Tinbergen Institute Welcome We are proud to introduce Tinbergen Institute (TI). TI is a highly ranked research institute and graduate school combining the best researchers in economics, econometrics and finance of three of the leading universities in the Netherlands: Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam. The graduate school is geared towards ambitious and excellent students who aim to develop themselves as independent researchers and experts in their fields. During two years of MPhil study, students have the opportunity to meet the many research fellows of TI and to formulate a PhD research proposal. MPhil students who graduate from the program typically continue in a three-year PhD track at one of the faculties within TI. Students who complete the PhD program are prepared for careers in academic research, national and international governmental organizations, or the private sector. This brochure provides you with an overview of our graduate program and research institute. Bauke Visser, General Director Massimo Giuliodori, Director of Graduate Studies About TI Tinbergen Institute is the accredited graduate school and research institute operated jointly by the Economics faculties of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), University of Amsterdam (UvA) and VU University Amsterdam (VU). TI was founded in 1987 by these three universities, and has offices in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Institute is named after Jan Tinbergen, the Dutch Nobel Prize laureate in Economics (1969). Today, TI is one of the major economic research institutes in the Netherlands, with more than 160 research fellows and 220 students. TI research master s (MPhil) program currently has an annual influx of around 25 MPhil students who receive training and supervision from the Institute s research fellows. TI ensures the high quality of the graduate program by selecting the best researchers and lecturers in economics, econometrics and finance of the three participating universities. In addition, TI invites internationally renowned experts to serve as guest lecturers. After completing this two-year program of intensive coursework and research, many TI students continue into a fully paid three-year PhD track at one of the faculties. TI provides training to an international community of excellent students. With 30 nationalities represented in the institute since 2010, and 75% of our incoming students originating from abroad, Tinbergen Institute provides a truly international experience. As part of its mission to stimulate research, Tinbergen Institute defines quality standards for researchers. Fellows work in 8 research groups that covers all fields in economics, econometrics and finance. The research school organizes over 25 seminar series, a discussion paper series and provides funding for research activities such as conferences and major workshops. The Director of Graduate Studies helps the MPhil students by matching them with suitable supervisors chosen from among the many TI research fellows. This means that TI can offer expert supervision in almost any specialized field of economics, econometrics or finance. The Institute s PhD students are employed as PhD researchers by the departments of the participating universities. These are full-time positions that come with all the benefits of employment, including a good salary. TI s additional financial support program provides ambitious PhD students the means with which to promote their research, gain further experience, and start building their international network by visiting international conferences, workshops and seminars. Also, TI assists in finding traineeships or visiting researcher positions for PhD students e.g. at the ECB or Toulouse School of Economics.

job market Lucyna Górnicka (MPhil 2012, PhD 2015): Placement: International Monetary Fund (IMF) An excellent preparation to interviews and fly outs is as important as the quality of your job market paper. The other quarter are employed in private-sector firms (usually large banks and consultancy firms). Job market services Tinbergen Institute offers a number of facilities to PhD students in their final year who are about to enter the (international) academic job market. TI organizes a series of workshops and mock interview sessions to assist PhD students in successfully preparing for the academic job market in general, and in particular for the job market at the annual AEA meetings. admission Bastian Ravesteijn (MPhil 2011, PhD 2015): Placement: Harvard University The TI program equipped me with the tools to work on policy-relevant research topics, and this was instrumental in finding a job after the PhD. Highly Selective Admission Admission for the MPhil program is highly selective and competitive. A maximum of 30 students may enroll each year. Students are selected by the institute s Admission Board in a rigorous and careful process. Read more: www.tinbergen.nl/ prospective-students-applicationadmission-deadlines for admission requirements and application deadlines. Application Applicants are advised to submit their application by the priority deadline of February 1 because both the number of places and the funding opportunities are limited. Applicants who would like to be considered for a scholarship should apply as early as possible. Scholarships TI runs its own merit-based scholarship program for students in the research master program. Over the years, we have offered scholarships to some 50% of the students that entered the program. Percentages are even higher for second-year students. In the second year, the vast majority of the students get additional income from part-time appointments as teaching- or research assistant. Fly-in program for admitted students In the spring of 2016, we will host the Taste of TI program for admitted students of the forthcoming cohort 2016-2018. This all-expenses-paid fly-in program offers a group of selected students an opportunity to get a taste of Tinbergen Institute.
