Studies show physical activity lowers health care costs. Yet physical inactivity happens often, brought about by injuries or sitting long hours at work. That s why health and human performance (HHP) matters. From running a company s wellness program to treating an injury as a physical therapist, experienced professionals are needed I was in the HHP department all four years at Union, and I loved every minute! One of my favorite experiences was the athletic injuries class that I took. Everything in that class pertained to what I want to do for a living as a physical therapist. It was very hands-on, going beyond the class lecture to put what we learned into practice. We actually practiced wrapping injuries and assessing our classmates who walked in the door pretending to be injured. This has been great preparation for my future. The HHP program gives you the professional training you need to succeed. You will learn from professors who are experts in their field, and the professor-to-student ratio makes it easy for you to interact with these professionals. The lead professors hold doctorates in their areas of expertise one is a physical therapist, a great resource for students who plan to go to physical therapy school. Ask questions, get feedback and experience what personal attention from your professors will do for your education. That s not all. Each month, the department hosts HHP Awareness sessions highlighting careerboosting topics such as professionalism, resume writing and graduate experiences. These sessions feature guest speakers working in the fields you want to know about: physical therapy, business sports management, education and wellness. Finally, HHP students have the opportunity to attend a yearly professional conference. Each Union College and especially the HHP department have given me the skills and tools I needed to be successful in educating and leading children to God. They loved and supported me every step of the way and continue to do so throughout my professional life. They helped me achieve my goals and become something that makes me 100% happy an educator. for educating, managing and working in a variety of settings to encourage and promote active living. year, a nominated student receives a $1000 scholarship, funded by department faculty and alumni, to attend a professional meeting like the American College of Sports Medicine or the National Conference for Physical Education.

Students notice the difference almost immediately, and even their families can see it without trying. We love it the difference, that is though we don t always know what to call it. What s more, we re not exactly sure what it is. But whatever it is, it s here and it s life-changing. What was most meaningful to me while I was a student in the health and human performance department was the time and effort my professors took discussing career options with me. They weren t just willing because it was part of their job; they were genuinely interested in me finding my calling by identifying my talents and seeking out career options with my interests in mind. With their guidance, support and encouragement, I not only finished an M.Ed. but went on to finish my Ph.D. as well. The HHP department provided hands-on experience in conducting wellness screenings; planning health fairs; personal training with students, faculty, and staff; and planning and coordinating a wellness program. These are all skills I have been able to use in my career.
