APHA PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SECTION ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association invites BSN students who plan to engage in PHN practice, Graduate nursing students with a public health concentration, Early Career professional nurses (within 3 years of finishing your degree), and a mid-career professional to submit an application to become a recipient of a PHN Scholarship to provide $500.00 to assist in attendance at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. This program provides a scholarship to students/nurses for the purpose of establishing meaningful connections in the public health nursing community, developing future PHN leaders, maximizing awardees experiences at the APHA annual meeting, and supporting involvement in the PHN Section. Once selected, applicants will be matched with and mentored by an experienced PHN. The mentorship experience is expected to enhance the students or new professionals role as a public health nurse. Public Health Nursing Student Engagement Committee Public Health Nursing Section Membership Committee American Public Health Association Awardee Eligibility and Responsibilities Awardee Eligibility 1. Is a BSN student who plans to engage in PHN practice, graduate nursing student with a public health concentration, an early career professional PHN, or a midcareer PHN currently employed in an agency with a public health focus. 2. Demonstrates an interest in the advancement of public health nursing through the applicant essay. Awardee Responsibilities 1. Exchange contact information and develop a tentative time schedule of annual meeting activities with assigned mentor prior to the annual meeting. 2. Attend the Quad Council program, APHA Opening Session, PHN luncheon, and at least one PHN section business meeting and scientific session. 3. Provide an evaluation of the experience to the committee by completing the leadership program evaluation form. 4. Prepare a written summary of the events attended and assessment of the mentorship experience within 30 days of conference attendance- for the PHN section newsletter and/or other PHN section promotional or informational publications. Awardees summary statements will describe future intentions related to practice and involvement in PHN/CHN. Award recipients will be photographed with the other award winners for publication in the PHN newsletter. 5. Must also complete and submit a W-9 form. 6. Remain in touch with mentor throughout the calendar year. Awardee Selection Process The committee will collaborate with public health/community health nursing organizations, agencies, and others to distribute announcements about the program. Each interested applicant must complete an application form and return it to the committee. The committee will select the awardees. Applicants will be asked to describe themselves and their backgrounds. Successful applicants will be asked to give permission to the PHN Section to publicize their names and professional biographical information within the PHN Section.
