The Department of English Studies The Department of English Studies is a part of the Philological Faculty at the University of Szczecin. It is the Institution which employs 30 Polish and foreign instructors who graduated from English Philology Departments. The head of the Department is dr Anna Gonerko-Frej. We offer BA and MA programme of studies, both for full time and part time students. 2.1. Research The Department of English is a research-educational institution. Facilities The Department of English has a quite well prepared teaching base for its students. All the lecture halls are equipped with indispensable facilities i.e. videos, cassette recorders, OHPs, photocopying machine for students and teachers use, and the library which provides essential materials to complete the studies. In the library there is access to two computers for students use. In May 2004, the British Cultural Studies section inaugurated their new multimedia language laboratory. The room is equipped with a multimedia projector, computer, DVD/ video and cassette recorder, amplifier, 16 students desks and the cabin for simultaneous interpretation. The audio and video sources are incorporated in the teacher s control unit. The system installed allows for one-way monitoring as well as two-way communication between teacher and student, it integrates all the functions essential for an Audio-Active-Comparative language laboratory. The on-line connection allows the immediate access to the Internet and creates new possibilities for the inclusion of contemporary materials.

3. Grading System In order to get the allocated credits, students are obliged to get passing grades from all the subjects, and they are supposed to do that in prescribed time for each semester. The forms of assessment are given in the course descriptions. Students are also required to pass all the exams that are listed in the syllabus to graduate from the English Department. Exams also have to be taken in the prescribed time. A student who was refused a signature or who failed the exam has a chance to take it one more time during the re-sit examination session. If he/she fails again he /she has a right to appeal to the director of the English Department who may decide about another exam. This exam will be carried out by a committee whose members are appointed by the director of the Department. At University there functions the following system of grades: Grade Description 5 very good (student has mastered the selected material very well) 4+ some elements of the grade above and below 4 good (student mastered the material quite well, some minor mistakes can occur) 3+ some elements of the grade above and below 3 satisfactory (student fulfils the minimal criteria) 2 failed (student is refused the credit points) Some subjects end without a grade, only with the signature of the teacher and the indication pass ( zal in Polish).
