Define the principal methods of environmental impact assessment TOPICS COVERED: Major Environmental Impacts and associated indicators Applied Ecology: Air pollution, climatic change, water pollution, soil pollution, loss of biodiversity, depletion of resources This knowledge is first addressed through scientific popularization which can be easily understood by all. Staying at the level of scientific popularization is justified since the concerned subjects are meant for a vast public who will need to understand the finer points of eco-design. Waste management household and industrial waste: the main sectors of waste management and their environmental impact. Every product will become waste at the end of its useful life, and how waste is managed weighs considerably on the overall environmental impact of a product. Different methods of dealing with products at the end of their useful life must be compared, keeping in mind each method s environmental impact Environmental impact indicators Overall environmental impact is difficult to assess, the indicators that are used need to be fully understood, from both their advantages as well as their limitations Life Cycle Assessment: Evaluation of environmental impacts of products Life Cycle Assessment is the reference method to establish or contribute to an ecodesign approach. The course presents this method, its tools, and case studies.
The principle: multi-step and multi-criteria analysis. The presentation of LCA principles explains the complexity of the method, which takes into consideration environmental multi-criteria as well as the life cycle phases, from the extraction of raw material to the end of life/waste steps. The following steps comprise a life cycle impact assessment: selection of impact categories, classification, characterization, (normalization, grouping, weighting) and impact measurement. LCA methodology according to ISO 14040 consists of the following phases: definition of goal and scope, interpretation, inventory analysis, and impact assessment Other Environmental Impact evaluation methods Other methods are used to evaluate the environmental impact of a product, sometimes the logic is less comprehensive (carbon footprint, focused on impact), or more general (ecological footprint). Many macroeconomic insights have been deepened since Goldman Sachs Jim o Neill coined the concept in 2002. Nevertheless, the knowledge in terms of business models of worldwide BRIC companies is almost tantamount to zero. However, their performance are exceptionally high because these companies have increased their participation from 0 to 10% of the Forbes 2000 index in the last seven years and 50% of the worldwide growth between 2000 and 2008 comes from these 4 countries. Since the financial crisis, the figure in 2012 has increased to 65%... Even if a few names can be familiar to you such as Lenovo and TCL for China, Infosys and Tata for India, Gazprom and Rosneft for Russia and Petrobras and Vale in Brazil, these companies are widely unknown. In this course we will first analyze the macroeconomic changes that have enabled emerging countries to end up with the leadership of industrialized countries since the First Industrialized Revolution. Second, we will focus from a geopolitical point of view on the challenges bound to energies. They have to face changes which are wider in scope, faster in speed, harder to predict, and putting higher strains on all of their resources, especially the human ones. Therefore, leading in a changing environment lies at the heart of competitive performance. The successful leaders of tomorrow will need to develop their own ability to work in this turbulent environment. Based on a solid set of concepts and a highly developed understanding of effective leadership, they will need to be able to inspire, guide and sustain their people.
