2 overview jamie stanley experience training with the experts edwin cabrera 3 2013 graduate planning to enroll in physical therapy school 2008 graduate was a school principal and now studying business so he can open his own gym experience an active career Our bodies are made for motion. Studies show physical activity lowers health care costs. Yet physical inactivity happens often, brought about by injuries or sitting long hours at work. That s why health and human performance (HHP) matters. From running a company s wellness program to treating an injury as a physical therapist, experienced professionals are needed I was in the HHP department all four years at Union, and I loved every minute! One of my favorite experiences was the athletic injuries class that I took. Everything in that class pertained to what I want to do for a living as a physical therapist. It was very hands-on, going beyond the class lecture to put what we learned into practice. We actually practiced wrapping injuries and assessing our classmates who walked in the door pretending to be injured. This has been great preparation for my future. The HHP program gives you the professional training you need to succeed. You will learn from professors who are experts in their field, and the professor-to-student ratio makes it easy for you to interact with these professionals. The lead professors hold doctorates in their areas of expertise one is a physical therapist, a great resource for students who plan to go to physical therapy school. Ask questions, get feedback and experience what personal attention from your professors will do for your education. That s not all. Each month, the department hosts HHP Awareness sessions highlighting careerboosting topics such as professionalism, resume writing and graduate experiences. These sessions feature guest speakers working in the fields you want to know about: physical therapy, business sports management, education and wellness. Finally, HHP students have the opportunity to attend a yearly professional conference. Each Union College and especially the HHP department have given me the skills and tools I needed to be successful in educating and leading children to God. They loved and supported me every step of the way and continue to do so throughout my professional life. They helped me achieve my goals and become something that makes me 100% happy an educator. for educating, managing and working in a variety of settings to encourage and promote active living. year, a nominated student receives a $1000 scholarship, funded by department faculty and alumni, to attend a professional meeting like the American College of Sports Medicine or the National Conference for Physical Education.

4 experience a balanced life 5 The health and human performance team at Union knows a career dedicated to physical activity starts with the student. That s why we help you become a leader, living a balanced lifestyle while enjoying Christian fellowship. Start by getting involved outside the classroom. Volunteer opportunities allow you to serve alongside peers and professionals and put into practice the Christian values taught in class. Study with your classmates in a student lounge exclusively available to HHP majors. Then, get active. Pick from a range of athletic programs including intramural sports, varsity basketball, volleyball, golf and gymnastics. Each of these opportunities teach students sportsmanship and teamwork while encouraging an active lifestyle. The Health and Human Performance Club also encourages students to make healthy lifestyle choices while socializing with peers. Lead a balanced lifestyle as you prepare for a career in which you ll encourage others to do the same. experience the HHP advantage At Union, we understand degrees are not one size fits all. They can t be when you need education and training specific to your personal passions and career goals. That s why we offer options. You have your choice from four HHP areas: Business/sport management allows you to tailor internships to meet your specific goals; it is recommended for those who wish to run a sports-related business. Exercise science offers the undergrad equivalent to courses taken in physical therapy graduate school, preparing you to further your education toward your chosen career. Exercise science also prepares students to sit for the NCSF Personal Trainer Certification. Fitness and wellness provides practical experience on campus and an internship off campus with the opportunity to work with businesses and lead their wellness programs. Physical education prepares students to teach elementary or high school/academy physical education. Practical experiences include the teaching practicum that puts students in real classrooms. Students also gain practical experience by learning how to run intramural programs. You also have your choice from five HHP minors: business/sport management, coaching, fitness and wellness, personal training and physical education. Personalize your education to achieve your personalized goals that s the HHP advantage.

6 krystal lakoduk hauff rachel welsh huggins careers 7 1998 graduate health and human performance faculty at Union College from 2010 2013 2010 graduate now wellness manager for Union Bank and Trust in Lincoln, Neb. experience Union College It s just different here, and we mean that in a good way. Students notice the difference almost immediately, and even their families can see it without trying. We love it the difference, that is though we don t always know what to call it. What s more, we re not exactly sure what it is. But whatever it is, it s here and it s life-changing. What was most meaningful to me while I was a student in the health and human performance department was the time and effort my professors took discussing career options with me. They weren t just willing because it was part of their job; they were genuinely interested in me finding my calling by identifying my talents and seeking out career options with my interests in mind. With their guidance, support and encouragement, I not only finished an M.Ed. but went on to finish my Ph.D. as well. The HHP department provided hands-on experience in conducting wellness screenings; planning health fairs; personal training with students, faculty, and staff; and planning and coordinating a wellness program. These are all skills I have been able to use in my career. Health and human performance professionals are found in a variety of settings, including health care, education, recreational businesses and corporations. They work as leaders in promoting active lifestyles through education, management, training, coaching, therapy or any number of roles. possible career paths With a health and human performance degree from Union College, a wide range of opportunities are available to you. Here are just a few: Personal fitness trainer provides exercise prescription and instruction. Recreational business manager runs a recreation business. We are a Seventh-day Adventist school and our faith is part Wellness coordinator develops and manages fitness and wellness programs for organizations. of it. You don t have to be an Adventist to attend here, and Public health professional works to prevent disease and promote health at the societal level. we think you ll like our focus on you as a whole person your learning experience, your health and your relationships. So for lack of a better word (anything s better than it), we call it the Spirit. Physical education teacher teaches heath, wellness and athletics to elementary or secondary students. Coach develops, instructs and prepares a team to participate in a sports league. Or earn a graduate degree and work as: Physical therapist treats injuries with exercise and other physical treatments. Come experience it. Experience the Spirit. Exercise physiologist studies how exercise affects all areas of the body. Sports medicine professional treats injuries resulting from athletic activities.
