Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) 2010-2011 IGETC Standards 1.1 www.ccctransfer.org The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses prospective transfer students attending California Community Colleges may complete to satisfy the lower division breadth/general education requirements at both the University of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU). It was developed to simplify the transfer process. If you choose to follow IGETC, you must complete it before you transfer; otherwise you will be required to satisfy the specific lower division general education requirements of the college or school at the UC or CSU campus you attend. All IGETC coursework does not have to be completed at the same college. Courses taken at more than one California Community College may be used to fulfill IGETC. However, courses taken at other California Community Colleges are counted only in the area(s) where they are listed for that college. See the Applying Courses section for details. IGETC is most helpful if you want to keep your options open you know you want to transfer but have not yet decided upon a particular institution, campus or major. Certain students, however, are not well served by following IGETC. If you intend to transfer into a major that requires extensive lower division preparation, such as engineering or the physical and natural sciences, you should concentrate on completing the many major prerequisites for which the college screens to determine eligibility for admission. See IGETC Exceptions section. The Pierce counselors or a CSU/UC admissions representative can give you additional information about IGETC and advise you on which path is best for you. IGETC is not an admissions requirement. Completing it is not required, nor does it guarantee admission to the campus or program of choice. However, completing the lower division breadth/general education requirements through IGETC or the campus-specific requirements (depending upon the program) may improve your chances for admission to a competitive campus and/or program. Associate Degree Information An Associate Degree is not a requirement for transfer to the CSU or UC campuses. Completing the Associate Degree does not necessarily meet the university-admission requirements for transfer to the CSU or UC campuses. Private and out-of-state colleges and universities have unique transfer requirements. However, if you would like to transfer to a university and earn an associate degree, early educational planning can make this goal achievable. You should meet with a counselor early in your studies to develop an Educational Plan that fulfills both transfer requirements and associate degree requirements. Minimum Unit Requirement A course must have a minimum unit value of 3 semester or 4 quarter units to meet the requirements for IGETC. It is not acceptable to take three 1-unit-courses to fulfill a 3-unit requirement because as a rule three 1-unit-courses will not together provide the depth or rigor of a single 3-unit course. Exceptions: 1. Laboratory courses intended to accompany lecture courses. 2. 3-quarter-unit Math and English courses may be applied to IGETC Areas 1A or 2 if they are part of a sequence. See a Pierce Counselor for details. Combining Quarter and Semester Units When combining quarter and semester unit values within an IGETC area, units shall be converted to either all quarter units or all semester units to best serve the student. For example, in Social/Behavioral Sciences (Area 4), a student needs either a minimum of 9 semester units or 12 quarter units. If a student takes one 4 quarter unit course and two 3 semester unit courses, convert the semester units to quarter units (6 units x 1.5 quarter units=9 quarter units). The student will be credited with 13 quarter units in Area 4 and has satisfied the requirement. Minimum Grade Requirement A minimum C grade is required in each college course for IGETC. A C is defined as a minimum of 2.0 grade points on a 4.0 scale. A C minus grade valued at less than 2.0 grade points on a 4.0 scale cannot be used for IGETC certification. Language Other Than English High School Grade Exception: For the UC Language Other Than English requirement, IGETC Area 6A, the University of California does not count minus or plus grades for high school coursework, only the whole grade is used. In other words, a C- grade is counted as a C. Example: A student receiving C- grades in high school Spanish 1 and 2 meets the language proficiency requirement. Pass/No Pass-Credit/No Credit Courses in which a student receives a pass grade may be used for IGETC if the college s policy states that a pass designation is equivalent to a C grade (2.0 grade points on a 4.0 scale) or better, which it is at Pierce College. The UC system allows a maximum of 14 semester units on a Pass/No Pass (Credit/No Credit) basis of the 60 transferable semester units required for admission.

