We have had our automation and control systems controlling the Southeast and Oceanside plants for going on twenty years now. Our Wonderware software is installed as part of their supervisory control and data acquisition or SCADA solution for their pumping stations. Much of this project will include expansion and upgrade of the treatment plants. We ll keep adding on and refreshing our systems to accommodate them. Mark Grant, the company s SCADA specialist, provides insight on the process, which can be traced back 10 years to the development of the company s ArchestrA System Platform technology. ArchestrA integrates software and hardware from multiple vendors and enables Invensys branded software applications to integrate with one another as well as with third-party applications. We saw that these systems were becoming
Invensys Operations Management Future of a Sustainable San Francisco page 15 commodities, and we realized that we needed to provide customers realtime information from their assets and translate it after it had been processed into pure information. Our open technology can push that information up from the plant floor and turn it into information to allow people to do maintenance, to look at small islands of energy use, to look at pollution and generate reports, says Grant, who has been with Invensys for more than 20 years. Then we started to create applications that bolted right onto ArchestrA and were native to that technology. When an application is created, our engineers don t have to do so many gyrations to make them fit because they already talk together natively, he adds. The applications can be modified and used to visualize and control processes across industries. In regards to the San Francisco Project, SCADA refers to geo-scada, a combination of applications that run on System Platform. Since electrical power used for pumping is one of a water/wastewater utility s largest costs, the ability to measure energy intensity for example the energy needed to pump a specific volume to a specific height and compare this from pump station to pump station over time enables the utility to identify where improvements and/or maintenance are needed. The company s Avantis Enterprise Asset Management application
Invensys Operations Management Future of a Sustainable San Francisco page 17 compiles information about the running time of a pump house to ensure appropriate maintenance is performed and asset breakdown prevented. The Invensys IntelaTrac mobile application lets plant floor and field workers track and report performance of every plant asset or device, an example of how System Platform allows Invensys solutions to be integrated and speak with non-invensys solutions, yielding information leading to real-time operational improvements. In 20 years, there have been no unplanned shutdowns in San Francisco. We ve used our consistently green model to keep their systems up to date. We have continuously current architecture that can refresh systems as needed. On top of that are our value-added applications. It s the best of both worlds as far as I m concerned, Lanini says. Invensys Operations Management s work on the San Francisco Project provides a window into how the company differentiates itself from competitors. Imagine you re responsible for running a city or a company. You re very good at planning and you re very good at reporting the results after the fact, but you often have few tools that allow you to control your operations. We are very good at helping

ADDITIONAL WATER PROJECTS Ontario Clean Water Agency: The Wonderware software historian eliminated data loss critical to compliance reporting. The scalable system accommodates wide-area installations and communications. Adding new systems costs less and can be accomplished in hours rather than days. Changes required for regulatory compliance are now tested and deployed in one day. SPOKANE WATER DEPARTMENT: Expanding SCADA system capacity increased capability for monitoring an upriver dam that generates more than 70 million kilowatts of electricity annually. Lost water
Invensys Operations Management Future of a Sustainable San Francisco page 21 rates measuring water wasted due to leaks, inaccurate metering or slow repairs have been reduced to six percent, among the lowest in the nation. Remote monitoring and control has cut frequency of travel to stations by about twothirds, saving on fuel. CITY OF TORONTO: Invensys helped close a maintenance productivity gap caused by the city spending most of their time in a reactive mode. Avantis maintenance costing and work history software enabled them to determine accurate costs of maintaining specific facilities quickly, review work history, and monitor all maintenance progress easily. A reduction in inventory management and procurement costs optimized inventory levels. ARIZONA GLOBAL WATER Management: Wonderware software helped to meet quality, efficiency and profitability goals and allowed engineers to track multiple points of input and hundreds of data points in real time. Wonderware Historian and InTouch HMI screen graphics organize this information and make it easily understandable. Data can be trended over long periods to create better decision-making input for management, providing the big picture necessary to fine tune and solve complex problems.
