MailEnable Statistics Beta 1.2 Date: 31-Mar-2005 Introduction Thank-you for participating in the beta testing of MailEnable Statistics. The objective of Beta testing is to facilitate the following: 1. Evaluation of the product in anticipation of its release 2. Integration testing of the product with other applications 3. Platform preview for developers or those wishing to extend or integrate the product with others 4. Stability testing of the product in different environments and in real-world load scenarios. Details of the beta program are available at http://www.mailenable.com/beta MailEnable Statistics draws information from MailEnable log files. This information is then aggregated at a system and/or each Post Office level to facilitate the generation or analysis data, graphs and reports. Known Limitations This beta release has the following known limitations: MailEnable Statistics requires that W3C logging is enabled for the respective services that are to be reported on. All W3C logging must be configured as daily logging. Details for configuring W3C logging is available from within MailEnable User Manuals. There is no current way to schedule the generation of HTML graphs other than using the Statistics Console to Export the graphs for a designated postoffice. Where the console is used to generate the graphs, it will take considerable time to generate the graphs for the selected postoffice. (This will not be the case in the final product). Product Installation and Setup MailEnable Statistics does not require any specific setup or installation other than installing it from the provided installation into the nominated program directory. The installation wizard and self documented explainations should be enough to facilitate the installation of the product.
Once the software has been installed, an additional icon will appear in the MailEnable program group. This icon will be labeled Server Statistics. MailEnable Statistics Console You can launch the MailEnable Statistics Console by simple selecting the icon from the menu (as you would typically launch any other application on your computer). When the application loads it will display a list of reports in the left hand panel. These reports are grouped by Service/Protocol and can be expanded and collapsed like any typical tree-view list. Two types of reports are provided. These are described in the following table: Report Type Account/Postoffice Reports System Reports Description These reports are reports group data that can reasonably be correlated to a postoffice. For example, in the case of POP, an account/postoffice report would allow you to see the POP activity occurring for a specific postoffice. These reports apply to the entire system. For example, a report on the Data Sent via the SMTP Connector (as a system report) would show the volume of outbound traffic resulting from all MailEnable SMTP activity.
MailEnable Reports MailEnable reports are listed under report categories. These categories typically represent the service or protocol that provides the log files for analysis. The report category menu is show below: Detailed explanation of the default reports provided are outlined in the following table: Report Category Report Name Description SMTP Connector Data Received The number of Bytes, Kilobytes or Megabytes transferred to the Messages Sent Number of messages sent by the SMTP Connector. Messages Received Number of messages received by the SMTP Connector. Messages Blocked Number of incoming messages blocked by the SMTP Connector. Total Messages Blocked Number of messages blocked by Reverse DNS Blacklisting. RDNS POP Service Data Received The number of Bytes, Kilobytes or Megabytes transferred to the IMAP Service Data Received The number of Bytes, Kilobytes or Megabytes transferred to the User Logins The number of times that users have issued a login request to the POP Messages Downloaded Service The number of messages downloaded via the POP protocol
HTTPMail Service Data Received MTA Filters Filters Processed The number of Bytes, Kilobytes or Megabytes transferred to the This report shows the number of instances/events where a filter was fired as the result of messages passing through the MTA. For example, the filter should allow you to determine the number of messages caught by antivirus agents as they pass through MailEnable for delivery. Report Parameters Before setting the parameters for a report, you must first select the report by clicking on the type of report you wish to access. Selecting the report will load the reports default set of parameters and units-ofmeasure. The report parameters are listed immediately below the report category menu. This is shown below: You can then subsequently modify the parameters of the report as required. The following table indicates outlines report parameters and their meaning: Report Name Minimum Value Scale Report Date Report Period Description This allows you to mask out low end data from the report. Specifically, you can remove insignificant data from charts by setting this low end threshold. Any data below the minimum value threshold will not appear in the report. The scale represents the unit of measure for the report. This value is used to scale the report and apply a multiplier/divisor to the unit of measure. The first day of the reporting period. The reporting period allows you to select whether a Daily or Monthly report is to be displayed. A Daily Report will yield summary data for all of the days within a month. A Monthly Report will yield summary data for the last six months prior to the Report Date. Generating the Report Once the parameters have been modified, you should click on the Show button and the console will generate the report after aggregating the respective log files. You can also right click on the report from the left hand menu and perform an array of actions for the report (one of which is to Show the report).
Others include: Print the Report Copy the Report Graph to the Clipboard Show the RAW Data Grid for the Report Since MailEnable Stats caches the results of a log file aggregation, each log file largely need only be processed once. This significant reduces the processing load on system resources since only incremental activity data need be compiled. Management and Maintenance Managing Report Periods From the Tools menu you can select the menu option to Manage Report Data Periods. Once you have clicked this menu option a form will be displayed as follows: This form allows you to inspect the current status of data extracted from log files and to manually import any such data should there be some discrepancy in the reporting or log processing. To re-import data for a specific service, you must do as follows: 1. Select the month relevant to the data import.
2. Select the protocol/service for which you want to import the data for 3. Select the period(s) for which you wish to extract data from the respective log files. (Note, you can select multiple periods by holding down the shift or control key when selecting (clicking) on the periods. Enterprise Edition Features Those customers with MailEnable Enterprise Edition will have additional features available. Specifically, they will be able to export reports as HTML and allow postoffice administrators to access such reports via a secure portal. By providing this, the administrator must first select which postoffices are to have HTML reports generated. This is done under the Tools Postoffice Configuration menu. After selecting the menu option, the following dialog will be displayed. HTML Export of Reports can be enabled or disabled for each postoffice simply by double clicking on the postoffice name. Under the File menu, there is also an additional option to export the reports. This quite simply renders the report and places a html version of the report into the respective postoffice(s) STATSROOT directory. This report can then be accessed via the Statistics Management Portal.
Statistics Management Portal The Statistics Management portal is accessed via http://[domainname]/mestats In order to login to the portal you must be an administrator (ADMIN) of the postoffice. The Statistics Managmement Portal provides access to generated reports via HTML, in a similar way as to how postoffice administrators can use webadmin to manage their postoffice. Note: The Statistics Management Portal is only available for registered Enterprise Edition customers or those who have independently registered StatsEnable (ie: the version of MailEnable Statistics that also processes WWW and FTP W3C).
