1 ZConverter 1.1 Overview ZConverter Windows Backup is image backup and recovery software for Windows Operating Systems like Windows 7/Vista/XP and Windows Server 2008/2003. It provides easy-to-use Windows live system backup and automatic scheduling backup. 1.1.4 The Comparison of ZConverter Windows Backup Function ZConverter Windows Backup ZConverter Windows Backup provides Full Backup / Update Backup / Incremental Backup / Differential Backup fucntions. Below explains update, incremental and differential backup. In order to use these backups, we should have a full backup file. Here, we will assume there is a full backup image file, Full_Backup.ZIA backed-up on Sunday. 1.1.4.1 Update Backup Feature Updates just changed data compared with Full_Backup onto one separate update backup file. Strength Recovers the system to the latest backup date with the minimum backup space. Weakness Provides only two recovery point. One is the latest update backup date and the other is the full backup date. 6

1.1.4.2 Incremental Backup Feature Backs-up just different data after comparing with the last backup file as an individual incremental backup file. Strength Can recover your system to the recovery point each incremental backup file was created. Backup space is smaller than the differential backup Weakness Needs all consecutive incremental files to recover the system to some recovery point and it may take a little bit longer time to recover the system than the differential backup. 1.1.4.3 Differential Backup Feature Backs-up just different data after comparing with the Full_backup as an individual differential backup file. Strength Can recover your system to the recovery point each differential backup file was created and recovery time may take a little bit faster than the incremental backup. Weakness Needs the largest backup space among the three backup functions. 7

1.1.5 System Requirements Below explains minimum requirements to run ZConverter Windows Backup CPU : Pentium III or later Memory : Minimum 512 MB is required to boot from recovery media (CD/DVD/USB) Disk : 300 MB to install program + space to save the disk images Boot from USB : Hardware must support this feature to boot from USB device. 8

2 How to Install ZConverter Windows Backup 1 This Chapter describes how to install ZConverter Windows Backup on your system. 2.1 Start Installation This section describes how to install your ZConverter Windows Backup product. To install ZConverter Windows Backup on your laptop, desktop or server, double-click the ZConverter Windows Backup installation icon or select Start>Run and enter ther location of the installer in the Run windows. The installer has a different name by each ZConverter Windows Backup edition and version. The name will be the following format. ZConverter_WindowsBackup_<Edition>_<Version>_<Language>_Setup.exe When you want to install the ZConverter Windows Backup Professional edition (V3.5.1 and English), the installer name will be ZConverter_WindowsBackup_Professional_v3.5.1_EN_Setup.exe Notice : Installation on Windows 7 & VISTA To install ZConverter Windows Backup, administrator s authority is required. But when you run the installer by user account, User Account Control windows may occur and ask Do you want to allow the following program ~. In this case, click Yes to continue the installation process. 1 This manual was written for Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit), ZConverter Windows Backup Professional Edition v3.5.1 Build: 9002. 9

2.2 ZConverter Windows Backup Installation The ZConverter Windows Backup installer prepares to install the components. Verify you are installing the right ZConverter product. Click Next. Accept the ZConverter license terms. Click I Agree and then click Next. 10

Click Next to accept the default installation folder and then click Install ZConverter Installation starts like below window. 11

Click Finish to close the wizard. On completion of ZConverter installation, you will find ZCon_WindowsBackup_Manager icon on your desktop. To run the ZCon_WindowsBackup_Manager, administrator s authority is required. When you run the ZCon_WindowsBackup_Manager by user authority, user account control window may occur. 12

At first, when you start ZConverter Manager, license key registration window appears. Enter the authorized license key and then click Activate. You can run this now. If you don t enter any licence key, you will be able to run this for 30 days for evaluation. When you want to use ZConverter Windows Backup Lite edition, you can get one-year free licence key from ZConverter web (http://www.zconverter.com). 13

