In response, MCW is expanding its medical education program into new regions of the state. Working with partners in Green Bay and Central Wisconsin, MCW is developing innovative, community-based medical education programs in Northeast and Central Wisconsin to increase the physician workforce in these regions and communities throughout Wisconsin. Target dates for first class of 20 students: 2015 in Green Bay and 2016 in Central Wisconsin; increasing matriculation to 25 students at each campus in subsequent years Collaboration in each region with academic and health care institutions, government, business and civic leaders and physicians is a centerpiece. Start-up expenses are reduced greatly by sharing existing facilities and resources of the regional partners in lieu of new construction. Employs an immersive education model in which students receive their education and training directly in these Wisconsin regions Programs are structured to reduce student debt and to allow quicker entry into the workforce. Accreditation The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC) granted reaccreditation in 2007 for 10 years, the longest term possible. The HLC is the accrediting body for all institutions of higher education in MCW s geographic region. (HLC - ncahlc.org) The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) awarded full, eight-year accreditation in 2011, the maximum period of accreditation. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BUILDING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invests significantly in expanding its community engagement mission to improve the health of communities of Wisconsin and beyond. More than 350 diverse community groups partner with more than 150 MCW faculty in more than 20 departments and centers to advance public and community health in the metro Milwaukee area and throughout Wisconsin. Building partnerships between MCW and communities is a strategic priority as MCW strives to have the greatest impact on Wisconsin s critical health needs. The Office of the Senior Associate Dean for Community Engagement provides mentoring, consulting and infrastructural support in community engagement to further develop MCW s capacity to partner with communities and promote the MCW community engagement mission. Medical and graduate students are involved in many service opportunities that benefit the community, including: service learning courses, community projects, student organization projects, and the Saturday Free Clinic for the Uninsured at Columbia St. Mary s. The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin is working with community leaders and citizens to advance community engagement in research. Student research teams, community lecture series and courses in community engagement for faculty, staff and students are among many activities and programs to advance translation of research to improved patient care. ADVANCING A HEALTHIER WISCONSIN ENDOWMENT A CATALYST FOR IMPROVED HEALTH The Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) endowment launched its first funded initiatives in community health, research and education in 2004. The endowment was established through funds resulting from the Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin s conversion to a for-profit corporation. The endowment s initial value of $318 million has increased to $419 million in its first 10 years, through MCW s stewardship. AHW has awarded $164.8 million to 311 initiatives dedicated to improving the health of the people of Wisconsin, as of December 2013. Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (This portion of the endowment funds community health improvement and community-academic partnerships): More than 150 community-based health initiatives have received funding to advance strategic interventions, health promotion and systems changes since 2004. HISTORY The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a private, freestanding institution. MCW began as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, founded on May 20, 1893. On January 14, 1913, the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine. On September 30, 1967, Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. Since then, the school has continued as a private, freestanding institution. The name was changed on October 14, 1970, to the Medical College of Wisconsin. MCW has more than 16,000 living alumni. 1.
