EditShare ReadMe Storage Version 7.0.0.5 Ark Version 2.5.0.5 February 5, 2015 This release supports new server hardware, resolves several issues, and updates EditShare Connect. Always check http://updates.editshare.com for the latest version of this ReadMe. The Flow ReadMe document is installed on your server as part of the update and is also available on http://updates.editshare.com. See the following sections: Important Considerations Before You Update New in Storage 7.0.0.5 Fixed in Storage 7.0.0.5 Known Issues in Storage 7.0.0.5 Fixed in Ark 2.5.0.5 Supported Client Versions Technical Support Information
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU UPDATE Important Considerations Before You Update Consider the following before you update to the current version: As a good practice, all of our Ark tape customers are strongly urged to make sure that their LTO tape library and drive firmware is up-to-date. EditShare has produced a document that guides users in checking for and installing firmware for supported tape libraries. New in Storage 7.0.0.5 Mellanox 40-gigabit Ethernet drivers. This release adds support for high-speed Mellanox network adapters. Improved compatibility with Chyron Lyric software. In older versions of EditShare, media exported from Lyric in a QuickTime container onto a media space would produce an error when played in QuickTime Player. This release includes an updated version of the Samba service that resolves this issue. Fixed in Storage 7.0.0.5 Improved folder management on Managed media spaces using AFP. Editors mounting Managed media spaces using AFP on older versions of EditShare may have encountered folders that could not be deleted using OS X Finder, even when empty. This release resolves this issue. Improved SMB stability. In certain circumstances, mounting spaces using SMB, especially when mounting a space with a user after adding or removing that user fromother spaces, could result in a temporary connection issue. This release resolves this issue. Daily Health Report correctly reports on Energy expander chassis. The daily server report emails would previously generate a false critical error on Energy servers with a connected expansion chassis. This release resolves this issue, and the Daily Health Report now accurately reports on degraded RAID units in the expansion chassis. 2
FIXED IN STORAGE 7.0.0.5 EditShare Connect performs better for users with large lists of media spaces. Editors with access to many media spaces may have experienced slow server response performance when launching, mounting, or unmounting media spaces. This release includes a new version of EditShare Connect that improves performance. Improved database log management. Certain database logs could grow large enough to disrupt other server logs, potentially resulting in server instability on older versions. This release improves log rotation to maintain more free space for server logs. Daily system and configuration backups function correctly. On servers upgraded from EditShare 6, the daily backup job that saves server configuration files, user settings, and Shared Project Spaces would not run on schedule. This release resolves this issue. EditShare Storage properly updates databases when media spaces are deleted. In older versions of EditShare, a database used by Flow to track deleted media spaces may not have been modifiable, resulting in stale information in Flow clients. This release checks for and resolves this issue. Improvements to the EditShare 7 Upgrade USB Drive. When upgrading to or installing EditShare 7 on certain server configurations, the installer may have encountered problems that impeded the upgrade or installation. This has been resolved in recent EditShare 7 Upgrade USB Drives. For information about updating your Upgrade USB Drive, contact EditShare Support. VNC connections work with more network configurations. VNC connections to EditShare 7 servers may have failed on networks with certain hostname or DNS configurations, even if they worked under EditShare 6. This release updates the VNC service and resolves this issue. NFS Export tool recognizes all users. Older versions of EditShare would not list available users when exporting a space for NFS access. This release resolves this issue. Security updates. This release updates MySQL to 5.5.41, including Oracle s January 2015 Security Update, and updates the glibc library to resolve the GHOST vulnerability. 3
KNOWN ISSUES IN STORAGE 7.0.0.5 Known Issues in Storage 7.0.0.5 Users cannot delete empty folders from Lockable Shared Project Spaces. There is no way in the EditShare Connect Projects tab, OS X Finder, Windows Explorer, or other workstation tools to delete empty folders in Lockable Shared Project Spaces. You can still rename these folders, and the folders will be removed if the Shared Project Space itself is removed. The server administrator can also delete folders from the Shared Project Space using the Manage Shared Project Files Space section of the Project Spaces tab in any EditShare Manager. For more information, see the Organizing Project Files section of the Project File Sharing chapter in the EditShare 7 Administrator s Guide. Fixed in Ark 2.5.0.5 Ark can now email large lists of files. In previous versions of Ark, emailing large lists of files from the Ark user interface such as the list of backed-up files on a media space with tens of thousands of files would fail. This release resolves this issue. Supported Client Versions This release supports several versions of client operating systems and editing applications. See the following sections: "Client Operating Systems" on page 5 "Editing Applications" on page 5 "Considerations for Using DAVE SMB (Macintosh Only)" on page 9 4
