CURRICULUM B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication ORDINANCES: 1. The nomenclature of the Bachelor Degree Course will be B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication. The duration of this course shall be of three years (i.e. three academic sessions). 2. The Medium of Instruction : The medium of Instruction will be both Hindi and English. 3. The Medium of Examination : The medium of examination will be either Hindi or English. 4. Eligibility to apply for Admission : Any candidate who have passed Intermediate or 10 + 2 examinations at least with 45% marks will be eligible to apply for admission to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication. 5. Admission Procedure : 1. Admission to the course will be held on the basis of Academic Merit or Merit of Combined Written Entrance Test conducted by the university. 2. The entrance test will be of 200 marks and will include following papers- (a) General Knowledge & Current Awareness, (b) Language Proficiency (Hindi and English). 3. The entrance test fee will be deposited in the university account. Expenses of the test and external experts will be met by the University. 4. Admission on the basis of Academic Merit may be made if the University finds it convenient or as per its policy.
5. The admission procedure will be uniform for all the Study Centre. 6. The nature of the admission procedure will be decided by the Convener of Board of Studies in Mass Communication, Dean of the Faculty after the approval of the Vice Chancellor of the University. 6. Reservation: The reservation will be as per Uttarakhand Government Rules as followed by the University. 7. Intake: The intake of candidate to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication Course should be exceed 40 candidates at any Study Centre. The intake for the Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication will be 40 candidates while the intake for other Study Centres will be as per approval of the State Government after the recommendation of the concerning affiliating panel which may be less than 40 but should not exceed 40. 8. Fee and Resource Generation: Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication, University Campus, Srinagar (Garhwal): I. Every candidate selected for the admission to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication shall have to pay Campus Admission and Monthly fee as scheduled for other Bachelor Degree Courses of the Campus of respective faculty for each year. II. In addition to the normal fee (Campus Admission & Monthly fee) as mentioned above, all the candidates will have to pay Rs. 2000/= (Two Thousand) as Practical and Profession fee as special contribution for development of practical facilities and professional efficiency including Guest Lectures.
III. Before depositing Campus Admission and Monthly fee, the candidate must deposit the Practical and Profession fee at the Centre for Journalism and Mass Communicaiton. IV. The above fee structure (point 1,2 & 3) will not be applicable for the Selffinanced Affiliated Study Centres. V. The fee structure of the Self-financed Study Centres shall be fixed by the respective Study Centres/Institutes after the approval of the State Government following the University procedure as per norms. 9. Pass Marks and Division: 1. The minimum pass marks in each theory paper and Internal should be 40% separately. If a student fails in theory (external) or internal examination of any paper then he/she will be treated failed in the concerning paper. 2. The minimum pass marks in practical and viva should be 40%. 3. The candidate should secure 45% marks in aggregate for passing the annual examination. 4. The candidate securing 45% marks in aggregate of all the three years but below 60% shall be declared to have passed in second division while the candidate securing 60% marks or more in aggregate shall be declared to have passed in first division. 5. The student will have to pass separately in internal assessment, theory and practical. 6. The internal/external marks ratio will be generally uniform for all papers as 25/75. 7. Internal marks will be forwarded to the University by the Study Centres at least 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the annual examination. 8. Distinction is to be mentioned if a candidate obtains a total of 75% marks or more in aggregate in a single attempt (without the award of grace marks to pass in any paper). 10. Grace Marks:
In each year a candidate can be awarded Grace Marks of not more than 5% of the theory marks, if he/she fails in only one theory paper but obtains the minimum aggregate marks required for passing without considering the Grace Marks. Grace Marks will not be awarded for internal assessment. (As per University direction if the 5% marks work out to be a fraction/decimal it will be rounded off to the next higher number e.g. 1.25 to be rounded off as 02 marks). 11. Number of Back Papers/Improvement Permitted: 1. Maximum two back papers/improvement will be allowed for one academic year. In case if a candidate fails in the annual examination he/she will have to pass back papers/improvement examination in order to get admission in the next class. 2. If a candidate fails in internal examination but secure pass marks in external (theory) examination of a paper then he/she should have to appear again for passing the both internal and external (theory) examination of the concerning paper, which will be treated as one back paper. 3. If students secure pass marks in internal examination of any paper but fails in external (theory) examination then he/she will have to appear only in external (theory) examination of the same paper, which will be treated as one back paper. 4. Candidates are allowed only one attempt in back papers. If a candidate fails in back paper examination also then he/she will have to pass all papers of the concerning academic year as ex-student. Without passing the examination of a year a candidate cannot be allowed for admission to the next year. 5. Candidate who have already passed the papers, but wishing to improve their performance can also appear in two back paper (theory) for improvement. 6. Candidates who have already passed the internal examinations shall not be permitted for back paper/improvement in internals. 7. When a candidate secures marks less then those obtained in the first attempt (applicable in case of improvement, not failure candidate) the best of the two marks will be considered for the purpose of the final results. Theory and practical shall be considered as separate papers, but where a paper consists of both theory
and practical, it will be treated as one paper. Hence a candidate can appear as an ex-student in practical/theory of both, as the case may be. In case of back, position in merit list will not be included. 8. Each of the theory paper and practical will be treated separately for back paper examination. 12. Maximum duration for completion of the course: An additional period of 02 year will be given to a student to complete B.A. (Honors) Mass Communication course in continuation if required. For example if the batch is of 2004 2007, then it should be completed till 2009. 13. Course Structure: Each year of B.A. (Honors) Mass Communication will have six papers. Each paper will be of 100 marks. Out of these 75 marks will be for theory (external examination) and 25 marks for internal assessment. Besides these papers it will be obligatory for the students to qualify a compulsory paper of Environmental sciences in order to meet the requirement of the direction of the Hon ble Supreme Court and the subsequent order of the UGC, New Delhi otherwise Degree will not be awarded. This paper will be of 100 marks and is included with the course of IInd year.

