. 11. In the Add Upgrade Package dialog box, ensure that Cosmo 1 is selected, click Uninstall the existing package, then install the upgrade package, and then click OK. 12. In the Cosmo 2 Properties dialog box, click OK. 13. Close Group Policy Object Editor. 14. Log off.! Verify the upgrade of Cosmo 1 1. Log on as brendadia from your domain. 2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs. 3. Click Cosmo 2, and then click Add. 4. Close Add or Remove Programs 5. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Cosmo, and then click Cosmo v 2.0. 6. Log off.
