Chapter 1: Lesson 4 READING - Cereals are plants which have a head of grains. - Roots and tubers grow under the ground. - Vegetables are plants we eat as food. - Fruits grow on trees and bushes. They have pips or seeds. - Animal foods are meat, sh, insects and birds, and things from animals (for example eggs and milk). - Beans, peas, groundnuts and bambara nuts are called legumes. They grow in pods. - Fats and oils are in many foods, but can be bought separately. - Sugars are also in many foods. They make food sweet. - Flavourings change the taste of food. LESSON 5 OUR MEALS Chapter 1: Lesson 5 How do we make meals? We usually have nshima. Nshima is our staple food. We add other foods to make the meal. Chapter 2: Lesson 2 READING All foods give energy. Some give more energy than others. We get a lot of our energy from - staple foods like maize, cassava, sorghum, millet - beans and cowpeas - sugars, fats and oils, for example, sugarcane, red palm oil, groundnuts and fatty meat. A little red palm oil has as much energy as a lot of nshima. Groundnuts have a lot of oil. They give a lot of energy. Activity 14 Kanyanta is eating a meal with only nshima. Chapter 5: Lesson 3 READING People with diarrhoea need to eat. They also need to drink a lot. They can drink soup, munkoyo, tea, boiled water and fruit drinks. You can also give a special drink made of sugar, salt and water. If the diarrhoea is very bad, or if there is blood, they should go to the clinic or see a doctor. It may be a dangerous disease. They may need medicine as well as food and drink. Activity 53 To make the special drink: - Take the tip of a teaspoon of salt. - Put it in a glass of boiled water. - Taste it.
