Scholars Profiles Jacob Tan Jianzuo As Singapore evolves into a knowledge-based economy, the competition for people and talent become even fiercer. The role of HR has been redefined as the core of corporate strategy. The National HR Scholarship allows me to participate in this revolution and make a difference to the local HR landscape. It is both an honour and a challenge that I am keenly looking forward to. ~ Mr Jacob Tan Jianzuo, NUS, matched to Aon Hewitt Jacob is a final year undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) at the National University of Singapore, specialising in Management and Finance. He was in the Dean s List and awarded the Gordon Johnson Book Prize for being the most outstanding student in Accounting. Jacob has participated in various enrichment programmes such as the exchange programme at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration and the summer programme with Bocconi University. He is also actively involved in faculty research on topics related to Human Resource Management, especially in the field of Compensation and Performance Management. Jacob is currently working at Aon Hewitt Singapore, specialising in Executive Compensation. He is involved in several projects, including assisting leading listed companies in Singapore with their executive pay benchmarking, design and calibration for both short term and long term incentives. Jacob is also a member of the team partnering closely with the Singapore Institute of Directors, researching on corporate governance trends in Singapore and contributing to the publication of the Board of Directors Survey 2010.
Rachael Chiu Mei Chuen It is a great opportunity to be able to work with a leading company in Singapore. I am proud to be a recipient of the inaugural National HR Scholarship. ~Ms Rachael Chiu Mei Chuen, NUS, matched to CapitaLand Limited Rachael Chiu is currently a third year NUS undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Business Administration, specialising in both Management and Finance. Her all-rounded education at Singapore Chinese Girls School (SCGS), taught her to balance her pursuit of academic excellence with giving back to society. Rachael was involved in various leadership platforms in Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC), which included the Entrepreneurship Council, the World Presidents Association and ACJC Orientation Committee. During her second year in NUS Business School, Rachael took on two HR-related internships - with Rehau Pte Ltd (Learning and Development Department) and The Royal Bank of Scotland. These internships exposed her to different functions of HR and fueled her interest in pursuing a career in this field.
Sam Neo Wei Quan "The inaugural NHR scholarship presented a great opportunity for aspiring HR students like me to not only get financial support but more importantly, a platform to kick start my career with a renowned organisation. Attaining this prestigious scholarship was indeed a dream come true and further served as a motivation for me to continue pursuing my goals in life." ~ Mr Sam Neo Wei Quan, NUS, matched to Keppel Corporation Limited After being exposed to a variety of modules and two meaningful internships, Sam Neo decided to major in both Management (HR) and Marketing in his Honours year at the NUS Business School. During this period, Sam participated in a student exchange programme at Copenhagen Business School in 2010. It was a life-changing experience which exposed him to new challenges and brought him out of his comfort zone for the first time. Sam takes the extra time and effort to achieve academic excellence while participating in extra-curriculum commitments. These commitments helped in shaping his personality and molding him into the accomplished person he is today. He assumed multiple leadership roles to enrich himself. For instance, the role as the Chairman for the Eco Agents of T-Net Club @ Taman Jurong presented him with the opportunity to be part of nationwide events such as the World Water Day 2011.
Joyce Lim Wen Qin "It cannot be denied that HR is an extremely important pillar of support for firms to achieve excellence. I look forward to receiving comprehensive coaching and development and to contribute back to the firm and society in the near future." ~Ms Joyce Lim Wen Qin, NTU, matched to Singapore Telecommunications Limited Joyce Lim is currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Business, with a double major in Human Resource Consulting and Marketing, at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). This unique combination broadens her perspective and taught her about selling the company brand to both consumers and employees. She interned at UBS AG where she learnt about the different divisions within HR and how they are integrated to form a single strategic function. Joyce participated in an exchange programme to South Korea, where she had the opportunity to hone her interpersonal skills, develop cultural awareness and empathy. This experience triggered her interest in cultures and their differences, and she looks forward to working in a diverse environment. For the past five years, Joyce has been teaching at her church s Pre-school every Sunday. Joyce joined NTU s Welfare Services Club (WSC), under the Regular Service Project for the Visually Handicapped (RSPVH). These have improved her communication skills and time management skills which she viewed as essential for her future career in SingTel.
Tan Sok Kai "The National HR Scholarship presents an excellent avenue for me to develop a career path in HR. It comes with the opportunity to work for a well-known F&B company, Sakae Holdings. With plans to expand its operations, I find it exciting to have the privilege to be part of Sakae Holdings' strategic HR management. I believe that with the support from the Ministry of Manpower and the guidance from Sakae Holdings, I can better tap on my skills and abilities to serve in HR." ~ Ms Tan Sok Kai, NUS, matched to Sakae Holdings Limited Tan Sok Kai is a third-year undergraduate at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. She participates actively in school activities. Having trained and raced for NUS s dragon boat team, Sok Kai holds the position of Quarter-Master and Welfare during her term. The team was regular winners in various local and overseas dragon boat competitions, such as the prestigious Prime Minister Cup in the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival 2010 and 2011. Apart from her commitment in NUS s dragon boat team, Sok Kai also represented the business school in the Inter-Faculty Games and the varsity s annual fund-raising Rag & Flag event, winning the NUS Chancellor s Shield in her freshman year. Sok Kai participated in an exchange programme to London, Ontario and an immersion trip to Beijing. She also taught English at a secondary school in Bintan as part of an overseas community involvement project, and played host to students from Canada, Hungary and South Korea.
