Weinberg Community for Senior Living

A powerful sense of belonging. The moment you enter Weinberg Community for Senior Living you feel the strength of true community: the fellowship of a close-knit group of friends; the comfort and security of attentive, caring staff; the opportunity to actively engage with life and pursue a wide variety of social, cultural and educational programs. You feel at home.

Surrounded by landscaped walks and sculpture gardens, Weinberg Community for Senior Living is comprised of two distinct assisted living residences for older adults, both of which embrace Jewish traditions. Gidwitz Place for Assisted Living features 125 one- and two-bedroom apartments for discriminating seniors who desire an independent lifestyle, but require a supportive environment. You immediately feel comfortable and right at home when you enter the warm, inviting lobby. Along with dozens of amenities, every day brings a choice of life enrichment programs from discussion groups to art classes all developed by caring, attentive professionals to ensure the physical, emotional and spiritual health of our residents. The Friend Center provides a comforting home for 35 individuals with early- to mid-stage Alzheimer s disease or other cognitive or memory impairments. Residents enjoy spacious private rooms, delicious kosher meals, stimulating programs and assistance with activities of daily living, including housekeeping, bathing, dressing and grooming.

In partnership with Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, CJE SeniorLife is planning a stunning expansion of the Weinberg Campus to create a true Continuing Care Retirement Community by mid-2012. Karmel will be the first Jewish-sponsored CCRC in the Chicago area and will add elegant independent living residences, a state-of-the art skilled nursing facility and acres of lush landscaping to Weinberg s existing and highly-acclaimed assisted living residences. Our philosophy at Weinberg is to help our residents celebrate every day. It s what we do it s who we are and it s why you can call it home.

To ensure a personal and flexible service plan, we take the time to review all your needs, which we recognize may change over time. For those who require the highest level of support, our Gidwitz Plus program provides additional personal care, housekeeping and nursing services so that residents can stay at Gidwitz Place as long as possible. The Friend Center for Alzheimer s Care The focus at Weinberg is providing customized care. The Friend Center recognizes the special needs of people with Alzheimer s disease or other cognitive or memory impairments. The carefully planned atmosphere, well-trained staff and engaging activities help our residents maintain a strong sense of independence, comfort and security. We re dedicated to finding ways around the problems and challenges brought on by memory loss. Residents receive individual attention from our staff that extends beyond compassionate medical and personal care to encompass relationships built through thoughtful interactions from being a comforting presence during a stressful moment to accompanying a resident for a leisurely walk through the gardens. The home-like atmosphere helps new residents immediately feel at ease. They are encouraged to personalize their private rooms with favorite photos or treasures. Throughout Friend Center, the design is simple, lighting is soft and the carpeting quiets harsh noises. Color schemes and signage are chosen specifically to provide cues that help guide residents through their daily activities. For Friend Center residents, socialization is a regular part of each day and might include exercise classes, excursions to cultural events or holiday celebrations. More active older adults with early-stage dementias take advantage of our award-winning Culture Bus program which includes a variety of excursions to cultural destinations throughout Metropolitan Chicago. Three delicious kosher meals a day, 24-hour nursing care, myriad opportunities for socialization, activities geared toward memory support and preserving cognitive functions, professionals who understand an individual resident s evolving cognitive and physical needs and a commitment to preserving dignity and independence that s the heart of Friend Center. Adult Day Services & Respite Care Our supervised, structured Adult Day Services program is open to Weinberg residents and the general public. Geared toward people in different stages of Alzheimer s disease or other cognitive or memory impairments, as well as those who are too frail to be left alone during the day, the program also provides much-needed respite for family caregivers. Our professional staff plan creative activities to stimulate the mind and body. The group setting maximizes each participant s potential by promoting autonomy, creativity and self-esteem.

Jewish values for positive aging The difference is our spirit. Comfort, safety and independence are significant considerations in choosing any home and at Weinberg Community for Senior Living these are also the touchstones of our community. But Weinberg is about much more: the spirit of the place, the friendships, the possibilities for expanding your mind; it s a place where you can relax and be yourself. At Weinberg, Jewish values are the foundation for our mission to enhance the lives of older adults. We respect each individual s spiritual beliefs. We ve created opportunities for you to be as observant as you wish, from attending High Holy Day services, celebrating Kiddush on Friday nights or studying Judaism through stimulating classes, lectures and discussion groups. Whether you enjoy the tantalizing aroma of fresh baked challah on Shabbat, or you d like to finally celebrate your Bat Mitzvah, Weinberg is the place for you. Even our logo a colorful pomegranate is a reflection of our Jewish values. One of the seven species of biblical Israel and an enduring motif in Jewish art, the pomegranate is an ancient Hebrew symbol of life and abundance that heralds the beginning of a new year. Today, pomegranates are prized as a source of important antioxidants that combat disease and promote healthy aging, a fitting representation of the health and well-being that CJE cultivates.
