NEW YORK: 211 West 61st Street New York, NY 10023 212.787.5300 800.367.7908 faony@amda.edu LOS ANGELES: 6305 Yucca Street Los Angeles, CA 90028 323.469.3300 866.374.5300 faola@amda.edu Every step is very important. If at any time you need personal assistance please feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office.

step APPLY FOR A FEDERAL PIN pin.ed.gov WHO APPLIES? Student and one parent WHAT IS A PIN? A PIN is a four-digit number used in combination with your Social Security Number, name and date of birth to identify you as someone who has the right to access your own personal information on federal student aid websites, such as FAFSA, on the Web. If you are a parent and you want to electronically sign a FAFSA for your child, you need your own PIN. If you have more than one child attending college, you can use the same PIN to sign their applications. The security of your PIN is important. It can be used to: Electronically sign federal student aid documents Access your personal records Make binding legal obligations If your PIN is lost or stolen: Contact FAFSA s Customer Service Center: 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) Request a new PIN by selecting Change My PIN on the PIN site Disable your PIN so that no one can use it by selecting Disable My PIN on the PIN site.

step COMPLETE THE 2015 16 FAFSA FORM fafsa.ed.gov WHO APPLIES? The student WHAT IS THE FAFSA? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is the application that students must file to apply for aid from any federal student aid program. REQUIRED INFORMATION: Before completing the FAFSA, be sure to gather all needed information such as your Social Security Number, driver s license (if applicable), your 2014 tax documents, your 2014 Federal Income Tax Return (if filed), your parent s 2014 tax documents, your parent s 2014 Federal Tax Returns (if filed), permanent resident card, bank statements, and current business and investment records. AMDA SCHOOL CODE: 016082 (IF YOU DID NOT INCLUDE AMDA PLEASE CALL 1-800-433-3243 TO ADD)

step AWARDS AND FORMS amda.edu Scholarships and Financial Aid After completing your FAFSA, please allow a minimum of 72 business hours for the Department of Education to process your application. Once the Department of Education has processed your application and AMDA has received it, one of two things will happen: If your application is complete and no further information is needed: You will receive an Award Letter/Financial Plan which will outline your financial aid plan and any remaining payments. If your FAFSA application has been selected for verification, you will need to: Submit a FAFSA correction utilizing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT), to transfer your 2014 income data from the IRS. In most cases, no further income documentation is needed as long as the transferred data is not changed. If you are unable to use the IRS DRT, you may be able submit an official IRS Transcript. Applications selected for verification are placed into tracking groups based on the information needed for verification. The student s tracking group is noted on their student aid report. Please complete a 2015 16 Verification Worksheet for the appropriate tracking group. You can find the Worksheet in the Scholarships and Financial Aid section of amda.edu. The worksheet should be completed and submitted within two weeks of notification of verification. You will be notified by the Financial Aid Office if any additional information is required. This may include items such as proof of citizenship, proof of high school completion and proof of selective service registration.

step DIRECT STAFFORD LOAN MPN AND ENTRANCE COUNSELING studentloans.gov If you are awarded and accept Federal Direct Stafford Loans, you a required to go to the website below to complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is the legal agreement between the student and the US Department of Education regarding the terms and conditions of the loan. Once you have completed the MPN, go to the same website to complete mandatory entrance counseling. This is required for anyone receiving a federal loan; your loan funds cannot be disbursed without confirmation that entrance counseling has been completed.

step amda.edu Scholarships and Financial Aid studentloans.gov OPTIONS FOR COVERING THE REMAINING BALANCE You may utilize any combination of the following options. PAYMENT PLAN OPTIONS Standard Four-Payment Plan: AMDA offers a standard payment plan of four scheduled payments at 0% interest. Two payments are collected before your first semester begins and the two remaining before your second semester. Extended Payment Plan: AMDA offers this option over an eight-month payment period. This option has a $295 processing fee, which may be waived under certain conditions. Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you plan to use this option. FEDERAL PARENT PLUS LOAN If a parent would like to apply for a Federal Parent Plus Loan, he/she needs to visit amda.edu/financialaid to download a copy of the Parent Plus Loan Credit Check Authorization form. Complete the form and then fax to your financial aid counselor. The counselor will conduct the necessary credit check. If approved, the parent should complete a PLUS MPN at studentloans.gov. Who Applies: Parent of AMDA student (must be a US citizen or permanent resident). The student must complete the parent information on the FAFSA application. If Parent Plus Loan is Denied: The parent may re-apply with an endorser (co-signer). If this is not an option, the student will qualify for additional federal loan funds. Please contact the Financial Aid Office. Loans begin repayment 60 days after the second disbursement of the loan is made. You may postpone repayment while the beneficiary student remains enrolled at least half time and for an additional six months afterwards. MORE