SUPPORTED CLIENT VERSIONS Client Operating Systems See your editing application documentation for information on operating systems supported for your application version. EditShare has qualified its software with the following operating systems: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion), 10.9 (Mavericks), and 10.10 (Yosemite) on Intel Macs All compatible versions of OS X can mount spaces using the AFP protocol. OS X workstations mounting spaces using the SMB protocol require a compatible version of Thursby Software s DAVE software. For more information and a list of compatible DAVE versions for your operating system, see "Considerations for Using DAVE SMB (Macintosh Only)" on page 9. Editing Applications EditShare works with many client editing applications and versions. EditShare has completed compatibility testing as described in the following sections: "Avid Media Composer" on page 5 "EditShare and Avid Media Composer Version 6 and newer" on page 7 "Apple Final Cut Pro" on page 8 "Other Editing Applications" on page 9 Avid Media Composer EditShare strongly recommends that you run your Avid application with the QuickTime version and operating system that Avid supports for your Avid software. For more information, see the Avid Media Composer Version Matrix at http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_us/compatibility/en267087, or navigate to the Avid Technology Knowledge Base for your product and search for Composer Version Matrix. See "EditShare and Avid Media Composer Version 6 and newer" on page 7. See Note 5. NOTE 1: If you use an Avid system from v3.1.3/7.1.3 or later, the Avid systems with which you share projects need to run v3.1.3/7.1.3 or later. If you use an Avid system from v3.1.2 or earlier, the Avid systems with which you share projects need to run v3.1.2 and earlier. NOTE 2: EditShare Avid Style media spaces are not compatible with Avid Media Composer version v5.5.1 for OS X. You cannot create projects or capture media into Avid Style media spaces in this version of Media Composer. The same limitation affects this version of Media Composer when used with Avid s own Ethernet-attached Unity systems. Media Composer v5.5.1 for Windows is not affected. NOTE 3: In all versions of Media Composer v5.5.2 whether for Windows or OS X XDCAM HD and XDCAM-EX media files do not play back correctly when stored in EditShare Avid Style Media Spaces or Avid's own Ethernet-attached Unity systems. EditShare recommends upgrading to Media Composer v5.5.3 or newer. 6
SUPPORTED CLIENT VERSIONS NOTE 4: There is a known bug in Avid Media Composer v6.0.1.1 on OS X that causes Avid to crash when anything is dragged onto an Avid window or panel. The bug is not limited to EditShare products, and an Avid community moderator recommends changing your workflow to import files into Avid rather than dragging and dropping. NOTE 5: There is a known bug in Avid Media Composer v8.2 and v8.3 on OS X Yosemite (10.10) that reduces Avid playback and rendering performance on 12-core 2013 Mac Pro (Ivy Bridge 6,1 Cylinder) and dual 6-core Mac Pro (Westmere 5,1 tower) model CPUs. Avid recommends using OS X Mavericks (10.9.5) on these systems. These versions of Media Composer may also exhibit reduced performance when using Avid Style media spaces, particularly on OS X. If you use Avid Style media spaces, EditShare recommends using Media Composer 7 if possible. EditShare and Avid Media Composer Version 6 and newer Media Composer versions 6.x and newer for Windows are currently supported without any special caveats for use with all compatible EditShare spaces Avid MXF Media Spaces, Avid Style Media Spaces, and Avid Shared Project Spaces. However, if you must use an SMB workflow, you should use only the latest EditShare-approved versions of DAVE for your operating system. See "Considerations for Using DAVE SMB (Macintosh Only)" on page 9. 7