3 How to use ZConverter Windows Backup ZConverter consists of ZCon_WindowsBackup_Manager and ZConverter service. You can manage all backup and recovery jobs from ZCon_WindowsBackup_Manager, while the actual tasks are run as background service on your desktop or server. 3.1 ZConverter Windows Backup Manager When you run ZConverter Windows Manager, you can find the below management User Interface window. This contains Toolbar / Image Tree / Details / History / Running Job. If you select Refresh check-box on the upper right side, Details and Histroy windows will be updated with the latest information by assigned interval. s 14

3.1.1 Toolbar Toolbar provides short cut buttons for frequently used functions. Backup : Backups windows system (OS/APP/DATA) Recovery : Creates a recovery image for CD/DVD/USB recovery Repository : Assigns image repositories, log folder and log file size About : Enter the license key, informs software version, company name, copyrights and so on. 3.1.2 Image Tree Image Tree shows assigned backup job information. Image tree name or assigned backup job is created with referencing the host name. Backup information is shown as branches of the image tree name. If you click each Image tree name, brief backup information is shown with belows as branches. Backup - Schedule : Once / Daily / Weekly / Monthly - Type : FULL BACKUP / UPDATE BACKUP - Path : Full path where backup file is located 15

3.1.3 Details Details window shows the assigned backup job information in detail. You can see the detailed information by clicking image tree name. <Details of Host name> <Details of assigned backup job or image tree name> If you click host name, it shows path of repository was created. If yoy click backup job, it shows details of information. And if double-click the log file, you can verify the log of that job. Refresh : It shows updating detail information by specified intervals. The default update interval is 10 seconds, if you turned off radio button, detail information won't be updated anymore. Log : If log icon is, it doesn t exist backup file, repository or log file. And you should verify repository or backup job again. 16

3.1.4 History History window shows backup job history about backup starting time, completion time and elapsed time and so on. You can verify your backup job from here whether it was successfully completed. 3.1.5 Running Job Running job shows the latest ran jobs. It displays progress status, schedule, size, and completion time and so on. 17

3.2 Repository From Repository menu, you can create image repositories to save the images. It can be created on local disks or networked storages. Also from here, you can check log folder location and log file size. 3.2.1 Backup Repository From Image Repository Configuration, you can create the repositories on local disks or networked storages. How to create a Local Repository Select Local Repository from Image Repository Configuration and then click Browse and then create a new repository folder or select an existing folder. When you create the repositories, make sure to click Add in order to assign them to Image Repository List, unless this, you will not be able to find them from Image Repository List. Notice : Default Image Repository When ZConverter Windows Backup is started at first, it automatically creates the default local repository which name is ZConverter. The default location is the drive which has the biggest free space among local drives. How to create Network repository 18

Network Path : Image repository path or shared folder created on networked storage (Ex: \\fileserver\share_folder) User Account : User ID to access the network repository or shared folder. Password : Password to access the network repository or shared folder. Drive Letter : Network drive for Network repository or shared folder Connect : Connect network drive for network repository Select Network Repository from Image Repository Configuration and then type Network Path,User Account,Password and select Drive Letter. When you create the repositories, make sure to click Add in order to assign them to Image Repository List, unless this, you will not be able to find them from Image Repository List. Notice : Network Repository Connectivity Status When you add a network repository in Image Repository List, its status in Windows Explorer becomes disconnected network drive, because network drive connection is done by ZConverter Service. 19

3.2.2 Log Configuration From Log Configuration, you can check the log path in which is saved and the maximum log file size. When you select Host Name from Image Tree, repository information will be showed in Details. 20

3.3 Backup In order to start backing-up, click Backup from Toolbar. Or click right mouse button on HOST from Image Tree and then select Backup -> Create a new backup. ZConverter Windows Backup provides three sorts of backup options. One-click Backup : ZConverter provides this option for beginners. You can backup your windows system only by one-click. It will backup your system by default. Advanced Backup : This option is provided for expert users. You can set up your own backup paths, backup type, compression rate and so on. Folder Backup : You can backup a specific file or folder you want to. Select One-click Backup or Advanced Backup or Folder Backup. 21

