Worksheet 2 Animal Birth Registration All calves must be tagged within 20 days of birth. Within 7 days of tagging all calf births must be registered with the Cattle Movement Monitoring System (CMMS). The farmer must apply to register the birth and to allow a cattle identity card/passport to be issued. In order to complete this form correctly the farmer must be aware of the abbreviations used for the different breeds. Do you know what an abbreviation is? It is using letters in place of words. Cattle Abbreviations AA: Aberdeen Angus LM: Limousin BA: Blonde D Aquitaine MO: Montbeliarde BB: Belgian Blue PI: Piedmontese CH: Charolais FR: Friesian RM: Romagnola HE: Hereford SH: Shorthorn KE: Kerry SI: Simmental 1

Farmers need to know the abbreviations for their breed of cattle or those cattle they are likely to breed or buy. Many cattle are not purebred. These are identified by the letter X put in after the abbreviation. For example a Hereford Cross cow is identified by the letters HEX HE for Hereford and X for Cross. Try writing out the following cattle types in abbreviation form. Simmental Aberdeen Angus Charolais Cross Belgian Blue Friesian Cross Hereford Picture of Cow 2
