What should I asked a Program Officer? Dear Dr. Eichelberg, I was hoping to inquire about potentially applying for a K award under the NIAID. (actual - May 2013) Send a draft of your biosketch and specific aims (1 page). Is the proposed research area a good fit for your IC? Would the K08 be the most suitable grant mechanism for me? Specific questions that may be unique to your situation. Any other advice?
General Principles of Career Development and LRP Awards
Career Development Awards (Ks) Individual awards Several for MDs (K01, K08, K23, K24) to support development to become an independent investigators More senior award than a clinical fellowship Some mentored, others are not PhDs (MDs): Mostly K22 and K99/R00: transition awards; also K01 and K25 Salary for mentored awards: $75-90K + $25-50K research support; F&A 8% NIAID POC: Katrin Eichelberg ([email protected])
Review Criteria for NIH Career Development Awards Overall Impact. Reviewers should provide their assessment of the likelihood for the candidate to maintain a strong research program, taking into consideration the criteria below in determining the overall impact/priority score. NEW: revised scoring guidance for Ks Candidate Career Development Plan/Career Goals & Objectives Research Plan Mentor(s), Co-mentor(s), Consultant(s), Collaborator(s) Environment and Institutional Commitment to the Candidate NIAID CDA applications are reviewed at the NIAID Scientific Review Program by 4 chartered committees (AIDS, AITC, MID and MID-B)
Physician Scientist: Should I apply for a K08 or K23? Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) Candidate may propose basic research project Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) Candidate may only propose Patient-Oriented Research (POR). POR is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects. K08/23: 3 to 5 yr award Salary: $90,000/yr Research Support: $50,000/yr Review of applications is essentially the same.
K08/K23s: Important NIAID Policies NIAID Eligibility Requirements for (K08/K23) Grant Applications Candidates must have a health professional doctoral degree, such as the M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or equivalent degree, and a professional license to practice in the United States. Career development award applications and NIAID Policy on Support of Clinical Trials NIAID will not accept K-series applications proposing to conduct new, free-standing clinical trials or studies. Any proposed clinical trial or study in a K application must be part of an ongoing clinical trial or program, generally the mentor s. Career development applicants are encouraged to participate in the planning, design, and implementation of these ongoing clinical trials and studies in order to gain the training and experience necessary to become independent clinical investigators.
Buried in student loans? LRP to the rescue!
Loan Repayment programs (LRP) NIH wants to encourage outstanding health professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. If you commit at least two years to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity, NIH may repay up to $35,000 of your qualified student loan debt per year. Loan repayment benefits are in addition to the institutional salary you receive for your research. 30 LRP Clinical and Pediatric Program Goal: The NIH Loan Repayment Programs supports M.D.s and other doctoral-level professionals pursue research careers by repaying qualifying educational debt. Clinical Research Patient-oriented research conducted with human subjects, or research on the causes and consequences of disease in human populations involving material of human origin (such as tissue specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator or colleague directly interacts with human subjects in an outpatient or inpatient setting to clarify a problem in human physiology, pathophysiology or disease, epidemiologic or behavioral studies, outcomes or health services research, or developing new technologies, therapeutic interventions, or clinical trials. Pediatric Research Research that is directly related to diseases, disorders, and other conditions in children, including pediatric pharmacology.