3.3.1 One-click Backup One-click backup minimizes user effort to backup his or her windows system. Basically, backup task will run as follows: 3.3.1.1 Summary Information Drive to backup : The Drive OS is installed on. By default, it is C: drive. Path to save - Repository : The path to save the system image. It automatically creates default local repository directory which folder name is ZConverter. This is created on the drive which has the largest available space. If you want to change this, please refer to 3.2 Repository section. - Backup File : Backup file name is created with referencing the backup drive and backup time. Of course, user can change this name. Name Creation Rule <Host Name>_<Backup Drive>_<Year>_<Date and Time>_<Sec.>.ZIA Task Type : Full Backup Compression Level : None/Normal/High Schedule : Once Click One-clik backup option and then click Start to backup your system. 22

3.3.2 Advanced Backup It provides you with several options which you can setup your own backup like compression rate, backup scheduling and the backup location and so on. 3.3.2.1 Select drives to backup When you select the drive to backup, you will see the existing assigned job from Backup job information window. Select the drive to backup and then click Next. Notice : Simultaneous Multi-drive Backup You can backup Multi-drive Backup simultaneously from ZConverter Windows Backup Enterprise Edition. If you want to backup drives simultaneously, select multiple drives to backup from Select Backup Drive window 23

After you select multiple drives to backup, you can setup Backup Type -> Backup Option one after another. 24

3.3.2.2 Select Backup Type Select the one among Full Backup, Update Backup, Incremental Backup and Differential Backup. In order to do Update Backup or Incremental Backup or Differential Backup, you should have the full backup image. Unless you have it, you cannot run any of them. Update Backup / Incremental Backup / Differential Backup option may be inactivated by your license. Full Backup When you backup the system image at first time, you should run Full Backup. Full Backup makes whole contents of the drive as a image file. If you check Full Backup and click Next button, you can set detail option. 25

Update Backup This updates just changed delta data after always comparing with Full_Backup image file onto one accumulated update backup file. If you check Update Backup and click Next button, you can set detail option. Incremental Backup This backs-up just changed delta data after comparing with the latest incremental backup file. There are multiple backup files created. You can recover your system to the recovery point you want to recover to by each incremental backup. Backup space is smaller than the differential backup. If you check Incremental Backup and click Next button, you can set detail option. 26

Differential Backup This backs-up just changed delta data after always comparing with full backup image file. There are multiple backup files created. You can recover your system to the recovery point each differential backup file was created and recovery time may be slightly faster than the incremental backup recovery time but the backup space is larger than the one of incremental backup. If you check Differential Backup and click Next button, you can set detail option. 27

3.3.2.3 Select Backup Option After setting backup type, you can set detail options. These are Image Repository, Bakcup name, Path to save and Backup Details for description. Image Repository : Assign one of the repositories to save your backup image. Backup Name : Assign Backup image name. By default, it will be created as '<Host Name>_<Backup Drive>_<Year>_<Date and Time>_<Sec.>.ZIA. Path to save : Shows full path and name of backup file Backup Details : The description of the backup file can be place. Click Next button After setting, it shows compression, excluded folder and schedule. From the Advanced Backup, you can setup your own backup compression level, backup schedule and the excluded folder to backup. 28

Compression level After selecting Backup type and Backup option, you can setup your own backup compression level. When select the higher compression level, your backup size will be smaller but backup time will take longer. Elapsed time and Compression rate by Compression level (Win 7, 6.6GB) Level File size Compression rate None 5.01 GB 75% Normal 2.62 GB 40% High 2.50 GB 38% Notice) This is tested under virtual server environment and the result may be varied by its environment. Excluded folder If you don t want to backup specific folders, you can exclude them from backup image. From Excluded Folder click Browse and then select the folders to exclude and then Add them on Excluded Folder list. Added directory can be deleted by the Remove button. Schedule For Scheduling backup, you can select a scheduling option among Once, Daily, Weekly, Monthly. Once : One time backup 29

