PART TIME DIPLOMA IN INFOCOMM & DIGITAL MEDIA (IT NETWORK AND SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION) Introduction This Course is designed to equip students with a good working knowledge in IT networking and system administration skills required for the deployment, operations, support and maintenance of next generation IT Infrastructure services and computing resources. Under a revised Continuing Education and Training (CET) framework, this course will be modular, so as to provide greater flexibility for adult learners to customise to their pace of learning. Course Duration 5 Semesters over 2.5 academic years. 3 evenings on campus sessions per week from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm Course Structure The Course consists of five programmes, each leading to a Modular Certificate upon successful completion. The five Modular Certificates are: Certificate in System Essentials Certificate in Network Administration Certificate in Network Operations and Support Certificate in Green and Cloud Computing Certificate in Advanced Network Services 1
Award/Accreditation Upon completion of the five Certificates, the participant will be conferred a Diploma qualification from Nanyang Polytechnic. A CET Qualification Award of $1,000 will also be issued to first time Singaporean diploma graduates upon attaining the full diploma within the candidature period as long as it is a higher qualification than other full qualifications previously attained. Minimum Entry Qualifications Applicants with the following qualifications are invited to apply for the course: GCE O level with English language (grade 1 7), Mathematics (grade 1 6) and a Science subject (grade 1 6) or equivalent with at least 3 years of relevant IT working experience. ITE NITEC GPA 3.5 with at least 2 years of IT relevant working experience. ITE Higher NITEC with at least 1 year of IT relevant working experience. Relevant WSQ (Singapore Workforce Skills Qualification) Diploma qualification or equivalent, with relevant working experience. WPLN (Workplace Literacy and Numeracy) Level 6 may be accepted as equivalent O Level English Language & Math requirements. Entry tests may be offered to those adult learners who have relevant working experience but do not fully meet any of the alternative entry requirements. Module Synopsis Essentials of IT and Networking This module provides students with the basic concept of computer technology and networking. It covers PC hardware and software, networking fundamentals, network terminology and protocols, local area networks, wide area networks, Open System Interconnection (OSI), various types of transmission media, internetworking devices, Ethernet technologies and switching, TCP/IP protocol suites and internet protocol addressing and packet analysis and network standards. Operating System Essentials This module covers the fundamentals concepts of operating systems with a focus on the important features and functions of an operating system. These include the management of memory space and peripheral devices, file management, system security requirements and system administration. Students will also be exposed to different types of operating systems such as Windows and Linux. Programming Essentials This module provides students with fundamental programming knowledge and skills. Students will be taught how to develop programs to automate frequently executed commands, implement conditional logic, user interaction, loops, menus, traps, and functions, as well as to perform debugging. Emphasis will be on placed on developing real life practical applications. LAN Switching and Wireless Network This module covers the theoretical and practical approach to learning the technologies and protocols needed to design and implement a converged switched network. Students learn about the hierarchical network design model and how to select devices for each layer. The course explains how to configure a switch for basic functionality and how to implement Virtual LANs, VTP, and Inter-VLAN routing in a converged network. Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to implement a WLAN in a small-to-medium network. Open Systems Administration This module covers the enterprise concepts of operating system with a focus on system administration. These include the management of file systems, system security/recovery, network directory services and software deployment for the enterprise. Students will be able to administer and troubleshoot file systems and partitioning, logical volume management, access control and package management. 3
IT Services and Management This module provides an insight into the latest developments in the field of IT service management. It enables students to apply various methodologies regarding to planning, support, delivery and management of quality IT services. It covers concepts, terms, definitions, objectives, benefits and relationships within core IT service management processes and functions according to best practices framework. The module also covers well-proven project management methodologies, techniques and best practices to equip students with the knowledge and crucial skills to effectively initiate, plan, implement and manage today s IT project. Enterprise System Administration This module covers server administration and management in an enterprise environment. Students will be able to differentiate various types of operating system and configure network services across multiple server operating systems. Topics covered include users and computer accounts, access to resources, organizational units, printing, group policy, performance monitoring, disk management, disaster recovery, network services, web services, Domain Name Services (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), email server, network file sharing services, security policies and authentication services. Internetworking Technologies This module covers the components, and operation of routers, and explains the principles of routing and routing protocols. Students analyse, configure, verify, and troubleshoot the primary routing protocols RIPv1, RIPv2, EIGRP, and OSPF. Students will be able to recognize and correct common routing issues and problems. Packet Tracer activities reinforce new concepts, and allow students to model and analyse routing processes that may be difficult to visualize or understand. InfoSecurity Technology This module covers the essential aspects of information security from personal and enterprise perspectives. It begins with an understanding about information security trends, security threats, security incidents and the motivations to provide information security. Information security policies, procedures and guidelines will be covered. Green Computing Technologies This module covers the implementing, maintaining and optimizing of Green Computing Technologies for IT infrastructure. It provides a good understanding of Green IT and the methods used for sustainable computing practices where existing IT techniques and skills can be employed, classified and measured in the context of Green IT in a practical way. 4
Cloud Computing This module covers cloud computing, a paradigm of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources and services which are provided over the Internet. It introduces the concept and business case of cloud computing and compares it with previous computing models. It proceed to explain cloud computing characteristics, components and architecture followed by different cloud computing models. The module concludes with topics on cloud computing security and standards and governance. Enterprise Networking This module covers the WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in enterprise networks. The module introduces integrated network services and explains how to select the appropriate devices and technologies to meet network requirements. Students learn how to implement and configure common data link protocols and how to apply WAN security concepts, principles of traffic, access control, and addressing services. Finally, students learn how to detect, troubleshoot, and correct common enterprise network implementation issues. Virtualisation and Data Centre Management This module equips students with the knowledge, skills and techniques in planning, installation and configuration of virtualized infrastructure using virtual machines, virtual storage and virtual networking in the next generation data centre. To support the industry needs in various cloud computing and virtualization environments, system management tools will be covered to equip the students with the ability to manage, deploys, updates servers, client computers and devices across physical, virtual and distributed environments. The trends of virtualization and its role in cloud computing will also be covered. The Green Data Centre methodologies, best practices and business continuity will also be introduced to the students. Network Security This module aims to provide a sound understanding of the technologies and tools used in architecting and implementing effective network security solutions. It begins with security foundation topics, including the use of applied cryptography, public key infrastructure, secure network protocols, wireless security and virtual private network to provide secure communications. IP Convergence Networks This module focuses on integrating voice communication into underlying network architectures. Students learn how to design, configure and implement a IP telephony solution. The hands-on training will provide the students with the technical skills to implement configure and troubleshoot a converged Internet Protocol (IP) network. 5
