Teaching Philosophy I plan to make a positive connection with students in order to inspire them to obtain knowledge and to provide excellent care to their patients. I want students to realize vast opportunities provided by a career in Nursing. I believe the most important values include quality care, trust, autonomy, advocacy, accountability, knowledge, and inquiry. Through a holistic approach, I will educate future nursing students of the value these concepts will have in their own practices. I believe Nursing faculty should instruct and model ethical behavior and professional accountability. Faculty must live their scope and standards of practice. I believe that effective teachers establish an inviting, learning environment that promotes collaboration among themselves and their students for achievement of educational goals. I will focus on providing learning experiences that support evidence-based practice, thereby teaching students how to provide quality care to patients. My teaching framework also includes the use of Boyer s Scholarship of Engagement which includes the phases of discovery, integration, application and teaching. I believe the utilization of this theory in my teaching practice will enhance student knowledge as well as teacher effectiveness. I recognize the uniqueness and cultural diversity of each student as a quality that should be fostered and shared in the classroom to increase both instructor and student understanding. I want my students to learn how to think critically. I understand that learning occurs when new information is integrated into existing knowledge structures and students vary in their baseline knowledge. Therefore, I offer a variety of learning tools for students such as a list of further readings that are not required, but offer different perspectives. I also try to connect new ideas that are presented with content from previous lectures. I have high expectations in terms of academic standards. I help students meet those standards by encouraging and congratulating students when they understand the material and subsequently raising the level of discourse. I am eager to provide extensive feedback on assignments and I am available to meet for guidance. Student s progress should be recognized and I make an explicit attempt to do so.