STEP 5 (CONTINUED) PRIVATE/ALTERNATIVE LOAN amda.edu/alternative amda.edu Alternative Loans What am I applying for? You are applying for a Private/Alternative Loan. Do not complete this process if you have notified the Financial Aid office and plan to pay AMDA directly for tuition. AMDA Lender Code: 0075272-00 Who Applies: The student and, if needed, a co-signer. If a student does not have an established credit history and is initially denied, they may still qualify for private student loans by applying with a cosigner with sufficient credit. Applying with a co-signer may also lower interest rates and loan fees. Once you have completed the loan application process AMDA will be notified and will revise your financial plan (payment agreement).

GRANT or LOAN? What s the difference? A GRANT is financial aid which does not have to be repaid to the source. A LOAN is financial aid which is borrowed, requiring repayment to the lender. DEPENDENT If a student is NOT 24 years of age or older by December 31 of that award year, an orphan or ward of the court, a military veteran of the US, a graduate student, a married individual, or have legal dependents; they are considered a dependent student and must provide their parent s information when submitting their FAFSA. DISBURSEMENT The release of grant or loan funds to a students account. Any monies received in excess of student charges are then paid to the student or parent borrower in the case of loans. EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) This is the number that s used to determine your eligibility for federal student financial aid. TERMS (CONTINUED) FEDERAL STAFFORD UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN A loan for which the borrower is fully responsible for paying the interest regardless of the loan status. Interest on unsubsidized loans accrues from the date of disbursement and continues throughout the life of the loan. Students may avoid paying the interest while they are in school by capitalizing the interest, which increases the loan amount. Unsubsidized loans are not based on financial need. FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT Federal and institution funded, school administered need-based grant program available to students who meet Pell Grant eligibility requirements. FINANCIAL AID Assistance provided to the students and families to help pay for the costs of education. Major forms of financial aid include gift aid (grants and scholarships) and self-help aid (loans and work). A parent refusing to provide support for their child s education is not sufficient for the child to be declared independent. MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE (MPN) The binding legal document that must be signed by the student borrower before loan funds are disbursed by the lender. The promissory note states the terms and conditions of the loan, including repayment schedule, interest rate, deferment policy and cancellations. The student should keep this document until the loan has been repaid. PARENT PLUS LOAN Federal loans availalbe to parents of dependent undergraduate students to help finance their education. Parents may borrow up to the full cost of their child s education, less than the amount of any other financial aid received. There is a credit check required for the PLUS loan. If your application for a PLUS loan is turned down, your child may be eligible to borrow additional money under the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan program.

PELL GRANT A federal grant that provides funds based on the student s financial need. PIN NUMBER A PIN is a four-digit number used in combination with your Social Security Number, name, and date of birth to identify you as someone who has the right to access your own personal information on Federal Student Aid websites, such as FAFSA on the Web. If you are a parent and you want to electronically sign a FAFSA for your child, you need your own PIN. If you have more than one child attending college, you can use the same PIN to sign their applications. PRIVATE/ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION LOAN PROGRAMS Established by private lenders to supplement the student and parent education loan programs available from federal and state governments. STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY An internal AMDA form that indicates who would pay any balance remaining after financial aid is received or should financial aid not come through. VERIFICATION Verification is a process in which the Financial Aid Office determines the accuracy of the information provided on the student s FAFSA. Please see Step 3, Awards and Forms, for important information on the verification process. If any discrepancies are uncovered during verification, the Financial Aid Office may require additional information to clear up the discrepancies. Such discrepancies may cause your final financial aid package to be different from the initial package described on the award letter you received from the school. If you refuse to submit the required documentation, your financial aid package will be cancelled and no aid awarded.
