Transfer Scholarship Information Scholarship assistance for transfer graduates is available at many four-year colleges and universities. Over the years, Monroe Community College graduates have received academic scholarships in excess of a half-million dollars. The awards usually provide for partial tuition assistance, although full tuition scholarships may also be granted. While documented financial need frequently is a criterion for maximum awards, early contact with the transfer college is most important. This guide provides a partial listing of the four-year colleges offering transfer scholarships. For additional information regarding these awards and other transfer scholarship options, contact the specific four-year college Financial Aid or Admissions Office. Financial Need: Various merit-based, need-based, and combined merit and need-based scholarships are available at four-year colleges. In most instances, an applicant is required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is accessible at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Deadline Dates Deadline dates for scholarship consideration may vary. Early inquiry and application to the four-year college are recommended. NYSTAA is the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association, a consortium of 600 advisors and others involved in the transfer process at more than 100 colleges and universities within and outside the state. NYSTAA provides students graduating with associate s degrees from member 2-year schools, such as Monroe Community College, and transferring to member 4-year institutions with the opportunity to obtain financial help through the NYSTAA scholarship. Scholarships and grants often require letters of recommendation, transcripts, essays, etc. This may mean getting to know your professors for those letters of recommendations and/ or require you to prepare by writing a few goal-oriented essays in advance. Pay special attention to deadlines. Applying for scholarships and grants does not cost you anything beyond your time and the cost of postage. If you are seeking financial assistance to complete your education you should apply to as many scholarships and grants as you can without impacting the quality of your applications. ALFRED UNIVERSITY Alfred, NY 14802 (607) 871-2115 www.alfred.edu The Transfer Presidential Scholarship and the Dean s Transfer Scholarship are awards that range from $5,000 - $13,000 per year. Eligibility is based on a minimum GPA of 3.0. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships are also available and range from $8,500 to $13,000. This award is for members only and is renewable for a maximum of four semesters provided the scholar maintains full-time enrollment and a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The Jonathan Allen Award for Leadership acknowledges students who have demonstrated leadership and made significant contributions through volunteer work. Generally candidates for admission with a 2.7 or better cumulative GPA are considered. International Student Scholarships are also CANISIUS COLLEGE Buffalo, NY 14208 (800) 843-1517 www.canisius.edu Students may qualify for the Canisius College Transfer Scholarship (open to all transfers, 3.0 GPA or higher, $2,000 - $10,000) or the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship (members only, 3.0 GPA, $2,000). No separate applications are necessary. All students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA and Canisius College Aid Application to be considered for need-based aid. CAZENOVIA COLLEGE Cazenovia, NY 13035 (800) 654-3210 www.cazcollege.edu Students transferring to Cazenovia College may qualify for one of the following scholarships: Presidential Transfer Scholarship Students with an Associate degree, graduating with honors and planning to live on campus will be awarded up to 65% of tuition renewable for a second year. Transfer Honors Scholarship - $5,000 for members of Phi Theta Kappa and is renewable if a 3.5 or higher GPA is maintained. Associate Degree Scholarship - $3,000 for students graduating with an associate degree who have a minimum of a 2.5 cum GPA. Merit-based awards require the maintenance of a 3.25 GPA. Phi Theta Kappa/Alpha Beta Gamma scholarships are awarded to members of these organizations. Clarkson also offers two special scholarships to transfer students: the Transfer Leadership Award and the Transfer Achievement Award ($11,000 per year and $9,000 per year respectively). Transfer students are eligible for the President s Scholarship ($6,000 $7,000/year, renewable upon maintaining a 3.0 GPA), Dean s Scholarship ($4,500/year, renewable upon maintaining a 3.0 GPA), and the Alumni Grant ($2,500 $3,000/year, renewable upon maintaining a 2.0 GPA). All awards are renewable and not based on financial need. Transfer Achievement Scholarships are available for students with a 2.75 GPA or higher, in the amounts of $1,000 - $5,000. The awards are $1250 per semester for four consecutive semesters as long as the student attends full-time and maintains good academic standing. HOBART & WILLIAM SMITH COLLEGES Geneva, NY 14456 (800) 852-2256 www.hws.edu The Phi Theta Kappa Trustee Scholarship for Academic Excellence for Graduates of Two-Year Colleges is the only merit based scholarship available for transfer students. Criteria for eligibility requires completion (or near completion) of a two-year degree from a community or junior college. A separate application and an interview are required by April 1st. Awards range from $5,000 to $20,000 annually. HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY Hempstead, NY 11549 (516) 463-6700 www.hofstra.edu Hofstra University evaluates all students for scholarships after an admission decision is reached. Awards range up to $10,000 per year with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify and 12 college credits after H.S. In addition we offer a competitive Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 per year. To qualify, students must have earned at least 58 credits and a 3.5 GPA. A letter of recommendation must be submitted to the Associate Director of Financial Aid by May 1st to qualify. The PTK Scholarship is awarded on a limited basis. HOUGHTON COLLEGE Houghton, NY 14744 (800) 777-2556 www.houghton.edu Academic Excellence Scholarships range from $1,250 to $7,500 per year and are awarded to transfers based on GPA (minimum 3.25 GPA). Transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa will receive a Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship of $2,000 per year. Awards are determined at the time of acceptance to the college. They will remain the same for all four years provided the student maintains the agreed upon GPA and files a FAFSA annually by APRIL 15th. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships are guaranteed for members in good standing; Letter from Phi Theta Kappa Advisor indicating member is in good standing must be included with admissions application. ITHACA COLLEGE Ithaca, NY 14850 (800) 429-4274 www.ithaca.edu Merit-based scholarships for students with superior academic performance are offered for each of the College s five schools. The annual amounts of these awards range from $6,000 to $9,000. These scholarships may be renewed annually for the duration of the student s undergraduate study as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, and satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree. Phi Theta Kappa members who possess a cumulative college GPA of 3.50 or greater will minimally qualify for one of the school specific scholarships. Scholarships are also available for International Students. KEUKA COLLEGE Keuka Park, NY 14478 (800)-33-Keuka www.keuka.edu Keuka College offers the Keuka Transfer Scholarship (amounts vary). Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and remain in full-time status to continue to receive the full amount of the scholarship. The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is an academic scholarship for traditional undergraduate students valued at $2,000 per academic year. This scholarship is renewable if the student remains in good academic standing and maintains full-time status. Applicants must be a current member of Phi Theta Kappa and provide proof of membership at the time of application. LE MOYNE COLLEGE Syracuse, NY 13214 (800) 333-4733 www.lemoyne.edu Le Moyne College offers the Transfer Merit Scholarships for entering students (award amount based on GPA from Two-Year College). To be eligible, prospective recipients must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours and plan to attend Le Moyne College as a full-time student. Scholarships are renewable based upon the recipient maintaining good academic and social standing at Le Moyne. Members of Phi Theta Kappa may also be eligible for our PTK Scholarship. Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA and the supplemental Le Moyne College Transfer Financial Aid Application for additional financial aid opportunities. Merit-based scholarships are also available for international students. LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY, C.W. POST CAMPUS Brookville, NY 11548 (800) 548-7526 www.cwpost.liu.edu/transfer The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University offers enhanced scholarships for transfer students. Students transferring to C.W. Post with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better and at least 24 credits are eligible for scholarships ranging from $3,000-14,000. NAZARETH COLLEGE Rochester, NY 14618 (585) 389-2860 www.naz.edu Merit based transfer scholarships are based on an exceptionally strong academic record. Need is not a factor for consideration. Recipients are selected at the time of admission by the Admissions Committee. No separate application is necessary. Scholarships available for transfer students include: Nazareth Transfer Scholarship ($1,000 - $9,000, minimum 3.5 GPA for consideration); Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship ($2,000, proof of membership required at time of application); Veterans Scholarship ($7,500/year, full-time study, active duty for a minimum of six months post September 11, 2001); Art, Music, & Theatre Scholarships based on performance ($1,000 - $5,000, must meet published portfolio & audition dates by department); Campus Diversity Scholarship ($1,000 - $3,000). Scholarships are renewable depending on the number of credits transferred to Nazareth and are awarded at time of admission. A minimum GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. File FAFSA and Nazareth College Financial Aid Form before March 15 to request additional need-based assistance. International Student Scholarships are also NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Old Westbury, NY Manhattan, NY (800) 345-NYIT www.nyit.edu New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) offers transfer scholarships in the amounts of $4,000 to $8,000. These scholarships are granted to qualified incoming students who have earned either a minimum of 24 credits from an accredited college or an associate s degree. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 from all previously attended institutions to be considered for scholarships. NIAGARA UNIVERSITY Niagara University, NY 14109 (800) 462-2111 www.niagara.edu Entering transfer students at Niagara University who have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours from an accredited college with a GPA overall of 2.5 or above are eligible for transfer scholarships ranging in amounts from $5,000 to $8,500 per year. Niagara University transfer scholarships are renewable for up to three years; students must maintain a 2.75 average at NU. NU also offers Phi Theta Kappa Awards of $1,000 per year. Students are required to forward a letter from their PTK advisor stating that they are a member in good standing. Athletic, community-service and ROTC scholarships are offered. The Transfer Recognition Scholarship is for students with a 2.0 2.9 GPA and is valued at $4,000. For students with a GPA above 3.0 the Transfer Excellence Scholarship valued at $5,000 is Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters so long as the student is enrolled full time at PSC and maintains the required cumulative GPA (Transfer Excellence Scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA; Transfer Recognition Scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA). ROBERTS WESLEYAN COLLEGE Rochester, NY 14624 (585) 594-6400 www.roberts.edu Roberts Wesleyan College offers transfer scholarships based on students cumulative grade point average. Presidential Scholarship ($8,000/ year): Cumulative GPA of 3.60-4.0 at most recent college attended full-time. The scholarship is renewed annually, provided the student maintains a least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Dean s Scholarship ($6,000/year): Cumulative GPA of 3.30-3.59 at most recent college attended full-time. The scholarship is renewed annually, provided the student maintains a least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. Phi Theta Kappa membership entitles a new student to one of these scholarships. Other grants and scholarships are available for transfer students in certain majors, programs, and those meeting specific criteria or for students with financial need. ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Rochester, NY 14623 (585) 475-6631 www.rit.edu The Undergraduate Admissions Office and the Scholarship Selection Committee will automatically review your admission application for merit-based scholarship programs. If eligible, you will receive a notification letter from the Scholarship Selection Committee. RIT Trustee Scholarships for Transfer Students: Awarded to transfer applicants with a GPA of 3.3 or higher (computed by RIT) who will complete an associate s degree before entering RIT. Awards are $9,000 per year with transfer GPA of 3.6 or higher; $6,000-$7,500 per year with GPA of 3.3 to 3.59 (Renewable). Achievement Scholarships for Transfer Students: Transfer applicants with 3.3 or higher transfer GPA (computed by RIT) and 30 semester or 45 quarter hours completed at previous institution will qualify for $6,000 per academic year (Renewable). Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships for Transfer Students: Awarded to transfer students with an associate degree elected to Phi Theta Kappa honor society. $2,000 per year. May be combined with a Trustee Scholarship or Achievement Scholarship. For Trustee or Achievement Scholarship consideration applicant must submit all required admission application documents by April 1 for summer/fall entry; October 1 for winter entry; January 15 for spring entry. Transfer Excellence Awards of up to $9,000 per year are renewable for up to three years provided the student remains in good academic standing. The Phi Theta Kappa Award of up to $12,000 is available to all Phi Theta Kappa members who enroll at RSC. All student applicants are considered when reviewed for admission to the college. Transfer Excellence Scholarship: Consideration to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (Up to $5,000 per year). Phi Theta Kappa Award: Consideration is given to full-time transfer applicants who are members of Phi Theta Kappa and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (Up to $7,000 per year). Additional awards may be available in combination with the transfer specific scholarships. International Student Scholarships are also ST. The Transfer Achievement Scholarship amounts range from a minimum of $4,000 to $7,500 per year. Transfer Achievement Scholarships are awarded to full-time students in the following amounts: Minimum cumulative GPA 3.5 - $7500 per year Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 - $6000 per year Minimum cumulative GPA 2.75 - $4000 per year Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships are awarded to full time students who are participating members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The scholarship is $2,500 per year. To be considered for these scholarships, you simply need to apply for transfer admission and submit your official college transcripts. SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY Syracuse, NY 13244 (315) 443-1870 www.syracuse.edu Syracuse University offers need-based scholarships and grants up to full tuition. An unlimited number of Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships are available in the amount of $2,000 to qualified students, regardless of financial need. Syracuse University also awards merit scholarships to entering transfer students in the form of Chancellor s Scholarships ($8,000 each) and Dean s Scholarships ($6,000 each). These are awarded regardless of financial need and are renewable each year. UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER Rochester, NY 14627 (585) 275-3221 www.rochester.edu All transfer students are given consideration for a merit scholarship when they apply. Merit scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and potential, regardless of financial circumstances. Transfer scholarships generally range from $3,000 to $10,000 per year. Phi Theta Kappa honor society members are awarded at least $5,000 per year. Beginning in fall 2009, all qualified veterans of the United States Armed Forces admitted to the University will receive the Rochester Pledge. This scholarship, in combination with the G.I. Bill and any other federal or state aid awarded, will cover full tuition for veterans with at least 36 months of service who are pursuing their first bachelor s degree. For veterans with less than 36 months of service, the scholarship amount will be pro-rated based on length of service. To be considered for the Rochester Pledge, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you are seeking additional financial assistance (e.g. for room and board), please also be sure to complete the CSS PROFILE. SUNY Canton also awards Fund for Excellence Scholarships. These scholarships range from $500 to $5000. Many of the scholarships are renewable after one year, granted that the student maintains the required grade point average. Some scholarships have a financial need component, submission of the FAFSA form is required. Scholarships are offered only to fall transfer students who have received an Associate s Degree from an accredited two year college. For consideration, student should have a 3.5 cumulative average. Students must live in the college residence halls. Students must maintain an overall cumulative 3.25 GPA to retain the scholarship for the second year and maintain the college residency requirement. Transfer students are eligible for additional scholarships such as the Fredonia Award for Excellence, out-ofstate student awards, and minority scholarships. The scholarships include a $500 Transfer Merit Scholarship and a $500 Transfer Housing Grant, the latter of which is available to students intending to live on campus who have met the above criteria. There is no formal application process at Purchase College for institutional scholarships. Scholarship criteria vary for students in the Liberal Arts and Sciences and students in the Visual and Performing Arts. The Directors of the Visual and Performing Arts programs award scholarships to students in their respective programs. While some scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit only, others require documentation of financial need as well.