There is no system-wide policy for CSU campuses. Therefore, each campus has established its own policy on limitations of courses transferred with grades of credit. See the CSU Student Academic Support website: www.calstate.edu/ar/couselors.shtml, under Counselors and Educators, for information. Applying Courses Courses may be used only once to satisfy one IGETC subject area, even if they are listed in the course agreement under more than one subject area. Courses may be used to satisfy both IGETC and major requirements. Warning: Many students attend multiple California Community College campuses. If that s you, be sure to follow the IGETC at each college of attendance. IGETC policy states that IGETC coursework completed in a specific subject area will be used in the area designated by the California Community College at which the course was completed. This is also the policy if you complete courses at more than one of the LACCD campuses. You must follow the IGETC of each campus you attend. For example, English 102 at Pierce College fulfills IGETC Area 1B but at Valley College, English 102 fulfills IGETC Area 3B. The course will be applied to the IGETC Area of the school where it was taken. Students cannot choose where to place a course. Instructional Televisions Courses (ITV) must be listed on LA Mission s IGETC to receive credit for an IGETC subject area. Coursework completed for IGETC will be honored provided that the course was on the college s approved IGETC list when it was completed. The IGETC is updated at the beginning of each academic year. For all IGETC information, including current and prior course histories, consult the Assist website at www.assist.org Certification It is your responsibility to petition for IGETC certification before you transfer. Once you have finished your IGETC coursework, the Pierce Graduation Office will help you with your petition. Certification of IGETC completion is the responsibility of the last California Community College you attend prior to transfer. Only California Community Colleges may certify completion of IGETC. Use of External Exams on IGETC There is no limit on the number of external exams that can be applied to IGETC. Use of External Exam credit for admissions purposes: Actual external exam transfer credit awarded for admission for the exams listed in this section along with additional exams is determined by the CSU and UC. The UC Policy for external exam credit can be found in the publication Quick Reference for Counselors at: www. universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/ adminfo/freshman/advising/credit/aptest.html. Complete details of the official CSU External Exam Policy can be found on CSU Chancellor s website: http://www.calstate. edu/app/general-ed-transfer.shtml Use of AP Exams: A score of 3, 4, or 5 is required to grant credit for IGETC certification. An acceptable AP score for IGETC equates to either 3 semester or 4 quarter units for certification purposes. Each AP exam may be applied to one IGETC area as satisfying one course requirement, with the exception of Language other Than English (LOTE). Students who have earned credit from an AP exam should not take a comparable college course because transfer credit will not be granted for both. Students earning scores of 3, 4, or 5 in the physical and biological science AP examinations earn credit toward IGETC Area 5 and meet the IGETC laboratory activity requirement. There is no equivalent AP exam for Area 1B- Critical Thinking/ Composition requirement. AP exams in Biology, Chemistry or Physics B allow CCC campuses to apply 4 semester or 5 quarter units to IGETC certification. For Environmental Science, Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity/Magnetism, 3 semester or 4 quarter units are applied for IGETC certification; therefore, students who complete these exams will be required to complete at least 4 semester or 5 quarter units to satisfy the minimum required units for Area 5. Use of External Exams (continued) * Note regarding Score of 3 on either English AP exam:current Pierce College policy will not allow students who scored a 3 on either of the English Advanced Placement exams to progress to IGETC Area 1B: Critical Thinking and English Composition. Students who scored a 3 on either of these exams have the following options for completing the IGETC Area 1B requirement: 1. Take a course to meet IGETC 1B at any of the other eight campuses in the LACCD. All eight campuses will allow students who score 3 or higher on either of the English AP exams to enroll in an IGETC 1B course. West Los Angeles has online courses available that satisfy IGETC 1B. See the Applying Courses section of this document for details. OR 2. On a case-by-case basis, students who scored a 3 can meet with the Pierce English Department Chair or their designee, and complete a written assignment. The English faculty member will determine whether the completed assignment demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a course(s) requiring English 101 as a prerequisite. At the faculty members discretion, they can clear the student to enroll in a course that meets IGETC 1B. OR 3. Students who scored a 3 may choose to enroll in English 101 at Pierce. However, the UC and CSU campuses may not grant unit or course credit for English 101. The IGETC Standards v1.1 states: Students who have earned credit from an AP exam should not take a comparable college course because transfer credit will not be granted for both. Students cannot choose which they want credit for, the AP exam or the course. The university will give credit for what was first passed. In this case, it will be the AP exam. Use of International Baccalaureate (IB) exams on IGETC: A score of 5, 6 or 7 on Higher Level exams is required to grant credit for IGETC certification. An acceptable IB score for IGETC equates to either 3 semester or 4 quarter units for certification purposes. Students who have earned credit from an IB exam should not take a comparable college course because transfer credit will not be granted for both. International Baccalaureate (IB) IGETC Area IB Biology HL 5B (without lab) IB Chemistry HL 5A (without lab) IB Economics HL 4B IB Geography HL 4E IB History (any region) HL 3B or 4F* IB Language A1 (any language, except English) HL IB Language A2 (any language, except English ) HL IB Language A1 (any language) HL 3B IB Language A2 (any language) HL 3B IB Language B (any language) HL 6A IB