Supporting Education and Training in the field of Satellite Navigation in Europe Gabriella Povero Istituto Superiore Mario Boella
The NavSAS The NavSAS research group is a joint team between Istituto Superiore Mario Boella and Politecnico di Torino Background on Telecommunications Engineering Focus on advanced technologies for positioning systems and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers and applications Three research units
Motivations The development of the Galileo system and more in general the increased interest towards satellite navigation highlighted that in Europe there is a lack of expertise in this field. Multi-disciplinary Expertise from the basic technologies to the capability to push the market European Commission decided to foster and support education initiatives in the field of Satellite Navigation
The G TRAIN Project G-TRAIN has received funding from the European Community's Framework Programme FP7 2007-2013 Partners: Politecnico di Torino (Coord.) Italy ENAC France UniBwM Germany ISMB Italy ISAE France
Main goals: The G TRAIN Project to support the creation of a generation of GNSS experts open to cross-border and international cooperation, trained by recognized European universities in this field to set up a long-term model for the coordination of universities, students exchanges and researchers co-operation
G TRAIN Activities Activities focus on the higher levels of education (enablers for research and innovation) Creation of a collaborative MSc in Global Navigation Satellite Systems Strengthening of a II level (post-graduate) Master in Navigation and Related Applications for professional education Support to Ph.Ds training and networking Creation of the Satellite Navigation University Network
Collaborative MSc Set up by ENAC and ISAE in Toulouse Other partners contribute with teaching activities Students enroll in France Receive a French degree Taught in English 3 semesters with lectures and labs 1 semester for internship in a company or research centre Defense of a final thesis report prepared during the internship period 7
Specializing Master on GNSS 3 rd level in the Bologna Process (after MSc) Organised by Politecnico di Torino and ISMB Taught in English 3 Quarters for lectures and labs G-TRAIN supports: Student mobility for internship period Teacher mobility: Creation of a new branch devoted to EGNOS and Aeronautical applications taught in collaboration with teachers from ENAC Seminars from European experts Creation of a new short course on GNSS business and market 1 Quarter for a Pilot Project 8
Support to PhD students PhDs in Europe in Sat Nav are less than in US or China. Doctoral work is playing an important role regarding knowledge creation, innovation and technology transfer. It contributes directly to the goals of the EU as mentioned in the Lisbon strategy to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world. PhD Training PhD Summit PhD Grants 9
PhD Training Support to PhD students 3 days of high level lectures 2 events organised during the project (in Munich and Toulouse) In Munich: 46 students applied for 25 places Very positive feedbacks from attendees (they declared they would pay a small fee if requested) 10
Support to PhD students PhD Summit To foster networking skills of young researchers To allow them to discuss own ideas and research results with other peers and academic advisors and experts on an international platform. 1 keynote lecture on topics such as how to improve scientific writing, the challenges of PhD thesis in navigation/gnss today, project management issues Discussion rounds in small groups (4-5 people) where every student presents his/her research work and discuss it with the other PhDs and academic experts. 11
PhD Grants Support to PhD students To foster PhDs participation to key conferences in Sat Nat Grants to attend the conference Call for applications Winners selected by representatives of the partners in the project 12
GNSS SUN Set up www.gnss-sun.eu Network of Universities and higher education providers in satellite navigation To propose new strategies for education in GNSS To promote GNSS education throughout Europe Working Group working on the legal framework to establish joint courses Web site is a show case for education initiatives on GNSS in Europe 13
G TRAIN Impact G-TRAIN is the very first attempt to create a coordinated environment in the field of Higher Education on Satellite Navigation in Europe. It started putting the basis for a long-term and Europe-wide education approach in the GNSS field Based on the cooperation of universities and on the students/researchers exchange It has develop a functional model lasting beyond the project s timeframe.
