Admission to the PhD Programs in Business Studies and Management & Economics at the University of Zurich All applications are reviewed by the Admission Committee, composed of professors from the University of Zurich. The selection among all candidates is based on the submitted application documents. 2. General Grading Rules 1. Grades are based on the Zurich University scale: Grade Interpretation Doctoral Grade 5.5 thru 6.0 excellent summa cum laude 5.0 thru less than 5.5 very good magna cum laude 4.5 thru less than 5.0 good cum laude 4.0 thru less than 4.5 satisfactory rite less than 4.0 fail 2. This grading scheme will be adopted for Master (Only Track C) all Doctoral, Doctoral and Seminars Research Proposal (= Master Thesis for Track C) Doctoral Thesis Thesis Defence 3. Candidates who failed to pass a module may take one retest. Passed modules may not be retested. Fast Track Master Level Phase of Track C For successful completion of the Fast Track students are required to complete 60 credit points in master courses and write their master thesis (30 credit points) which also serves as a research proposal for their dissertation. Each student will be asked to present the proposal (15 minutes). The submitted proposal has to be pre-approved by a core faculty member who agrees to supervise the dissertation. Proposals without a pre-approval are rejected if they are not permitted in advance by the Ph.D. program director. The proposal should: 1. make clear which research question the student would like to work on, 2. indicate the relevance of this research for the respective research field and 3. include a brief overview of topic, a brief literature review (references), the student s own contribution, motivation for it time schedule and a title page containing the name of the supervisor and signature.

Financial Support Please refer to the GSB home page at http:///financing.html. 7. Doctoral Thesis and Thesis Defence Doctoral Thesis In order to begin with their thesis students need to: successfully complete all core courses, which includes the research proposal and find a doctoral supervisorr (referee) The doctoral thesis can be either a monograph or a collection of published or publishable papers plus a background paper which summarizes the results and contributions of the individual papers (cumulative doctoral thesis) Doctoral students who present a cumulative doctoral thesis may work with co-authors. However, either the referee or the co-referee mustn t be co-author in any of the submitted papers. The referees will finish their report within three months. The grade for the written thesis is the average grade given by the two referees. Thesis Defence The defence, where the referee and co-referee are present, is public and consists of two parts: presentation of the thesis (about 30 min) discussion on thesis subject (about 30 min)
