JCB is a pioneer in the credit card business in Japan. It was founded in 1961 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. Being an established and the oldest Japanese credit card company, it has entered into a new phase of global expansion. The long-time challenges with internet latency and low availability that previously impacted their web content delivery to China have been overcome by leveraging KDDI Global "Content Acceleration" and China Acceleration services - powered by CDNetworks. The Challenge: Last summer, I was notified about the sudden termination of services by our local ISP in China. In addressing this and to prevent such incidents from happening in future, we have decided to relocate our web server to Japan. But there were concerns regarding the delivery of our online services to China such as internet latency and low availability. And above all, the most important point was the stability of content delivery. In this regard, leveraging the services of CDNetworks, a subsidiary of KDDI whose global infrastructure network includes China, is considered a risk-hedging solution for JCB, said Yuji Yamada. It was necessary to select an alternative vendor due to the termination service from the local ISP, who d been responsible for the web server operation/ maintenance of the JCB website in China. In the case where the web server to Japan relocated, there was concern of internet latency and low availability upon website browsing from China. JCB had to search for a comprehensive service provider to meet the changing regulation and policy in China, and to obtain the right internet content license in China. The Solution: Entrusted to KDDI, CDNetworks has its own infrastructure in China Expanded delivery platforms in more than 26 areas in mainland China, and adopted KDDI's CDN service that operates a network of 55 Gbps. High-speed website was achieved due to the CDN service usage Leveraging edge servers that are distributed in China has helped optimise the communication protocol to achieve high-speed and stable content delivery. Prompt resolution of issues with a holistic support system by the KDDI group. Total support is provided such as acquisition of an ICP license, test operations and provision of a monitoring system. Rapid server relocation and stable operation of the server also became possible. Rapid & Secure Content Delivery From Japan through KDDI s CDN For over half a century, JCB has led the industry as a pioneer in the credit card business in Japan. The brand name JCB has a strong presence not only in Japan, but also across the globe. Asia is experiencing an increase in travel and overseas business trips of JCB card members, but it had been challenging to attend to - 2 -
the members overseas needs. Additionally there was demand to focus on the improvement of local services such as local card issuances and supporting the expansion of partner companies. JCB s business model in China takes the form of B2B businesses with the local financial institutions who would then onward offer JCB s services to their customers. As such, a robust site would be needed to serve the needs of these financial institution partners. "The sudden termination of our China web server infrastructure by the local ISP was a painful learning experience for us. We considered a policy change swiftly. There is a risk that a similar situation would occur if we work with another similar ISP in China. As such, we decided to set up our web server in Japan to serve the China market while still having the web speed and stability of content delivery as a key area of consideration. Having understood KDDI s setup in China and the support it can provide us, we decided that leveraging KDDI s CDN services on top of setting up our web server in Japan would be the best for us. said Mr. Yamada. High Speed Delivery Of Content Through Multiplexed Edge Server & Optimising Protocol To address any gaps in providing our content from our Japan web server to China users, JCB adopted both KDDI s "Content Acceleration" for cache delivery and the "China Acceleration" service to enhance delivery speeds to China. Cacheable static content such as images and video are replicated in edge servers. 160+ edge servers are currently deployed around the world. This allows end-users to retrieve data from the nearest edge server to their location, thus eliminating the need tofetch data from the web server back in Japan. Non-cacheable dynamic and interactive content can also be accelerated. High speed performance is achieved by optimising the Internet middle mile. Acceleration of dynamic content in China is also achieved through the China Acceleration service. Adopting this CDN solution reduced the load on JCB s origin server in Japan when accessed from China. This eliminated the need to scale the origin infrastructure, which allowed for cost savings, low latency and high data transfer speeds. We greatly appreciate the assistance by KDDI representatives in the ICP license registration. Besides, the representatives from KDDI are highly knowledgeable with the regulatory environment in China and are flexible with our requests. We were able to quickly and smoothly set our site functioning with their prompt assistance. YUJI YAMADA Deputy Director, JCB Co., Ltd - 3 -
Legal Procedures, Operational Requirements & Established Server Monitoring Structure The results of all tests demonstrated that there was no compromise in speed compared to other sites that were served directly from China. The registration for the ICP license is required for content delivery in China. This was assisted by KDDI s subsidiary who assisted with the registration for JCB within a short timeframe.
