A Word From The Dean The rise of European polytechnic institutions educating students in engineering disciplines went hand in hand with the needs to build and operate military structures and with engineering activities aimed at military operations. In this respect, it is quite logical that the oldest autonomous branch of these polytechnics was the art of building and cartography. The Faculty of Civil Engineering may, therefore, boast of its longest history ranking by the number of students and other parameters of its performance among the largest faculties of the Czech Technical University in Prague. It represents a modern institution of higher education, continuously enhancing its offer of study branches, both by their composition and the content of courses taught. Students are equipped with the latest theoretic knowledge, professional skills and are taught to master the necessary practical capabilities which they need for their future professions so that they will be able to apply them in practice and further extend them through their creative activities. They have a choice of studying in accredited Bachelor, follow-up Master and doctoral degree full-time study programmes, with some programmes being taught in English. Numerous opportunities to complete part of their studies abroad, mainly in European countries, are open for them. There, they become familiar with a new environment, establish contacts and deepen their language skills, so required in today s world. The Faculty also offers courses of life-long education. Our graduates are traditionally in great demand in engineering practice as they possess a solid theoretical background, professional competences and developed creative abilities. This is, above all, due to the fact that the Faculty has always taken consistent care of the development and continuity of the academic community. The dynamic growth of the Faculty is testified by newly appointed young associate professors and professors. New branches are launched in the educational sphere, the funds granted for scientific, research and development activity, which is firmly linked to pedagogic activity, mainly in the doctoral degree study, have been rising. The effort to establish close links with the industrial sector, not only in economic activity, is another Faculty tradition. The number of joint research projects performed with the participation of Industry has been growing where the Faculty acts as an advisor assisting Industry and public administration in solving issues of current priority. The city of Prague offers students extra opportunities in the civil engineering field already during their studies. Companies like Metrostav or Skanska have introduced a system of care of the students who show interest in their future career growth within these companies. This adds another dimension to their study. I firmly believe that also thanks to this option, studies at the Faculty will continue to attract talented and high-quality students now and in the future. prof. Ing. Alena Kohoutková, CSc. Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague 3

Research workplaces Research is traditionally aimed not only at theoretical and analytical fields, but, with the help of an advanced experimental base, research and testing of materials for structural elements is carried out as well, from the nano level all the way to full scale structures. Science & Research Science is a mission at CTU Research and development, or artistic creative activity (R&D) is at the forefront of the CTU mission. CTU aspires to become one of the greatest research institutions in the Czech Republic; its programme is to reach a status of internationally renowned university of research type. Research and development are closely linked to teaching, mainly in doctoral and Master degree study programmes. The organizational and thematic structure of R&D results, above all, from the orientation of the departments and autonomous workplaces. In this respect, research plans and some grant projects solved in mutual cooperation of several workplaces represent an important integrating factor. External cooperation with other universities, institutes of the Academy of Sciences CR, ministry institutions, enterprises and foreign institutions is also of great significance. The thematic focus of research and development is dictated by contemporary research trends in the construction industry which stem from the priority thematic fields of research within the framework of the European research community, and the National policy of research and development of the Czech Republic. Effective research for practice A common theme of our cutting-edge research is a focus towards innovations in the area of new materials, structures and technologies with respect to their durability and reliability within their life cycle, and the application of a complex perspective that implies an understanding of the interaction between buildings and their environment. These research activities are carried out within the framework of research projects supported by the Czech Science Foundation CR, the Academy of Sciences CR and individual ministries grants, the European Union and the construction industry. Direct international cooperation is implemented through projects of the 7 th EU General Framework Programme, COST, Nanocem and others.