SUPPORTED CLIENT VERSIONS Apple Final Cut Pro EditShare 7 s default configuration supports the use of FCP X for media, Event, Project, and Library storage on AFP- or SMB-mounted spaces. For more information, see Chapter 9: Using EditShare with Final Cut Pro X in the EditShare 7 Editor s Guide. The following table lists specific EditShare compatibility features with various versions of Final Cut Pro and OS X: FCP Version OS X Version 7.0.3 and OS X 10.4.x-10.6.x earlier 7.0.3 with all updates OS X 10.7.x FCP Media Stored on EditShare Compatible. NOTE 1: To use FCP X with SMB-mounted spaces on OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) and newer, you must use the correct version of DAVE. See "Considerations for Using DAVE SMB (Macintosh Only)" on page 9. EditShare 7 also supports FCP X on AFP-mounted spaces without third-party software. NOTE 2: FCP X 10.1 and newer handle Projects and Events differently from FCP X 10.0.x, and introduce Libraries to the FCP X workflow. See Using Final Cut Pro X 10.1 with EditShare Storage in the EditShare 7 Editor s Guide for information on converting FCP X Projects and Events from 10.0.x to 10.1.x and handling Libraries. NOTE 3: FCP X 10.1.3 may be unable to write to bundles stored on EditShare media spaces. As a workaround, FCP X users can create a sparse image in an EditShare media space, mount it, and copy the bundle into the sparse image. For help creating sparse images using OS X Disk Utility, see http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5841#dskutl11888-i. 8
SUPPORTED CLIENT VERSIONS Other Editing Applications EditShare 7 supports Adobe Premiere Pro CC and earlier. For more information, see Chapter 10: Using EditShare with Adobe Premiere Pro in the EditShare 7 Editor s Guide. EditShare 7 supports all versions of ProTools (including OS X and Windows versions) with EditShare iscsi Spaces. ProTools 8 and later for Windows is supported for any EditShare Media Space. ProTools 10 and later for both OS X and Windows are supported with any type of EditShare space. NOTE: ProTools 10 users on Windows can read media from SMB volumes and store their sessions on Managed or Unmanaged spaces. ProTools 10 users on OS X can read media from SMB volumes but should store their sessions on Managed or Unmanaged spaces mounted ONLY by AFP. While you can store your ProTools 10 sessions on spaces mounted by DAVE, you cannot record back to a DAVE-mounted volume. Recording will stop after a few seconds. However, there is no issue recording back AFP-mounted volumes. NOTE: If you run an earlier version of ProTools for Windows and connect to EditShare Media Spaces without iscsi, contact EditShare Technical Support before you upgrade to this EditShare release. Considerations for Using DAVE SMB (Macintosh Only) When you connect to any kind of EditShare media space using the SMB protocol, be sure to install the correct DAVE version for your OS X version. If you re upgrading OS X, be sure to uninstall DAVE before the upgrade, then install the best version for the new operating system after the upgrade. Table 1: Recommended and required DAVE versions for OS X DAVE Versions OS X Version v8.1 v9.0.2 b. 1450 v10.0.0 v10.0.x v11.0.x v12 Snow Leopard (10.6) Minimum Compatible Incompatible Recommended Incompatible Lion (10.7) Incompatible Minimum Compatible Compatible Recommended Incompatible Mountain Lion (10.8) Incompatible Minimum Compatible Recommended Incompatible Mavericks (10.9) Incompatible Minimum Recommended Yosemite (10.10) Incompatible Recommended NOTE: Check http://www.editshare.com/updates for the latest information on DAVE. While DAVE v12 is the latest approved version of DAVE as of the publication of this guide, EditShare and Thursby are constantly improving DAVE, so there might be a newer approved version by the time you read this document. All DAVE upgrades are free within the current product version. Upgrades to a new product version, such as from v8 to v9, are paid. Contact Thursby Software Systems for upgrade information or visit http://www.thursby.com/purchase/upgrades.html to handle your upgrade online. 9
SUPPORTED CLIENT VERSIONS See the following sections: "Using Approved DAVE Versions and Upgrading OS X" on page 10 "Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)" on page 10 "Lion (OS X 10.7)" on page 10 "Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8)" on page 11 "Mavericks (OS X 10.9)" on page 11 "Yosemite (OS X 10.10)" on page 11 Using Approved DAVE Versions and Upgrading OS X DAVE v9.0.2 build 1450 introduced many bug fixes, performance enhancements, and feature enhancements that directly benefit EditShare users, and DAVE v10 and newer include those improvements and more. EditShare approves specific versions of DAVE supported on OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) and newer. CAUTION: You must uninstall DAVE before upgrading OS X on your workstation. If you don t first uninstall DAVE, you cannot properly install or run DAVE on the newer version of OS X without contacting Thursby Software Systems Technical Support or reimaging your workstation. Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) EditShare recommends DAVE v9.0.2 build 1450 and DAVE v10.0.1 for use with OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x) because they resolve many important issues in Snow Leopard that were never resolved in the DAVE v8 series. On Snow Leopard, you must use DAVE v10.0.1, as it contains an important fix related to password handling when updating from earlier versions of DAVE or OS X. Thursby does not support DAVE v11 or newer on OS X Snow Leopard. Lion (OS X 10.7) Thursby Software Systems supports DAVE v9, v10, and v11 on OS X Lion (10.7). EditShare requires DAVE v9.0.2 build 1450 or newer. EditShare recommends DAVE v10.0.x or DAVE v11.0.x on Lion if your workstations will also run recent versions of Adobe Creative Suite, as DAVE 10
