The program is primarily a day oriented program with one or two evening per week commitment the first semester for Medical Terminology and English Composition (if not previously completed). There is a two evening commitment per week during the second semester for Microbiology (if not previously completed). The program consists of general education courses, courses specific to surgical technology and clinical experience in cooperation with a local hospital. The program is an eleven-month program which begins in the fall semester and is continuous through the spring and summer semesters. A Certificate is awarded upon graduation from the program. A successful student is qualified to take the national exam to become a certified surgical technologist (CST). Page 128 SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE (512) AWARD: Certificate PURPOSE: The Certificate program in Surgical Technology is designed to prepare students to become integral members of the surgical team. As members of the surgical team, they will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel delivering quality patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam offered by The Liaison Council for the Surgical Technologist. OCCUPATIONAL GOALS: Surgical Technologist in a Hospital Surgical Technologist in a Private or Ambulatory Surgery Center. PROGRAM: The Surgical Technology program is a 10-month program, including the summer session. Through classroom instruction and clinical field work, students cover surgical ASEPSIS and the preparation and use of the operating room and its equipment. Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students enrolled in the College, surgical technology students must achieve a grade of C or better in each required BIO and SGT course in order to continue in and graduate from this program. Students should consult with the Allied Health Department Chair in planning an appropriate program. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students must place up through MAT 031 on the College s Academic Skills Assessment (ASA) or complete all developmental requirements prior to admission into the program. 2. Students must have completed biology in high school within the last two years or complete BIO 101, Fundamentals of Biology, prior to admission into the program. ADMISSION PROCEDURES: 1. Request program information from the Allied Health Department Chair. 2. Completion of the College s Academic Skills Assessment (ASA) administered through the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services. 3. Obtain a copy of your high school transcript. 4. Contact the Allied Health Department Chair for an appointment to review the high school transcript and assessment recommendations. 5. Apply for admission to Chesapeake College. 6. Complete any remedial coursework required prior to application for admission into the Surgical Technology Program (BIO 101, Fundamentals of Biology, must be taken if biology was not taken in high school). 7. By March 31 of the year you wish to enter the Program, send to the Allied Health Department Chair a letter requesting admission into the Program, and two letters of personal recommendation (employer, teacher, friend, doctor, or minister). 8. Contact the Allied Health Department Chair by April to schedule a May interview with the Surgical Technology Admissions Committee. 9. Letters of acceptance will be issued by June 1. 10. Program begins in the fall semester.

NOTE: Laboratory science courses taken 10 or more years prior to application for admission will not be considered. Individuals working in a medical or related field may appeal to the Surgical Technology Program director. Revised 10/2010 SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Chesapeake College Surgical Technology Program is an eleven-month program which begins in the fall semester and is continuous through the spring and summer semesters. Through classroom instruction and clinical fieldwork, students cover surgical ASEPSIS and the preparation and use of the operating room and its equipment. The surgical technologist provides patient care before, during, and after surgery, prepares the room and equipment for each surgical procedure, assists the physicians and nurses during surgery, and maintains the equipment used for specific surgical procedures. Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students in the College, surgical technology students must achieve a grade of "C" or better in each required BIO and SGT course in order to continue in and graduate from this program. The Surgical Technology Program includes the Fall and Spring semesters, and a Summer session; a total of 31 credits. It requires 38 to 42 contact hours per week per semester. Although some evening classes may be required, this is a five-day (day-time) program. After acceptance into the program, submission of a health record completed by a physician including documentation of Hepatitis B immunization in addition to other current immunizations and health insurance will be required. After acceptance, students must also obtain or keep current, Health Care Provider CPR certification. Prospective students are advised that fieldwork, clinical placements, and Certification/licensure may involve drug testing and /or background checks performed at the student s expense. 12. Program begins in the fall semester. Class size is limited. The Surgical Technology Admissions Committee will interview all applicants who meet these criteria.
