1 Introduction Eaton is a first-class supplier of hardware and software optimizing business continuity on your Microsoft virtual platforms worldwide. The systems include controlling proper boot and graceful shutdown of: Virtual machines hosted on the same physical machine. The main operating system hosting Microsoft Hyper-V. NetWatch is Eaton s solution to automate various data security functions. NetWatch clients are able to shutdown a server or workstation under the control of a UPS. It: Continuously waits for information from the ConnectUPS Web/SNMP card or Network Management Card (NMC) connected to the Eaton UPS. Warns administrators and users if AC power fails. Proceeds to shutdown system before the end of battery backup power is reached. Automatic startup on power restore option is machine dependent. It will work when machine bios is set to support it. To do that, changes need to made in bios to start the computer when power is provided. Microsoft Hyper-V controls the Virtual Machine s shutdown and restart functions. Version 5 of Eaton s NetWatch can be installed on the main operating system (hosting Hyper-V). NetWatch will manage electrical redundancy, consolidating information from the UPSs that are supplying the server. Advantages of installing our protection software on the main operating system (hosting Hyper-V) include: Only one deployment of NetWatch v5 on a physical machine, to manage all virtual machines. Dynamic management of virtual machines configuration, with a personalized script. This manual will guide you through the installation and configuration process of NetWatch on the Microsoft Hyper-V platform. Eaton tested virtualization security in a UPS power supply backup configuration, for system shutdown, electrical shutdown and reboot. Eaton NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V installation guide Page 3/8
2 Installation Section 2 guides the user through the installation process of NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V architecture. Use of NetWatch v5 will allow continuity of the electrical power supply to the end-user s internal power system. 2.1 Prerequisites This procedure was validated using Microsoft Windows 2008 Enterprise x64 as the main operating system (hosting Hyper-V). The system had the following applications installed: - Microsoft Hyper-V (hosting virtual machines running Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Suse Enterprise Linux 10) - NetWatch v5 for Windows 2.1.1 Microsoft Hyper-V configuration For the automatic OS boot on startup: the user must configure the physical machine to allow automatic OS boot on startup. This is found in the machine s BIOS. For further information, see specific documentation of the physical hardware. Note: It may be required to activate Virtualization Technology Enabled (in the machine s BIOS) to run Hyper-: CPU Information -> Virtualization Technology -> Enabled To ensure an automatic boot of each virtual machine when Microsoft Hyper-V starts-up, use the following procedure: > From the Hyper-V manager: - Select the virtual Machine list, then the Virtual Machine - Select Parameters -> Manage -> Automatic Start Action - Choose the appropriate parameters for the virtual machine that coincide with the start rules of the specific application. This configuration is illustrated on the following screenshot: Eaton NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V installation guide Page 4/8
Follow this procedure to ensure an automatic graceful shutdown of each virtual machine when Microsoft Hyper-V stops: > From the Hyper-V manager: - select the virtual Machine list, then the Virtual Machine - select Parameters -> Management -> Automatic Stop Actions, - choose the appropriate parameters for the virtual machine, to fit with shutdown rules of the specific application, This configuration is illustrated on the following screenshot: 2.1.2 Eaton hardware architecture The UPS system s compatibility can be found at Eaton s Web site (http://www.powerware.com/software/downloads.asp) 2.1.3 Network architecture All hardware elements must have an operational network configuration that allows free dialog amongst each other. Connections through the following ports must be authorized within the firewall of the main operating system: For SNMP cards o Connections on UDP port 200, 2844 and 2844 to enable a remote access for supervision and configuration. For NMC Cards o Connections on UDP port 4679 and 4680 to enable a remote access for supervision and configuration. These ports are reserved at IANA (http://www.iana.org). To configure network parameters of the main operating system, please refer to its user manual. Eaton NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V installation guide Page 5/8
2.2 Installation Use the following procedure to install NetWatch v5: Download the latest version of NetWatch v5 Windows version package from Eaton s Web site http://www.powerware.com/software/downloads.asp Execute the package on the main operating system (i.e. Microsoft Windows 2008 Server). For more information, please refer to NetWatch v5 manual. The NetWatch v5 interface will look like: Select the load segment of the UPS to which the system is attached Select the Configuration Options tab Eaton NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V installation guide Page 6/8
Change the configuration option to shutdown and notification, and click on Apply to save the configuration. For more information about NetWatch configuration please refer to the NetWatch user document. Eaton NetWatch on Microsoft Hyper-V installation guide Page 7/8