Mathematics HL IB Physics HL 5A (without lab) IB Psychology HL 4I IB Theatre HL 3A *IB exam may be used in either area regardless of where the certifying CCC s discipline is located. Example: History at a CCC is approved for Area 3B. The History IB may be used in Areas 3B or Area 4. Use of College Level Examination Program (CLEP) on IGETC: CLEP cannot be used on IGETC IGETC Exceptions All UC and CSU campuses will accept the completed IGETC to satisfy all lower division general education requirements. However, individual colleges or majors within a CSU or UC campus may not accept IGETC for meeting general education. A list of those UC colleges and majors are found on the following website: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/ adminfo/transfer/advising/igetc.html For information on CSU campuses, students should consult with the individual CSU campus for details. Foreign Coursework on IGETC Foreign coursework (coursework from non-u.s. regionally accredited institutions) may not be used on the IGETC. Students with a substantial amount of coursework from institutions outside the United States should consult with a Pierce counselor to determine whether they should complete IGETC or the lower division breadth/general education requirements at the campus they plan to attend. Coursework from other United States regionally accredited colleges and universities Courses that are completed at a United States regionally accredited institution may be applied on the IGETC if the course(s) is determined to meet one of the Area requirements. You must make an appointment to meet with a Pierce Counselor to have courses completed at other United States regionally accredited institutions considered for use on IGETC. Visit the Pierce Counseling website to make an appointment online. Be sure to select Transcript Evaluation as the reason for the appointment. It is unlikely that institutions other than California Community Colleges will have a combined course in critical thinking-english composition that fulfills the IGETC Area 1B requirement. So, if you have completed a course at a college or university other than a California Community College, be sure to meet with a Pierce Counselor soon so you know where you stand and have time to complete additional coursework if necessary. IGETC Area 6: Language Other Than English You may demonstrate proficiency for the purpose of fulfilling the Language Other Than English IGETC requirement in one of the following ways: 1. Satisfactory completion of two years of high school coursework (U.S. high school or high school in country where the language of instruction is English) in a language other than English, with a grade of C- or better in each course. The two years must be in the same language. This is the only case in which a C- grade may clear an IGETC requirement. Students may clear D and F grades in less advanced high school coursework, by completing more advanced high school coursework with grades of C- or higher. 2. Satisfactory completion of a course (or courses) at a U.S. regionally accredited college or university with a grade of C or better in each course. The Pierce College courses that can be used to satisfy the Language Other Than English

IGETC Area 6 (continued) (LOTE) requirement are indicated on Page 7, Area 6 of this document. The course or courses must be equivalent to 2 years of high school work. 3. Satisfactory completion, with C grades or better, of two years of formal schooling at the sixth grade level or higher in an institution where the language of instruction is not English. Appropriate documentation must be presented to substantiate that the required coursework was completed. If an official sealed transcript cannot be obtained from a foreign institution an unofficial or opened transcript may be used to verify proficiency. Students who cannot provide documentation should either pass one of the examinations or tests listed below in 4 through 10, or satisfactorily complete an appropriate language course at their college, as outlined in 2. 4. Satisfactory score on the SAT II: Subject Test in languages other than English. Before May 1995 use 1st score; if taken after May 1995 use 2nd score: Chinese with listening: 500/520 Hebrew (Modern): 500/470 Korean/Korean with listening: /500 French/French with listening: 500/540 Italian: 500/520 Latin: 500/530 German/German with listening: 500/510 Japanese with listening: 500/510 Spanish/Spanish with listening: 500/520 5. Satisfactory score, 3 or higher, in the College Board Advanced Placement examinations in languages other than English. 6. Satisfactory score, 5 or higher, in the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examinations in language other than English. 7. Satisfactory completion of an achievement test administered by a community college, university, or other college in a language other than English. The test must assess the student s proficiency at the level equivalent to two years of high school language. This conclusion must be posted on a transcript indicating unit, course title and grade or on a document with letter head of the institution granting proficiency stating that the student has mastered proficiency in the language equivalent to two years of high school language. 8. If an achievement test is not available, a faculty member associated with a United States regionally accredited institution of higher education can verify a student s competency. The institution must provide a document on letter head asserting that the student has mastered proficiency in the language equivalent to two years of high school study. 9. Language other than English O level exam with grade of A, B, or C. 10. Language other than English International A Level exam with a score of 5, 6, or 7. 11. A Defense Language Institute language other than English course which is indicated as passed with a C or higher on the official transcript. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California s public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and upto-date information about student transfer in California. You can use ASSIST to find community college courses that are transferable to a UC or CSU campus and how those courses might be used to satisfy specific subject matter requirements for admissions, General Education, or lower division major preparation. You can use ASSIST to explore the majors available at University of California and California State University campuses.