PAPER II: REPORTING AND EDITING 1 (Th.75 + 1A 25) News: Definition, news values, sources of news, news gathering methods. Reporting: :Principles of reporting, functions and responsibilities, writing news lead types of lead; body- technique of rewriting news agency copy. I Reporting : reporting techniques qualities of a reporter news-elements, sources types pitfalls and problems in reporting attribution off-the-record embargo pool reporting; follow-up advocacy, interpretation, investigation. II Reporting crime, court, society, culture, politics, commerce and business, education reporting; practical. V Editing: Definition, nature and need for editing: Principles of editing, editorial desk, functions of editorial desk, copy editing, preparation of copy for press style sheet editing symbols, proofreading symbols and their significance. Headlining principles, types and techniques. Function and qualification of a sub-editor and chief sub editor, copy selection and copy pasting, basic principle of translation. I Practical of reporting and editing.
PAPER III: WRITING FOR MASS MEDIA (Th. 75 +1A 25) Historical background of writing elements of language writing as coding of contents language for mediated communication. I Principles and methods of effective writing, rules of grammar, Sentence construction, paragraphing, narration; adjectives and adverb, tenses, sequence, logic. II Creating in writing features, articles, profiles, interview stories business writing, technical writing, letters. V Writing for target groups, special interest audiences. Translation techniques media reviews of arts, performing arts and cinema; practical exercises applicable to all units. Data Processing Concepts Data and information, data concepts, stages of data processing. PAPER IV: INDIAN CONSTITUTION AND MEDIA LAWS (Th. 75 +1A 25) Introduction of Indian Constitution, characteristics, preamble- directives of state policy, fundamental rights, fundamental duties, citizenship. I The Legislature- the Executives- the Cabinet- the Judiciary- powers and functions; The President, union list, concurrent list, emergency declaration, separation of powers.

I Introduction to MS-Windows, features, concept of OLE; MS-Office and its applications; MS-Word with features, proofing tools, text formatting, working with graphics and web pages; MS-EXCEL with features working with formulas, working with graphs and chart, setting up worksheets for printing; Power pointdesign templates; notes, handouts and masters. Like other theory papers, this will also be evaluated by external examiner.

PAPER- XV: INDIAN GOVERNMENT, POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (Th.75 + IA 25) Government making, working of federalism, issued in government at state and central levels of state autonomy in India. Politics at the district level Panchayati Raj, election and governance. I Nature of the party system: Study of the major national parties and of some of the more important regional parties, and their social bases; effects of fragmentation of parties on the formation and working of government at the centre and the states. II The electoral system process stresses and strains; secularism and communication in India problems and trends, center- state relations, and reports on center- sate relations. V A course on Indian government and politics must address itself to the most fundamental problems of our society in an attempt to understand the reasons behind their existence and the seeming indifference, general study of government in states and their performance since independence.

PAPER- XVI : DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION (Th 75 +IA 25) Concept of development; development indicators, approaches to development; dilemmas of development policy, development planning. I Development journalism - concept -relevance; development communication meaning -strategies in development communication-dominant paradigm its critique II Social culture and economic barriers to development communication approaches to development ; use of media and inter-personal communication ;channels for development ;case studies in India context. V Participatory model mechanistic and organic models of development for communication; diffusion of innovation, extension, dependency, Gandhian model. Creation of development message-language, context, social environment, areas of rural development, health, population,agriculture, Pachayati Raj; campaigns and their evaluation - case studies in India context. PAPER XVII: SPORTS JOURNALISM (Th. 75 + IA 25) A brief history of sports journalism; a study of the sports pages of leading India dailies and well known sports magazines; sports news,sports features, curtain raisers, sports pictures, their kinds and editing; profile of sports stars; special supplements, covering important meets and international sports events; ethics of sports writing ; pictorial essays; special columns; round-up; weekly or fortnightly columns; human interest stories; importance of rules and laws, the
laws, the place and importance of umpiring ; organization of sports departments sports coverage on AIR and Doordarshan; planning design & layout. The qualities for sports writers; facilities; task of organizers, coach s compilation of statistics, reference materials: Indian and International sports awards. PAPER XVIII: JOURNALISM PRACTICAL & VIVA - VOCE (100 Marks) The students shall carry assignment in reporting, feature and editorial writing, sub - editing, proof reading and periodical work during the session. The students should also maintain a record file of the work done during the session and all this will be evaluated by external and internal examiners together. Class room attendance, behavior and team work are also included in it. Field and Institutional Visits: The students are requiring going on extensive field visits pertain to the practical assignment. Besides these 15 days Institutional visits Print Media / Electronic Media / Advertising / Public Relation establishment are expected from the students.the students are required to prepare detailed reports of such visits for the presentation at the time of viva - voice for evaluation. This will be of 20 marks (out of total 100 Marks).