Daily : Daily backup Weekly : Weekly backup Monthly : Monthly backup Image Validation If you check Image validation option, it verifies backup file s consistency. 30

Summary After completing setting-up your backup job, you can review it from the summary. If the schedule was once, backup will be start with click the Finish button. If the schedule wasn t once, it registered in schedule and backup on the appointed time. 31

File and Folder Backup You can backup a specific file or folder you want to. With backup wizard, you can select the folder or file you want to backup and then you can proceed to backup. By clicking Add Folder button, select the folder to backup. You can select whole drive or sub-folder under the specific folder and then you can back it up. Like Advanced backup, Image Repository shows registered repository. If you have registered more than one store, you can choose the registerd repository by drop-down menu. Backup Name shows repository that the backup files are saved and file names on one path. The file name can be edited. Backup files are created can be attach a description on Backup description. Check the information of the backup file and then click the button. 32

You can select the compression level among None, Normal and High. When you select high compression level, you can minimize the backed-up image size but it will relatively take more time to backup the data compared to the other levels. From the schedule menu, you can setup your backup schedule. When you select Once, your backup job starts instantly. Like Advanced backup, Summary shows you the details which you setup by backup wizard. When you click Start, File and Folder backup job starts. 3.3.3 Manage Backup Job By clicking right mouse button on Backup job name, you will find serveral management options like Run, Modify, Delete History, Remove from Inventory, delete from Disk. From here, you can manipulate the selected backup job. 33

Run : Run the backup job immediately. Modify : Modify the backup job options. Delete History : Delete the backup job history. Remove from Inventory : Delete backup job from Image Tree but remain the archived backup image files in Repository. Delete from Disk : Delete backup job from Image Tree and delete archived backup image files from Repository. Use an existing backup You can use this when you add the image file already saved in repository to Image Tree. In order to do this, click right mouse button on Host from Image Tree and then select Backup-> Use an existing backup. 34

3.4 Recovery If you want to create a recovery CD or DVD or USB which includes system backup images and bootable Windows PE, you can easily make them from ZConverter Recovery menu. 3.4.1 Recovery menu When you click Recovery on Toolbar or right-click on Host, you can create a recovery CD or DVD or USB for Windows 7/Vista/XP Operating Systems. 35

In order to create a recovery CD or DVD or USB media, from Recovery, select Create Recovery Media and then select USB or ISO image option. Select a backup : Select a backup image for creating recovery media Select a CD or USB : Select recovery media type. (Notice: You can create ISO Image Recovery CD up to 4GB. If the backup image you select from Select a backup exceeds 4GB, ISO image option will be inactive) - ISO Image: Convert the backup image into iso file type. - USB (Local disk): Create a bootable recovery USB memory or external Disk. 3.4.1.1 ISO Image When selecting ISO Image and then click Browse, you will see the below window. Select a folder to save ISO Image from Browse for Folder. And then click OK. BackupJobName.ISO image file creation process is started. 36

After the completion of this, BackupJobName.ISO image file will be created and then you can burn this onto CD or DVD Media. 3.4.1.2 USB (Local disk) You can also create your recovery media onto USB Disk or Local Disk. This is useful when you create bigger than 4GB image file. When selecting USB(Local disk) and then click Browse, you will see the below window. By default, you can see only USB external disks from this. When you check Show a local disk, you will also see the local disks with USB disks. 37

Select a USB or Local Disk and then click OK to process USB recovery media creation. Select Build and USB recovery media creation process is started. On completion of this process, you will have USB recovery Media. Notice : Check USB Booting function In order to make the USB as bootable media, you have to set the USB to active status. You can find how to make USB device active from Appendix A. USB Device Preparation. If you want to know whether your USB device supports USB booting function, please contact your USB manufacturer. 38

3.4.1.3 Start Recovery When you boot up your system with ZConverter Recovery Media you already created on USB or CD or DVD, you will see the below ZConverter Recovery Manager. It will manage all recovery processes. 39

