Enterprise Data Historian for Water Operations - Part 2 San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Paul Karawanny, Project Manager
San Francisco s Data Historian Project Part 1: Installation & Development of new SFPUC enterprise Data Historian Infrastructure. Part 2: Deployment and enhancement of new edna infrastructure with enterprise user tools for viewing/reporting SCADA data to various stakeholders..
SFPUC serves the City & County of San Francisco Primary Services: 1. Distribution of drinking water to San Francisco retail customers (700,000 residents, businesses, and community organizations). 2. Distribution of drinking water to 26 wholesale customers (24 Bay Area cities & water districts + 2 private utilities). These entities provide drinking water to 1.7 million people, businesses and community organizations in Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. 3. Generation and distribution of hydroelectric power to San Francisco & other counties. 4. Wastewater collection, cleaning/treating, recycling, and disposal for San Francisco residents and 3 sanitary districts in San Mateo County.
The San Francisco Water System

Snowfall to Outfall 85% percent of the WATER comes from Sierra Nevada snowmelt stored in the Hetch Hetchy reservoir situated on the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park (1913 Raker Act). Hetch Hetchy water travels 160 miles via gravity from Yosemite to the San Francisco Bay Area. The regional water system (between Hetch Hetchy & San Francisco) consists of over 280 miles of pipelines, over 60 miles of tunnels, 11 reservoirs, 5 pump stations, and 3 potable water treatment plants. In San Francisco itself, there are 8 major pump stations and 2 wastewater treatment plants.
The SFPUC s SCADA & DCS systems The Water & Power operations use Wonderware for their Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA). These SCADA systems span over 100 PLC sites and 50,000 analog & discrete I/O points. The Sewer operational unit uses InFusion for its Distributed Control System (DCS).
Input/Output Historian Architecture The legacy Data Historian system consisted of independent servers. had to choose the server that contained their data.

EHiP Enterprise Historian implementation Project Benefits to users of SCADA data: Upgrade SFPUC historians from separate data archiving systems to a new centralized edna infrastructure. Improve reliability of data management & usage with redundancy. Provide new analytical and reporting edna Web tools for users. Improve View screens and their accessibility with a single hierarchy. Provide centralized interfaces to other systems for expanded functionality, e.g., WISKI water modeling & Asset management. Provide remote access to centralized edna for various stakeholders.
