1 4.2 Facilitation Zone: Crime Scene This is the scene of the crime. Scotland Yard believes that this botanist went crazy and was found ranting about a worm and murdered his family. Overall Facilitation Zone Role: In this space volunteers will support guests in observing the crime scene as they study the evidence. Guests need to look closely at the crime scene. There is a lot going on! There are 4 pieces of evidence that guests will observe using in their Detective s Notebook. The Evidence: Blood Splatter: Small drops of blood >1/8 th inch, vertical oblong shapes, spread over wall and painting. Scotland Yard thinks: Suspect shot wife in chest at close range. Sherlock questions: What could cause this blood pattern? Record stain and go to slaughterhouse to test three possibilities (direct, pressure, moving). Seedpod: Suspect found burning seedpod in matchbox. Size: 1 5/8 long and 3/16 widest point. Suspect was heard ranting about a worm. Scotland Yard thinks: Suspect was using hallucinogenic plant that made him temporarily insane resulting in the murder of his wife and child. Sherlock questions: Is the seedpod poisonous? Record rubbing and match pod to conservatory samples. Go to the conservatory to find out of the pod is poisonous. Bullet Trajectory: Bullet hole in plaster above fireplace, 5 3 high, size indicates 22 caliber. Bust broken and on floor. Scotland yard thinks: Bullet went through bust on table to wall, so shot fired from waist 14

2 high of average sized person. Sherlock questions: Did a bullet break the bust? Is bust to wall the right bullet trajectory? Go to the Penny Arcade and investigate a bust broken in different ways. Marks in the Sand: Parallel marks in sand from crime scene to river Scotland yard thinks: Tracks made by dragging dead body of wife to river Sherlock questions: Do these marks match up to drag marks or could something else be going on? Go to river Thames and investigate drag marks vs. walking. Can a conclusion be reached? Questions to ask guests: (Provide context) What do we know about the case? What did Sherlock tell us? Share what we know (fill in case background from 221b Baker Street crime board if they missed it) - journalist, family missing, burned journals by fire, partly burned seedpod on desk, suspect ranting about worm, blood spatter and bullet hole on wall, shattered bust by table, bullet crease. Questions to promote observation: What do you think happened? Why do you think that? What do you notice about the blood splatter? What does the seedpod remind you of? Cue them to gather evidence at the Investigation stations. Have you gathered your evidence for XXX? (e.g., seedpod, blood spatter, bullet trajectory, and marks in the sand) Use the laminated Mind Map to communicate their job at each Investigation Station. 15

3 Facilitation: Investigation Stations There are four stations to test each piece of evidence from the crime scene. Slaughterhouse: Blood Splatter Conservatory: Seedpod Penny Arcade: Bullet Trajectory Thames: Marks in the Sand Overall Facilitation Zone Role: In this space volunteers will support guests as they test the evidence at each investigation station. Slaughterhouse: What caused the blood spatter? The Slaughterhouse recreates different ways in which blood can spray from a wound. Was the blood from a direct wound, wound under pressure or swinging bloody limb around) Most people get this right, though 2 spatters looked very similar. Questions to ask guests: What did you notice about the blood splatter at the crime scene? What blood spatter pattern best matches your record? What do you think happened? 16

4 Conservatory: Is the seedpod toxic? The conservatory explores the question of whether the seedpod from the crime scene is poisonous or not in two investigations. Part 1: Part 2: There are two parts to this investigation station. It can be done in either order. Seedpod matching is confusing as there are similar samples, NO it doesn t match any of the seeds. Investigate whether a poison was added to the seedpod. The Tests along outside of space show reaction of possible reagents (all have color change). The seed pod in the center is yours. Answer: Seedpod shows NO color change. Terminology: Reagent =a substance used to detect a reaction (testing for a poison) Questions to ask guests: What did you notice about the seedpod at the crime scene? What do you notice about Wisteria? How is it similar to the pod at the crime scene? How is it different? Did you find a match to the seedpod? Do you think someone was trying to poison someone else with the seedpod? 17

5 Penny Arcade: How was the bust broken? The Penny Arcade has three columns with statues in pieces and three old tyme movies that show the different ways that the bust could break. the statue puzzles are all the same the three movies are different the point is to look at the size and shape of the pieces and match them to the correct movie Questions to ask: How would you describe the bust pieces? Why would they break that way? What movie matches the evidence? What broke the bust apart? 18

6 Thames: How were the marks in the sand made? Thames contains two large devices to create footprints in sand to match to evidence. One lets you drag a body and the other is shoes making footprints. Sand doesn t hold impressions very well. Answer should be shoe prints. Questions to ask visitors: What did you notice about the marks at the crime scene? Is the evidence clear? What did you notice about the footprints at the crime scene? How do they compare? What do you think happened? 19

7 Results, Shed, and Reveal Results Summary: Marks in the sand: shoe prints Bloodstain: direct Bullet Trajectory: bust broken by blunt object, bullet trajectory from floor to wall (find also crease on table base to corroborate) Seedpod: not poisonous Shed and The Big Reveal: The 4 clues get you to next step in case which should reveal the words GO TO THE SHED Things are not always what they seem! Look closely at a garden shed that contains some unusual items, providing the final pieces of the puzzle before all is revealed. At the shed visitors find. Police badge, doll, travel bag, shoes, and bedding. 20
