AHRC New York City Internship Opportunities Contents: Introduction Training Adult Day Services Home Care Services, Inc. Department of Educational Services Medical and Clinical Services Residential Services Recreation Services Administration and General Introduction There are many exciting internship opportunities at AHRC New York City. Internships are offered through various universities primarily in or around New York City, such as Columbia University, NYU, Hunter College, Fordham University, St. John's University, as well as Duke University in North Carolina. The goal of the Internship Program at AHRC NYC is to provide educationally sound placements so that the organization can introduce students to the challenges faced by persons with developmental disabilities, and attract talented, dedicated professionals to the field. AHRC NYC offers interns the opportunity to work with individuals of all ages who have varying degrees of developmental delays and disabilities. Whether providing services to preschool children, adolescents, adults, or senior citizens, Interns will be working alongside AHRC NYC staff who are knowledgeable about the best practices used in the field. Training By taking part in the Internship Program at AHRC NYC, Interns will gain hands on experience providing services to individuals with disabilities and related services in the field. Interns will also have the opportunity to take part in both general and program specific training sessions offered at AHRC New York City. Adult Day Services All Adult Day Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Undergraduate Internships Work with groups and individuals as they take part in daily program activities and including trips in the community Help individuals improve their ability to interact with others Help individuals accomplish designated tasks Help individuals achieve specified educational and behavioral goals Social Work Interns Work with groups and individuals on attaining specified goals Take part in identifying and addressing educational and behavioral needs Help individuals acquire or strengthen the skills necessary for self-regulation and emotional stability Assist individuals in the development of appropriate socialization skills May interact with families and other programs Maintain case notes Psychology Interns Conduct adaptive functioning and intelligence testing Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings Participate in functional assessments of behavior and the development of behavior plans Provide individual counseling Facilitate groups focused on cognitive, behavioral goals such as anger management and socialization Maintain concise and well written case notes Complete assessments and reports in a timely fashion Speech Therapy Interns Work with individuals and groups in order to achieve identified goals Work with members of the interdisciplinary team to maximize the gains made during therapy Maintain session notes May assist in the assessment of individuals who may need speech therapy May take part in training sessions that center on the development and enhancement of speech and language Occupational Therapy Interns Work with individuals and groups in order to achieve identified goals

Home Care Services, Inc. All Home Care Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Social Work Interns Work with developmentally delayed individuals in achieving identified goals; Conduct assessments, identify, and address needs Help the individuals to acquire the skills necessary for self-regulation, improved family and social functioning, dealing with frustration, increasing independence, and functioning effectively in the community Help family members develop routines, learn effective strategies for discipline, and learn appropriate responses to challenging behaviors Contact and work collaboratively with other programs on achieving goals Maintain case notes Fulfill agency documentation requirements.

Department of Educational Services All Educational Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Preschool Teacher Interns Take part in implementing IEP's and the goals discussed at the child study team meetings Work with the teachers in developing lesson and unit plans and later take the lead in developing plans and in presenting lessons Employ educational strategies that are appropriate to the type and degree of the developmental disability of the students Social Work Interns Work with the team to assist the students' families in obtaining necessary services and in incorporating educational and behavioral goals into family life Facilitate parent support groups and parent training sessions Work with individual parents, and provide outreach to families that are difficult to engage Represent the families' needs and concerns to the child study team Conduct interviews to update social histories and conduct initial social history interviews Interns may facilitate play therapy with the students Special Education Internships Elementary, Middle & High School teachers Conduct discrete trials using ABA and other similar teaching approaches Provide academic or vocational instruction Provide training in activities of daily living Work with the teachers in developing lesson and unit plans and later taking the lead in developing and presenting lesson plans Music Therapy Interns in Special Education Schools Help integrate music into classroom lesson plans Take the lead in presenting music based lesson Assist staff in incorporating music into classroom activities Work with groups and with individual children to help them use music to acquire the skills necessary for self-regulation and emotional stability Work with classes and groups to help students prepare musical presentations for graduation and special occasions Conduct instructional groups for parents to help them integrate the strategies of music therapy into home life Art Therapist Interns in Special Education Schools

Help to integrate art into lesson plans Take the lead in presenting art based lessons Help the staff to incorporate art into classroom activities Work with groups and individual students to help them use art to acquire the skills necessary for self-regulation and emotional stability Work with groups and classes to help them prepare material for presentation Conduct instructional groups for parents to help them incorporate the strategies of art therapy into home life School Psychology Interns Work with individual students and with groups of students on attaining IEP goals and the goals identified by the child study teams Work with the psychologist, teachers, and therapists in developing effective classroom strategies Assist in performing functional analyses and developing behavior plans Maintain session notes May have the opportunity to participate in and facilitate parent training sessions May assist in the assessment of students who may need psychological services School Speech Therapy Interns Work with individual students and groups of students on achieving IEP goals Work with the teachers and other members of the interdisciplinary teams in employing strategies that help the students maximize the gains made during therapy Maintain session notes Assist in the assessment of students who may need speech therapy Maintain concise log notes Take part in parent training sessions that focus on the development of speech and language Occupational Therapy Interns in Special Education Schools Work with individual students and groups of students on achieving IEP goals Work with the teachers and other members of the interdisciplinary teams in employing strategies that help the students maximize the gains made during therapy Maintain session notes Assist in the assessment of students who may need occupational therapy Take part in parent training sessions that center on the development of fine motor skills Physical Therapy Interns in Special Education Schools Work with individual students and groups of students on achieving IEP goals Work with the teachers and other members of the interdisciplinary teams in employing strategies that help the students maximize the gains made during therapy Maintain session notes Assist in the assessment of students who may need physical therapy

Medical and Clinical Services All Medical and Clinical Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Psychology Interns Conduct psychological evaluations Provide treatment to individuals in the AHRC NYC Article 16 clinic Provide psychological consultation in the clinic and to AHRC NYC programs as needed Take part in case conferences Maintain case notes Meet agency paperwork requirements. Social work Interns Conduct psychosocial report interviews for the Article 16 Clinic, Sobriety Services, and the Health Care Clinic Provide treatment to people with developmental disabilities Take part in case conferences Maintain written case notes Consult with other programs and with family members as needed

Residential Services All Residential Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Undergraduate Interns Assist individuals in activities of daily living Help individuals to take part in daily routines Help individuals improve their ability to interact with others Help individuals to accomplish designated tasks Take part in community trips and work with individuals to acquire appropriate skills for interacting in the community

Recreation Services All Recreational Services Interns will be required to: attend AHRC NYC's OSHA training, have medical clearance, be fingerprinted, have state clearance. Social Work Interns Administrative Track Visit the recreation programs Take part in quality assurance and audit procedures Perform administrative tasks as directed by the Director of the department Take part in intake and assessments or people with developmental disabilities Maintain concise log notes Comply with agency paperwork requirements Social Work Interns Work on already identified goals Provide assessment and establish goals Help individuals develop appropriate socialization skills Help individuals to acquire the skills for self-regulation and decision making Help individuals develop independence Be in contact with other programs Keep concise case notes and contact logs

Administration and General Finance Department Interns Assist with organization of accounts payable files Organize payroll cancelled checks Upload information into Excel worksheets Assist in the design of departmental forms Verify the accuracy of data entry Maintain worksheets Assist unit staff with eligibility processing Assist with year-end reconciliation and paperwork Assist with budget data input Perform other tasks that are assigned by the Chief Financial Officer
