Survey of International Business This seminar provides an overview of the field of international business. Topics covered include: Macro-Environmental Aspects Andrew Spicer International trade and investment International monetary systems Global and regional organizations Government policies National cultures Micro-Managerial Aspects International finance International marketing International strategy and management International corporate social responsibility and ethics Through these seminars, faculty will achieve an understanding of current events and developments in the global economy, their effects, and how to incorporate them into the courses they teach. Instructed by a Team of Outstanding Faculty Andrew Spicer, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of international business in the Moore School s Sonoco International Business Department, and coordinator of the Survey of International Business program. He received his Ph.D. from the Wharton School and previously taught at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Business, University of California, Riverside. His research focuses on organizational and institutional change in post-communist economies. International Management Participants gain substantive knowledge of international management with a focus on the management of multinational corporations (MNCs). The seminar addresses the typical organizational and managerial issues faced by MNCs, such as the balance between global integration and local responsiveness, the challenges of building good relationships between parent companies and foreign subsidiaries, and success factors for international managers careers. Emphasis is placed on the topic of national culture and its effects on international management as well as on the pedagogical challenges of teaching culture. International Negotiations Nancy Buchan This was a great experience. It has provided me with numerous ideas on how I can improve courses I teach. Doug Crawford, Assistant Professor, Wilson College Negotiating across countries and cultures adds significant complexity to the process of negotiation not every culture negotiates in the same manner or from the same strategic perspective. This seminar will examine an effective negotiation framework for doing business in cross-national/cultural contexts. The framework considers how bargainer characteristics and situational factors influence negotiation processes which, in turn, impact negotiation outcomes. $500 CIBER Scholarship The Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) offers a limited number of $500 scholarships for the program. Scholarships will be granted based on an application process and review by the University of South Carolina CIBER administration. Applicants for the scholarships are required to make a $500 deposit prior to admission. If an applicant is not granted a scholarship and chooses to cancel his/her registration, the deposit is fully refundable providing a refund is requested at least 14 days prior to program start.