3.4.2 ZConverter Recovery Manager ZConverter Recovery Manager provides Recovery, Disk Manager, and Network Manager tap. Recovery provides the major recovery function and then Disk Manager and Network Manager provide the options which are necessary during recovery process like disk partition and network connection to connect to network repository etc. 3.4.2.1 Disk Manager In case PC has multiple disks or partitions, you should select the partition or the disk you want to recover onto. From Disk Manager, you can manage and select partitions or disks. 40

If there is no partition on disks or if you should modify the partition, you can create a new partion or modify the partition from Disk Manager. Notice : Disk Initialization Please be careful before clicking Apply. All the disks are included in Disk Intialization box will be initialized or all the data will be deleted. Create : Creates a new partition. Modify : Reconfigures a partition. Delete : Deletes a partition. Select All : Adds all disks to initialization list. Exclude : excludes selected disk(s) from initialization list. When you create a new partition or modify existing partition size, you can assign the partition size you want to or select assign all available size for assigning all available space. And then assign a drive letter to this partition. After completion of this, make sure to click Apply. 41

3.4.2.2 Network Manager When you save your system backup file on networked storage, you should recover this through network. From Network Manager, you can connect your pc to network repository and call the backed-up image files for the recovery. Click Network Manager > Management and ZConverter network manager will be shown like below. IP Address Setting : Assigns an IP Address to recovery PC. You can assign this by automatic option or manual option Network Drive Mapping : Maps the Network Drive(Repository) which saves the backed-up images. 42

There are 2 methods to map network drives. One is Basic Connection(WORKGROUP), and the other is Basic Connection(DOMAIN). You can select it which matches your environment. 43

3.4.3 Recovery Process Recovery Process is run by clicking Recovery from recovery tap. In order to find backed-up files, you can select Auto Search or Manual Search. You can recover your system to the specific backup time by selecting Recovery Time Point you want to recover to. 44

When you select Auto Search, it will search the default repository, ZConverter in every drive and show you all backed-up files. If you saved a backed-up file in other folder, select Manual Search and then type the Path or browse the path which has a backed-up file. 45

Select one among Recovery Time Point you want to recover and then click Next. Make sure you selct the right Recovery Time Point and then click Recover. You can change Recovery Partition if you want to restore your backup file to different partition. 46

When you start recovery process, it will format the partition you selected. Make sure what is going on. When you select Yes, Recovery Status window will be shown. 47

System will be rebooted after finishing recovery process and closing ZConverter Recovery Manager. 48

3.4.4 How to use ZConverter Recovery Explorer In order to recover the full backup image file, it relatively takes longer time than the recovery of a file or folder. When you need to recover just a file or a folder, you don t have to recover all image files but you can recover a specific file or a folder by ZConverter Recovery Explorer. It will make you much easier to recover a file or a folder. Highlight Backup System and then run ZConverter Recovery Explorer from the right pane. You can see the below ZConverter Recovery Explorer. Select the file or folder from the explorer. 49

Click Recover and file or folder recovery process starts From the windows explorer, you can check whether your recovery process is completed well or not. 50

Appendix A. How to make USB Device Bootable In order to make USB device bootable on your computer, you have to format this using Diskpart command under the Windows7 or VISTA or Windows Server 2008 environment and then set the partition to Activate. You cannot set this to Activate undert the Windows XP environement. In the process to make USB memory bootable, USB device is initialized. Before doing this, we recommend to backup all the data in USB device. How to make USB Device Bootable 1. Connect USB device to Windows 7 or VISTA or Windows Server 2008 computer. 2. Open a commnad window with an administrator right (Start -> Run -> cmd.exe) 3. Type diskpart in command window 4. Type list disk in order to identify the disk number of the activated USB device. 5. From here, we assume the disk number is 2. diskpart list disk select disk 2 clean create partition primary size=<device size> select partition 1 active format fs=ntfs quick assign exit 51
