Using the Internet Outcome1 1.1 Identify different types of connection methods that can be used to access the internet When connecting to the Internet there are many different options available in this section I will look at what is available. The Following are all using a Physical cable connection and the lines are provided by a telephone company such as BT Dial Up Modem This can be internal or external to the PC and uses the public switched telephone network to establish a dial up connection to an internet service provider the maximum connection speed is 56k ISDN Integrated service for digital network and will simultaneously digital transmission using the public switched network again will use an ISDN modem to connect the ISP maximum connection speed of 128 Kbits ADSL/SDSL Asymmetric digital subscriber line is a communication used for connection to the internet using existing phone lines but allows for more data to be sent again the connection is down to an ISP using either a broadband router or USB Modem a micro filer is also required to be plugged into the phone lines supports speeds up to 9Mbps. Leased LINE Is a service contract between provider and end user where the provider delivers a line connecting two or more locations and is always active and provides speeds of up to 34.368 Mbits Wireless 3G/4G This is a connection using the Mobile Network the G stands for Generations and each generation the connection is a faster connection Manley used for mobile devices but can also be used with PC with using a router of USB dongle with the mobile Sim installed 4 g can achieve speeds of 100 megabits per second At moduleit we generally have cabled connections to all are workstations which then connect to a switch which gives us a shared internet connection using a Broadband router we also have some wireless points for visitors to use or for some laptops users this is done with a WAP (wireless access point) there a different wireless topologies 802.11 is a set of IEEE standards that governs wireless networking transmission methods 802.11a Maximum connections of 2Mbps 802.11b Supports connection speeds of up to 11Mbps 802.11g supports speeds of up 54Mbps and the equipment is backward compatible with b 802.11n supports speeds of up to 300Mbs and equipment will work with g but a slower speeds 1.2 Explain the benefits and drawbacks of different connection methods When looking at different types of internet connections available there are lo of thing that need to be considered these include costs, Availability of coverage how and why the internet connection is going to be used. Table showing different connection types of the most common and advantages and disadvantages of each type.
Type Common use Advantage Disadvantage 56k Dial UP Home use Single PC Cheap Low cost Cheap equipment work with any phone line ISDN Small Office Good connection Work with any line ADSL Lease Line Wireless 3g/4g Home Server network /Home network Server Networks to Home Fast Cheap to share connection Very fast Stable connection No loss of connection speed Fast Great for on the move Very slow Loss of connection Slow Not always available Line speeds can change Expensive Lots of equipment Not available everywhere Connection drops Usage costs 1.3 Analyse the issues affecting different groups of users When installing a new network we have to consider what will provide the best options for the type of users and equipment that will be used. A wired connection will always provide a faster and more reliable connection with the environment not having any effect on network performance but in some cases users and certain types of equipment my require a wireless connection A wireless connection can be effected buy types of walls and floors such as Brick, concrete and metal these will all reduce the signal. Other electrical equipment such as Bluetooth, microwaves and cordless telephones or thou this only occurs when all switched on and being used. Regular manufacture updates of wireless equipment most new routers will get these automatically. So when installing wireless equipment we have to be careful of where this will be placed to give us the best signal and with the least interference. When setting up a guess internet connection it may require you restrict access to certain times of the day or limit the content the can be displayed this can be done with certain routers or by using a proxy server. A proxy server is a computer that functions as an intermediary between the web browser and the internet as well as providing filtering web content and malicious software is also improve internet speeds by storing a local copy of frequently used webpages (cache). 1.4 Select and setup an internet Connection using an appropriate combination of hardware and software. In this following task I have setup and configure a New BT Router to a broadband line and will then configure he wireless settings and connect to it using my computer and a mobile phone. Step 1 the router is plugged into the telephone line and I have plugged a LAN cable from the router into the PC and have switched on the router. Sep2 Once the router has booted and all light have stopped flashing I can confirm what IP address the router is on buy going to a command prompt.
Screen showing the LAN settings on my computer because the router is by default set as a DHCP server it has given my computer the following IP configuration from this I can see that the Router has an address of 192.168.0.1. Step 3 in my internet browser I can connect to the router by typing in the address of the router in this case its 192.168.0.1. Typing in the IP address of the router will allow me to connect to it and make change on the router. Image1: Screen showing ipconfig/all results Image 2: Entre IP address of router into browser Step 4 with Router configuration screen will ask me to logon this is the username and password for the router this is currently held in the manual and should be changed for security reasons on I have finished. The router asks me for the username and password found on the router. Image 3: Router login screen Step 5 once I have logged into the router it will automatically detect the broadband line and then ask for the username and password once his is done it will show it s connected to the broadband line. Wireless setting configuration from here I have selected the type of wireless connection the name of the wireless connection and the security settings and assign a password for the wireless security.
Image 6: Wireless settings Step 7 With the Wireless network now configured I can now connect my wireless device to this connection. On windows PCI click on the wireless icon in bottom right hand corner it will display the following screen showing all available networks. In this case I want to connect to the FP-workshop which is the name I gave the wireless connection on the router. Image7 From this screen I entre the wireless security key I previously configured on the router. Image 8:screen to show entre the wireless key The screen showing I have connected to the wireless network of FP-Workshop And it has s broadband connection Image9
1.5 Recommend a connection method for Internet access to meet identified needs When evaluating a customer s internet requirements will greatly depend on how a when they will need to be connected. Single Office -Wired ADSL and some wireless points for guests and Laptop users Multi Office -Leased line guaranteed link and speed for better connection Mobile workers -3g/4g for email connections when out and about ADSL at home Each connection type can be set to monitor the amounts of traffic and especially with mobile data block usage over a certain amount. 1.6 Diagnose and solve Internet connection problems With company s relying on internet access for everyday tasks when thing go wrong there are things we can check before contacting the ISP. 1. Reboot the Router. 2. Can connect to the Admin screen of the router Via IP address. 3. Can I Ping the Routers IP address. 4. Is the Router sending out DHCP address to the computer. Connect to the Router with web browser. Ping the router check if the computer gets the correct response. Image9: connect to the Rooters IP address. Ipconfig displays IP address information to check the LAN is getting correct information from router. Image10: ping routers IP address Image11: Ipconfig router results
