Name Period Blood Lab Packet part I Lab Partner Names I understand that I am working as a group but I am to answer all of the questions. I should not copy someone else s answers. Collaboratively working in a group to discuss the answers is allowed but copying someone s answers is not allowed. Therefore, my answers should not match any one else s work, word for word. I understand that if all of my answers are word for word as someone else s, I will receive a 0 for my lab packet. My understanding is demonstrated by my signature. I understand that this packet is due on the date that is due. If it is late, I will receive 50% off the first day it is late and no credit after the first day of being late. I need to make up any labs during class time or before school in case of an absence and all make up labs must be completed by the due date. My understanding is demonstrated by my signature.

Blood Presumptive test Hemastix Instructions 1. Place a small amount of water on the Hemastix. Rub the stick on the sample. Sample Observation Positive or Negative for Presence of blood A B C A positive result indicates the protein,, was detected in the sample. Luminal Instructions 1. Spray the materials with Luminal. Go into the dark room and observe. Sample Observation Positive or Negative for the Presence of blood 1 2 A positive result indicates the protein,, was detected in the sample. This protein reacts with the chemicals in the luminal to produce. Kastler-Meyer 1. Place two drops of water on the swab. 2. Rub the swab on the sample. 3. Apply two drops of alcohol on the swab. 4. Apply two drops of phenolphthalein solution on the swab. 5. Apply two drops of hydrogen peroxide on the swab. 6. The presence of a pink color indicates hemoglobin is detected.

Sample Observation Positive or Negative for Presence of blood D E F G A positive result indicates the protein,, was detected in the sample. Precipitin Test Instructions 1. Place a few drops of each blood sample in separate cells of each plate. Make sure you know which sample is in which cell. 2. Add a few drops of the serum in each cell. ABO Blood Typing A small pool of blood and a weapon was found near a garbage dumpster. After examining the area, the CSI on the scene discovered a body in the garbage dumpster and identified him as Earnest One-Eyed Earl. Earl had a wound to his chest that will be analyzed by the medical examiner. The CSI tested blood samples from the blood pool scene. It was determined that it was human blood, but he needs to know the blood type to help identify if it was from the victim or the person who murdered him. He has identified three suspects that either knew the victim or were seen in the area before the body was discovered. He would like to question them further while he waits for DNA test results. Determine the blood type of the three suspects and the victim, crime scene, and weapon. 1. The blood type from the weapon matches. 2. The pool of blood type from the dumpster matches.

3. Why is further testing needed on the blood to make a positive ID? Why can t blood typing be sufficient to make an arrest? Johnny Appleseed has been mugged, but he managed to slash the attacker with his paring knife. Fresh blood is collected at the scene. The police round up several suspects, but Appleseed cannot positively identify any of them. Blood samples from the crime scene and the suspects are delivered to you with the request for immediate typing because the police can t hold the suspects for very long. Appleseed s blood type has been taken from his blood donor card and is Type A-. Fill in the data table below: Suspect # Anti-A Anti-B Anti-Rh Blood Type Antibodies present in blood (A, B, Rh) Could contain more than 1 Crime Scene Suspect 1 Suspect 2 Suspect 3 Questions 1. According to your results, which suspects would you recommend the police investigate further? 2. Is blood typing individual or class evidence? 3. Which suspect(s) could receive a transfusion of type AB? 4. Which suspect(s) could receive a transfusion of type B? 5. Which suspect(s) could donate blood to anyone? 6. Which suspect(s) could receive blood from anyone?
